“I can’t count on the weather – just my drill.”Seeding conditions are rarely perfect. But with the Morris Contour Drill you can count on unsurpassed seed placement for quick and even germination. It all starts with the independent contour opener that features parallel linkage for ultra-precise seed and fertilizer placement. Each opener follows the contour of the ground, even on hills, while the adjustable packing pressure gives you the ability to pull through damp spots. The Contour Drill gets your crops off to the best start possible, requires less horsepower to pull and delivers overall fuel savings. Plus, its simple, rugged design provides ease of operation and many years of durability. To learn more about our grower-inspired technologies, visit us online or see your Morris dealer.

W estern Canadian agronomy research over the past decade has shown that yield is directly tied to achieving

targeted plant populations. The first and best way to ensure that goal is reached, after securing high quality seed, is through the planting process.

Whether using the best of precision disc planters or the most rugged of C-shank cultivators with an air delivery sys-tem onboard, the outcome of plant populations remains the path to higher per acre margins.

The trend toward precision planting and prescription agron-omy remains one of the biggest issues in seeding for prairie producers. As seed and fertilizer become more valuable, plac-ing the right amount in the right space becomes an economic consideration related to financial margins. This appears to be due in part to the sticker shock related to fertilizer prices of 2008 and in part to improved yields realized from the latest in genetics.

Blending fertilizer on the go and variable rate application are popular additions to many of the new machines leaving dealers’ lots.

Single pass solutions are now the choice for most produc-ers due to reduced machinery and labour costs and the need to cover large acreages within a four week seeding

window. Dealers say that today producers are showing a new willingness to spend more on the latest precision seeding technology that will deliver an opportunity for input savings, higher yields and improved margins over the long term.

At the same time many of the new, traditional air seeders have been redesigned with improvements that have rendered them as precise as some of the drills on the market a decade ago.

There are more well-engineered choices on the market today than ever and because of that farmers are the winners in today’s seeding game.

Through Techs&Specs we attempt to provide a comprehen-sive list of the machines appropriate to the Western Canadian marketplace. However we will inevitably leave out a few. This list of specifications is compiled to provide a reference for agricultural producers and we encourage its users to contact their local dealers and the manufacturers to ensure they have the latest information on specifications and models available.

4 A new air seeder option may provide prairie farmers with the best of both worlds.

The UltraPro Canola Meter, available on Seed Master drills, can handle conventional crops and is also capable of uniform plant spacing within each seed row. This is important if corn and soybeans are to deliver top yields and profit.

The meter is based on a concept called seed singulation, which has been a standard function on corn planters for decades.

However, it is an investment most prairie farmers are reluctant to make in a crop that still constitutes a small percentage of their acres.

That investment has been one of the obstacles standing in the way of corn and soybean expansion.

Seed Master president Norbert Beaujot said he has been working on a dual-function drill for some time, and it’s now available as

an option on his company’s drills. The UltraPro Canola Meter is a few quick

changes away from delivering corn seed in a relatively uniform spacing down the row.

Beaujot stops short of calling it true seed singulation, but said it’s the next best thing.

“It’s not seed singulation in the strictest sense of the word because true singulation is done at the opener where the seed drops to the ground. And it’s perfect,” he said.

“But this is a giant step in that direction for air seeders. I think it’s as close to true seed singulation as you can get in an air delivery system.

“It’s close enough to true singulation that a producer can buy just one drill for all crops, including corn. It’s close enough that you don’t need a dedicated corn planter.”

Beaujot said seed singulation and uniform plant placement within the row are likely not possible in densely seeded cereal crops such as wheat, nor is it important when the seeds are only half an inch apart.

However, it becomes more important for canola and sunflowers, in which ideal plant spacing ranges from two to 14 inches.

Growers of those crops do not want to see two or three plants emerge from the same point and then spend the growing season battling each other.

Uniform plant spacing becomes a greater challenge as more producers move toward wide row spacing.

Beaujot said wide row spacing is essential if producers want to grow big heavy crops, but there are challenges.

Wider row spacing in wheat normally pushes more seeds into fewer rows. However, Beaujot cautions against overseeding, especially with high-cost hybrids.

He urges growers to put down fewer seeds per acre, giving each plant more space for better growth. However, this makes it more important to have better metering and spacing.

Seed singularity good for corn; possible in canola too

“It doesn’t make sense that we can achieve seed depth accuracy of one eighth of an inch but still have random seed distribution in the seed row,” Beaujot said.

“We think that seed metering is the next major frontier in air seeders. You don’t want an expensive seed and a high-value plant competing with its neighbours for sunlight, moisture and nutrients. We’re starting to see now that uniform seed spacing down the row is probably just as important for canola and soybeans and sunflower as it is for corn.”

The UltraPro system selects individual seeds at the meter rather than at the opener, which Beaujot said is different from bulk metering.

“We have a very narrow section of the meter roller that picks up only one or two seeds at a time,” he said.

“In the cases where it picks two seeds, by the time the seeds get down to the end of a 50 foot hose, they are uniformly separated.”

The orifice feeding the roller chokes down tight enough that no more than two seeds can enter the roller at one time. In the canola mode, the roller picks up the seed at the bottom of the roller.

Switching to the corn mode means changing the roller and the direction of rotation. The seed is now picked up at the top of the roller.

The prototype machine Beaujot used on his own farm this spring was set up for 14 inch row spacing, and the target plant population in his 30 acre cornfield penciled out to one plant every 14 inches, or a perfect 14-inch square if everything works perfectly.

And it almost did.He said his overall plant population and

seed count worked out to a perfect average of one plant every 14 inches, based on 35,000 plants per acre.

But was it true singulation?“We gained a lot from the standard

random seed distribution we used in the

past, but no, it’s not perfect singulation,” Beaujot said.

“There are a few places where we see variances of 10 to 18 inches between plants. Plus it’s very rare to see two corn plants close together anywhere in the field. That in itself is a major accomplishment.”

He said the new system also accomplished one pass seeding with all fertilizer going down with the seed.

“We side banded 135 lb. of actual N (nitrogen) while seeding the corn. That’s 400 lb. per acre of actual product. That went down an inch and a half to the side of the seed and three quarters of an inch below.”

The UltraPro Canola Meter lists for $50 per seed run.

For more information, contact Beaujot at 306-721-3001 or visit www.seedmaster.ca .

AmITy TEcHnOlOGyAmity Technology provides three drill

options, a single disc, double disc and C-shank. The paired row, single disc model offers built in mid-row fertilizer banding and hydraulic, on the go seed-ing depth and down pressure settings. The double disc is a narrow spacing drill capable of precision seeding at higher speeds. The shank is a single pass drill reminiscent of the Concord no-till drills. For more information visit www.amity-tech.com.

cASE IHThe Case IH Precision Hoe 800 offers care-

ful placement of seed and fertilizer and good residue flow in uneven conditions due to the unit’s parallel link row unit. It has working widths from 50 to 70 feet and maintains a narrow transport width. Flex hoe air drills are also available in sizes up to 70 feet. The shank style drills are designed to provide a tradi-tional seeding solution at a lower cost than a precision drill. The company also produces a no-till disk drill for high trash situations such as where corn stover or heavy wheat straw causes plugging. The drills are available in 30 and 40 foot widths.

GREAT PlAInSGreat Plains Manufacturing of Salina,

Kansas, has been building seeding equip-ment since 1976. The company’s semi mounted and fully mounted air drills run up to 40 feet in width. Great Plains has three new drills, a 30 foot unit that car-ries a pair of 100 bushel dry tanks, one for seed and one for fertilizer or both for seed. The 3007HD folds to just 10 feet wide in transport. The 4010HDA is a 40 foot unit with up 350 bushels of seed and fertilizer. The new 2007HD can han-dle two 82 bushel tanks or a 150, or an 82 and two 200 US gallon liquid tanks.

Star pattern meters keep seed fed to the runs in individual lines, which the company claims ensures accurate meter-ing. For more information visit www.greatplainsmfg.com.

HORScH AndERSOnHorsch Anderson, a 10 year old company

located in South Dakota, focuses on small grains seeding and tillage equipment that has its roots in the movement to single pass, reduced tillage seeding in the 1980s.

The drill is designed to avoid trash issues, common in high yielding winter wheat crops of the American Midwest and Great Plains.

With 15 inch shank spacings spread over four ranks, the machines avoid raking heavy stubble and provide clearance for difficult to manage stubble such as corn.

Optional cutting coulters pave the way for the shanks in tough conditions. For more information visit www.horschander-son.com.

JOHn dEEREWith three hoe drill models, John Deere offers

a lower cost basic hoe drill in the 1830. It is avail-able in three and five section models with the company’s Touch Set depth control supporting the C-shank design. Adding a separate fertilizer coulter system to this drill creates an 1835, allowing for mid row banding along with the trash clearance attributes of a shank seeding unit. The 1870 is well known to prairie producers as it was developed in Saskatchewan as the Conservapak drill. The drill provides individual attention to each seed run. The Simplicity company has a Saskatchewan connection. It distributes Strawtrack’s Seedmaster planting tools in Australia. “We’ve been successful competitors for Canadian products in Australia. Flexi-Coil, Morris, Bourgault are in our market at home and Australian farmers have seen the benefits of our machinery and we think Canadian farmers will see it too,” said Mark Simpson of Simplicity.

In Australia, Simplicity offers seven chassis and steering system configurations. When combined with dry and wet bins and tanks, there are 43 optional setups available.

One version of the four wheel carts has two castor axles

at the front, making backing and tight turns easier.

The larger carts, such as those being demonstrated and offered for sale on the Prairies this year, are mounted to the tank chassis with a king pin, allowing for movement during turns. These units steer through turns, trailing the drill.

Producers are able to add a fully variable rate drive to the seed and product metering system.

The company’s linear actuator system takes over the control from the ground drive

metering in a variable rate application. But should any part of that technology fail, the Simplicity cart can revert to its manual seeding rate adjustments.

“That is very popular for buyers as it means, should their technology let them down at any point, they can keep seeding while waiting for support for their electronics,” said Simpson.

The Simplicity machines use incoming air for the fans to cool the oil that drives them.

The heat from the hydraulics is transferred to the air that carries product to the drill, drying it in the process.

The optional eight inch loading auger has top and bottom controls, making loading termination and clearing possible from the ground or the tank’s top.

If liquid is the fertilizer of choice, the steerable chassis has an optional 4,500 litre stainless steel tank that replaces a dry product

bin. Constructed to match the profile of the dry bins, the stainless tanks blend into the cart’s design.

Up to three large dry tanks and a single small grains or granular inoculant tank are available in the larger cart design that the company hopes to sell in Canada.

The design is capable of managing the largest of bean seeds down to canola. Topcon electronics are used to manage the machines.

“We’ve used Outback Guidance® systems for four to five years now, but the new eDriveX™ is awesome compared to the other units. We used it to plant nearly 1,500 acres of soybeans, edible beans and corn and it’s amazing how straight the rows are, especially when you consider the cost of the Outback system compared to others.”

“We’ve been moving toward a program using the BaselineX™ and Outback S3™ console, where we map the fields every year and then try to go back and plant all our row crops on the same row from year to year. So I pulled up the lines from last year and the eDriveX followed them almost perfectly.”

“Once you use GPS guidance, you’ll never go back. We not only have it on the tractors we use on the planter and air drill, but we use it on the swather in the fall, as well. The time and fatigue it saves is hard to believe until you’ve experienced it.”

Salford isn’t a household name on western Canadian farms, but the company says its machines will be at home in the prairie dirt.

Like other short-line companies that make seeding and tillage equipment, Salford has looked for the proverbial better mousetrap by studying equipment from around the world and then taking a unique approach to several aspects of seeding technology.

The Ontario company has manufactured farm equipment since 1978 under its own name and did custom work for George White farm equipment before that. It also builds in Iowa and Russia.

With the release of the 522 double disc drill and its new poly air cart line, Salford hopes to plant seeds in Western Canada.

“We began looking at no-till in 2002 and moving into areas where tillage has a role in that environment,” said Jim Boak of Salford.

“We have equipment that addresses both needs. The disc drill is very much about working in residue, lots of residue and managing it if you need to.”

Boak said the new drill was designed to be modular and flexible, letting the producer adapt it to many situations.

The frame reaches over the toolbars, five

feet off the ground, and carries the bars below its structure.

Boak said the disc drill openers run in a second wave behind the front coulters, which have hydraulically adjustable height and can be used for mid-row banding of fertilizer for single pass planting.

The front coulters disrupt trash and leave a firm seedbed.

The toolbar accepts Salford disc units or those from other companies, which provides increased flexibility for growers.

“If you have a unit you like or own and want to take advantage of our toolbar, no problem,” Boak said.

The disc drill openers can be placed on any spacing from 3.75 inches over two sets of tool bars, with each run on six inch spacing.

“We are developing a true three inch spacing for the organic industry, where open soil is the enemy in terms of weed suppression,” he said.

“You might want to plant one crop that close to get your seedbed utilization up and then turn around and plant corn at 20 inches, or wheat at 12. It is a very flexible system.”

The disc system is capable of maintaining precise seed depths at relatively high speeds.

“We haven’t got a problem with seeding at nine m.p.h. and getting a very high

quality seed placement. It means that you don’t have to be as wide to get in the bigger acres in a day,” Boak said.

The widest of the units is 40 feet and folds up to transport width of slightly more than 19.5 feet.

The product tanks can be frame or cart mounted. The heavy frame with its high clearance allows producers to accommodate a pull behind or pull between seed and granular product cart.

Cart tanks are plastic and producers can specify if they want one section to be fitted with a liquid or dry metering system.

“We don’t need to add a tank (to the frame); we use the same ones and the farmers choose what they want prior to delivery of the machine,” he said.

The commodity carts also have an optional three-point hitch for other applications including air or liquid booms.

A single or double 13 inch Crary fan is available or an optional single 17.

Dickey-john units monitor and run the metering system as a standard offering, but most other electronics manufacturers’ systems are compatible with the Salford carts.

Tanks are available in 110, 135, 160 and 185 bushel sizes.

Hefting 65 pound bags of canola seed to the top of an air cart is a pain.

The Seed Hawk bag lifter is designed to alleviate that pain with a hydraulically controlled platform capable of handling 550 pounds, according to Seed Hawk president Pat Beaujot.

The parallel linkage arms attach to the air cart frame. A single hydraulic cylinder lifts from ground level to the loading position on the catwalk.

“The whole device is a very simple option,” Beaujot said.

“The arm is less complex than other designs we considered. It’s a simple parallel arm with a long cylinder to provide the stroke. It’s nice because it tucks away behind the catwalk in transport so it doesn’t interfere with everything else that’s going on.

It doesn’t add any width to the machine.”Beaujot said the pickup backs to the correct

spot at the rear of the cart and the platform comes down to where it’s needed.

The operator manually loads the bags to the platform and then sends the platform up to the loading point on the catwalk.

The lift device is used only when the drill is stopped for a fill, so there is plenty of hydraulic capacity available at that time.

Beaujot said Seed Hawk began considering the lift when its customers began asking for dual access catwalks so they could descend to either side of the cart.

Competitors already had the dual access feature, he said, so he decided it was time Seed Hawk had the same.

“Our old catwalk came down the back and you had to crawl under to get to the other side of the seeder,” he said.

“The new catwalk comes forward toward

the hitch, then you can go off to either side. That left us room at the back for a bag lift, so everything happened at once, one of those rare occasions an idea worked the first time.”

The bag lift moves only up and down; there is no side-to-side swing action. It has an adjustable link on the arms to accommodate different tank sizes when attaching the lift.

All new Seed Hawk tanks are built with the necessary mounting points. However, the lift is available only for recent carts.

“If you bought a machine three or four years ago, you can buy the new dual access catwalk,” Beaujot said.

“You can’t install a bag lift unless you have the dual access catwalk. The lifter doesn’t take up too much space, but you have to remove that back ladder to make room for it.”

For more information, contact Beaujot at 306-538-2221 or visit www.seedhawk.com.

Ezee-On of Vegreville, Alta., has been in the farm equipment business for 50 years. The company offers four seed carts and relies on variable rate meter-ing from Zero-Max transmissions on the two larger units, an option on the smaller machines. Should electronic systems fail, a manual override allows producers to keep on seeding until repairs are made. The company offers controlled traffic axle setups and liquid tanks on their carts as options in the Australian market. For more informa-tion visit www.ezeeon.com.

FlExIcOIlFlexicoil remains a brand that many

prairie producers have come to count on. The polyethylene tanks contain 280 to 430 bushels and the two smaller carts have two tanks. The larger has three.

With the ground drive metering sys-tem there are no sprocket changes and the system provides infinitely variable rate changes through a slide adjust-ment. An air valve at each meter sets the airflow for the type and weight of seed or product being handled.

For more information visit www.flexi-coil.com

HORScH AndERSOnHorsch Anderson is a 10 year old company

located in South Dakota. It focuses on small grains seeding and tillage equipment that has its roots in the movement to single pass, reduced tillage seeding in the 1980s.

The company’s commodity carts are ISOBUS compatible, so they can take advantage of integrated monitor systems on many popular tractors. Variable rate carts can be managed from existing electronics. The variable rate meters are also available with the company’s own controllers or can be ordered with the Raven Viper Pro.

The carts are available mounted on dual wheels or tracks and are available in 350 and 500 bushel units.

For more information visit www.horschand-erson.com.

GREAT PlAInSGreat Plains Manufacturing of Salina,

Kansas, has been building seeding equipment since 1976. The company’s semi mounted and fully mounted air drills run up to 40 feet in width. Great Plains has three new drills, a 30 foot unit that carries a pair of 100 bushel dry tanks, one for seed and one fertilizer or both for seed. The 3007HD folds to just 10 feet wide in transport. The 4010HDA is a 40 foot unit with up 350 bushels of seed and fertilizer. The new 2007HD can handle two 82 bushel tanks or a 150, or an 82 and two 200 US gallon liquid tanks.

Star pattern meters keep seed fed to the runs in individual lines, which the company claims ensures accurate metering. For more information visit www.greatplainsmfg.com.

HARmOnHarmon Industries of Saskatoon has five cart models between 190 and

440 bushels. It is one of the few designs that offers PTO and engine driven fan as options to power the air delivery systems. For more information call 306-931-1161.

mORRISSaskatchewan’s Morris Industries offers carts from 240 to 650 bushels

in up to four tanks on a single cart, making true variable rate applications a reality. All of the air systems use the company’s horizontal flow delivery that passes granular product through a flat-fan divider, avoiding sudden changes of direction for delicate seeds and coated products. The company offers controlled traffic axle options for producers. For more information visit www.morris-industries.com.

nEw HOllAndFrom 280 to 580 bushels of seed and dry products the New Holland air

carts are available with individual, variable rate metering for up to three tanks. The Intelliview and Intelliview II monitors provide control over the metering systems. The smallest and largest of the lineup are steel tanks. The others are polyethylene.

SImPlIcITyAustralian seeding equipment manufacturer

Simplicity has brought its machines to North America, starting with Western Canada. In Australia, the com-pany produces a wide variety of air seeding carts in its home market and exports some of its largest to the Canadian Prairies. One of the unique features of Simplicity carts is the ability to adjust the volume of the bins inside the unit. Variable metering can be easily dis-connected, returning the machines to ground drive.

STRAwTRAcKStrawtrack Manufacturing, makers

of Seedmaster, offer twin row seed-ing with a separation of seed and fertilizer that provides a safe distance for high rates of nutrients from even the most delicate of seedlings. The system provides precise seeding as shallow as 1/8 of an inch. Air driven seed delivery uses individual row metering to ensure exact seeding rates. Liquid and dry tenders are available. SAlFORdThe Salford 520 parallel linkage row units

provide a range of 85 to 500 lb. of down pres-sure to match no-till, conservation till and conventional tilled soils with variable amounts of residue.

Single or dual hydraulic lift systems adapt to a wide range of seeding and fertilizing tools, Salford or other brands can be mounted to the toolbars.

The Ontario company provides polyethylene tanks that are easy to clean and that can be used for dry or liquid fertilizer. Tanks can be drill or cart mounted. Combinations of tanks and drills can carry and tow up to 715 bushels of product and seed, making the company’s largest machine, a 40 foot unit, capable of sig-nificant acres between fills.
