i. Recruitment and Selection Process of Peruvian Delegation for SWY27

SWYAA Peru was appointed by the Japane-se Embassy in Lima as the supporting orga-nization in charge of the recruiting and selec-tion process for the SWY27 participating youth. Between June and August 2014, we conducted a comprehensive process, which included 4 different stages: Communica-tions, Recruiting, Evaluation and Selection. Communication stage aimed at spreading the voice about the upcoming SWY27 program. An online and offline communica-tion campaign was established for this purpose, with a general reach of more than 5000 people. We also conducted 3 informa-tion sessions at two universities and one public hall, with a combined attendance of 400 people. The recruit process started with the imple-mentation of an online registration form, which received 293 entries. A ten-pages, paper-based, formal application form was also created, to have a common base for

preliminary evaluation. During this stage SWYAA Peru received 184 applications. For the evaluation process, 5 teams of volun-teer exPYs were set to review all application forms and conduct personal or skype-based interviews to the applicants. After this process, 24 youth were picked for the selec-tion stage. This last process included a full day ‘leadership camp’ to evaluate communi-cation, social and team-working skills. 15 applicants were finally selected for the final interview at the Japanese Embassy. They were screened by a panel composed by a representative of Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Cultural Attaché of the Japanese Embassy and a representative of SWYAA Peru. The 9 participating youth were finally selec-ted after this process, ready to become the next Peruvian Delegation. As for the National Leader, SWYAA Peru implemented an internal process to recom-mend 3 exPYs for the Japanese Embassy to appoint the Peruvian National Leader. The

With the aim to attract applicants for the Ship for World Youth 2015 Program, SWYAA Peru offered in June and July, three information sessions that were held in the “Universidad del Pacífico”, “Universidad de Lima” and “Centro Cultural Peruano Japonés”. The three events were a huge success; hundreds of potential applicants participated and recei-ved information about what SWY 2015 is and how to become part of the new Peruvian delegation. During the events, participants

learned about the program, about its history, main goals and the work done by SWYAA Peru from SWYAA Peru members. They were given detailed instructions regarding the application process and the opportunity to ask questions regarding the SWY 2015 call for new participants. At the end of each event SWYAA members from different batches were invited to share their experien-ces as well as the impact it had on their lives.

i. Words from the National Leader of SWY27 - “10 New SWYers”

We have been getting to know each other and working together in our preparation for the cultural exchange since couple of months ago. Learning few words and expressions in Japanese with our two Nikkei

delegates Kenneth Fukusaki and Kei Kanas-hiro, growing our interest in other countries issues with Lorena Gamarra and listening Rodrigo Coquis talk about entrepreneurship. Amongst other things, this past months we have been looking for sponsors to cover the expenses of our formal official uniform, to buy gifts for our hosts & program organisers,

process was conducted by a committee formed by 3 ex National Leaders, whom eva-luated all candidates and made the recom-mendation to the Japanese Embassy. Ms. Miryam Justo (SWY16) was finally appointed by the Japanese Embassy as the SWY27 Peruvian National Leader. As part of her duties as NL, Miryam was responsible for the delegation’s preparation process before he ship.

ii. Organization of the SWY27 ‘Japanese Mission Abroad’ destination

The Republic of Peru was designated as one of the five international destinations for the ‘Japanese Misson Abroad’ to travel as part of SWY27 Program. SWYAA Peru was appoin-ted by the Cabinet Office and the Japanese Embassy as the official hosting organization in Peru. Our duty is to organize all the activi-ties related to this project to be implemented in February 2015. In mid-May 2014, SWYAA Peru launched a call for potential program coordinators among the exPYs. Ms. Susy Sano (SWY21) was selected as the General Coordinator for the “POC PERU” Project, and she traveled to Japan as our AA representative to the Tokyo Conference. Through Susy, SWYAA Peru arranged a

comprehensive proposal of one-week activi-ties for the Japanese Mission, covering Infor-mation and Media Course Contents, Peru-vian Culture and Reality and Nikkei Heritage and Japanese Influence. These tentative activities were introduced in a full schedule plan to the Preliminary Inspection Mission that visited Peru in September. Mr. Tetsuo Oshikiri from the Cabinet Office, and Ms. Tamae Saito from IYEO visited Peru to have several meeting with different hosting organi-zations. SWYAA Peru arranged their sche-dule of activities as well, in close cooperation with the Japanese Embassy. As a formal welcome to the Preliminary Inspection Mission, SWYAA Peru organized a reception for Mr Oshikiri and Ms Saito, with the attendance of many Peruvian exPYs. They also had a chance to meet the mem-bers of the future SWY27 Peruvian Delega-tion, as they had just started their prepara-tion process.

preparing two PY semminars and planning and rehearsing for our National Presenta-tion; in which Diego Chavez will have the role of Ekeko man. We will showcase the reality of Peru, from our educational system to the interesting Caballitos de Totora and much more. Also, Melissa Guadalupe and Carlos Arbaiza have been dancing Marinera and the rest of us La Tangarana and Carnaval Arequipeno with support of our teacher Cza-rina M. During our preparation we have took part in the Japanese Festival Matsuri and we have tried different Japanese foods and drinks: mochi, matcha, sake, ramen, soba, etc. Josselin S. worked on the three minute wake up call with pututo’s and Quechua sounds; and Alessandra I. has been negotia-ting with vendors for the best price and fabric quality. For all of us this has been a good experience of constant learning and sharing,

we had a great time working on the Social Contribution Activity in Hogar Thomas Helm and during our sunday’s evenings meetings playing zamponas and listening our different stories. In all these hectic times we have been lucky enough to have been portrait in local media such us Peru Shimpo Newspaper (Thanks Erica O.), El Comercio (thanks Alejandra C.) and Andina (Thanks Susy S.) and to have the support of Pepe S., Hiroshi H. and Oscar M. as exNLs and of course the SWYAAPeru board lead by Jaime S. and other members that have shared their experiences, con-tacts, time, ideas and motivation with us. ii. SWY27 Peruvian Delegates Welco-me Dinner

On September 14th, the SWYAA organized a welcome dinner to the new delegation. The evening started with an icebreaking activity, followed by the welcome speech, made by the Alumni Association’s President. After the speech, each of the dinner partici-pants introduced him or herself to everyone. In this part, the alumni told what they expect from the new delegation, and the new dele-gation told what they were expecting of this new experience.

Following this, everyone approached the table to feast with some Peruvian fusion cuisine. This gave everyone time to talk about their own experiences in the SWY and INDEX programs and exchange with the new delegation. The SWYAA is very satisfied about the SWY 27 delegates, and hope they keep the name of Peru very high, while enjo-ying their journey to the fullest.

i. Christmas Activity

Date of the Event: December 13thHosting City: Lima - CallaoNumber of ex-PYs involved: 19Number of Beneficiaries: 82 childrenSummary:

As we did on 2013, we organized for Christ-mas a social contribution activity to share our interest and concern for local kids with few resources. Because of our commitment with our society, on December 13th 2014 we prepared a special activity in the “Hermano Thomas Helm” Center, a Christian NGO that has a house in “El Callao” that works as a day shelter for kids. We had the participation

of 82 kids between 6 and 12 years. We chose this place because last year we did a similar activity there, so we continued the job we had already begun there previously. “El Callao” is a constitutional provinces and has been the main peruvian port for centu-ries. It was built on and around a peninsula, the district of “La Punta”. A historical fortress, the “Fortaleza del Real Felipe”, stands on the promontory overlooking the harbor. There is also located our main international airport. Even though it is a famous and historical province, it has high rates of poverty and there is a lack of safe places in the public place, especially for the youth. The “Herma-no Thomas Helm” Center is a safe place for

the children to play, learn and enjoy their age. We wanted to contribute to the hard work they have been doing for 19 years.

We prepared several recreative activities for the children that enjoyed fully the experien-ce. They played, sang, ate, run, draw, and shared with us lot of smiles and a great time.

Our last activity was preparing welcome pos-ters and messages for the Japanese youth of the SWY 27 that will come to Peru on February and will participate in a social acti-vity in this place. It is important to mention that we had the participation of ex PY’s of Turkey, Greece and Japan.

How many ex-PYs involved and how many beneficiaries?

Five Peruvian alumni formed the Committee to make this project a reality: Natalia Ames (SWY 21), Paola Lema (SWY 21), Oscar Malaspina (SWY 16/ SWY 21), Diego Padilla (SWY 21) and Susy Sano (SWY 21). The committee worked in the preparation and execution of the Bus for World Youth program from March 2009 to January 2010. The invitation was opened to all SWY Alumni, resulting in the registration of 25 participants from Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Poland and Peru; 21 ex-PYs from batches 15, 16, 17 and 21, and also four non ex-PYs (family of participants from NZ and Canada).

Please write a summary of the event

The Bus for World Youth Program (BWY) was a voluntary Post Program Activity proposed by the Peruvian delegation on board SWY 21 (2009) with the objective of traveling through Peru with the same spirit of the Ship, but on a Bus. The purpose of the Bus for World Youth Program was to reassure participant’s commitment with society and leadership, through volunteer work and donations for Peruvian communities in need. Throughout 14 days, from December 28th 2009 to January 10th 2010, the participants traveled by bus from Lima to Ica (Pisco, El Carmen and Huacachina), Arequipa (city, and a poor community near Colca Canyon called Chalhuanca), Puno (city, and the islands of Uros, Amantaní, Taquile and Sillustani), and finally, Cusco (city, Korikancha, Sacsayhuaman, Quenqo, Puca Pucara, Tambomachay, Maras, Moray, Ollantaytambo, and Inca Trail… with Machu Picchu at the end!). In each place we tried to create an environment of partnership, solidarity and cultural exchange. During our journey we were able to assist four Peruvian communities with music instruments and the tuition for workshops in order to reinforce their identity through music, clothing for the cold weather and educational materials for the local libraries. We also had the opportunity to share valuable time with the people of these communities. More information available in the blog:

Final Note

16

2014 was indeed an amazing year! The greatest news that we could have received was that Peru was invited once again to be part of SWY. For us is the materialization of the hard work of being a solid and active alumni association that has been always the goal since the beginning. Thru our social contribution activities and our support to the Embassy of Japan we believe we

have set a great reputation for our SWYAA.

During this year we focused most of our efforts on helping out the Japanese Embassy to spread of the SWY program and select members for SWY27. But the most important task has been the preparation process of our latest peruvian delegation. With the active assistance of their Natio-

nal Leader and exPYs we have help out form a very promising team. We are very sure that Peru will once again set a high bar during the program and deliver as expected by the Cabinet

Office of Japan.

This upcoming year will also be full of excitement. We will be adding 9 amazing new members to our association and will host the 23 Japanese Youth participants from SWY27 that will visit

our country as part of the SWY program.

We wish to extend a special thanks to the Cabinet Office for selection Peru again to participate in the SWY program and also for the first time to become host of the Japanese Youth partici-

pants.

We also want extend our gratitude to the IYEO, the SWYAA International and the other AA’s for their support on our work.
