I would like to thank TISM Nurse Ms Dukas Imang and Driver Mr Michael Langat for taking me to the Emergency Room, and to the brave souls who carried me from my office to the van downstairs. At times like this, one becomes truly aware of one‟s mortality so I offer a heartfelt thank you to all those who helped me. On a more mundane level, most parents will be aware that next year, we are proposing lengthening the secondary day by 1¼ hours. The review was triggered by a staff survey which showed insufficient time in the day to meet the demands of both the secondary day and of IGCSE classes. This change will provide one more hour of instructional time plus 15 minutes at lunchtime for the extra journey time to the cafeteria and the queuing for service, both of which are current unknowns. We have yet to review the length of the Primary Day, and will advise you once we have done so. Finally, if you are at Bintang Mall this weekend, please drop by our booth and say hello, and if you have a few minutes to spare we would greatly appreciate your help. Dear Parents

Congratulations to coach Mr Peter Bentley and the team on TISM Soccer‟s win this

week, and to coaches Ms Chloe Hickinbottom and Mr Nic Roe on TISM Swimming‟s results at

the Brunei Gala last weekend. Thank you to all the Primary staff for all their work to make this

week‟s “Parent Drop-in” another success.

Today we farewell our Bursar, Ms Sylvia Lo, who leaves us in preparation for her

family‟s return to KL. Thank Sylvia for all your hard work and support of TISM and good luck

and best wishes for your future life.

You may have heard that I had a “health event” earlier this week. Apparently vertigo is

not restricted to standing on high ledges and looking down. For no reason I can establish, I

suddenly lost all balance, felt overwhelmingly nauseous and lost partial consciousness. I was later

vaguely aware of a doctor telling me that something had become detached from the something

and was floating around in the something! I would like to thank TISM Nurse Ms Dukas Imang

and Driver Mr Michael Langat for taking me to the Emergency Room, and to the brave souls who

carried me from my office to the van downstairs. At times like this, one becomes truly aware of

one‟s mortality so I offer a heartfelt thank you to all those who helped me.

On a more mundane level, most parents will be aware that next year, we are proposing

lengthening the secondary day by 1¼ hours. The review was triggered by a staff survey which

showed insufficient time in the day to meet the demands of both the secondary day and of IGCSE

classes. This change will provide one more hour of instructional time plus 15 minutes at

lunchtime for the extra journey time to the cafeteria and the queuing for service, both of which

are current unknowns. We have yet to review the length of the Primary Day, and will advise you

once we have done so.

Finally, if you are at Bintang Mall this weekend, please drop by our booth and say hello,

and if you have a few minutes to spare we would greatly appreciate your help. As always, if you

have any queries or concerns please email me at [email protected]

Have a great week.

You are invited to join the PTA 9.00am Saturday 2 February for a visit to our new site. We will

be travelling in convoy, leaving from the Piasau Campus. If it rains overnight, please bring boots

as the site can be muddy.

and published in next week‟s Newsletter.

The Move to Senadin - Update

Dear Primary Parents,

There was a real buzz on Tuesday morning as parents came in to see all the fun learning happening in the Primary school. Thank you

for participating in this event; it was lovely to see the children‟s faces light up as they shared their learning with you. (Please follow

this link to see a video of the morning - http://tenbymiriprimary.blogspot.com/ )

Thank you for voting on the colour scheme for our new school. The BLUE paint was chosen for the Primary block and the BROWN

and YELLOW for the Primary/Secondary block.

Primary/Secondary block Primary block

We have just watched a super YEAR 5 assembly, where students excelled in dance, singing and acting. What a talented bunch of

students we have in Year 5! Well done!

Don‟t forget Parents evenings next week on Tuesday and Thursday after school. Make an appointment in the files outside the office.

There will be no clubs on Tuesday or Thursday next week for this reason. If you need to bring your children to Parent‟s

Evening, can you please supervise them at all times.

Best wishes

Yvette

Headteacher

Primary Update

Year 9 IGCSE options - Submission date has finally arrived

after the students have been doing much deliberation over what

subjects they will undertake to study over the next two academic

years in Key Stage 4. The unique combination of subjects they

have chosen will give them a programme of study that will

enable them to steer their own individual pathway to specific

areas of education in Key Stage 5 and beyond along with any

career aspirations that they may have.

Secondary reports – Will be available from today, these are

mid-academic interim reports detailing National Curriculum

levels that students are currently achieving along with a grade

for effort in relation to their work ethics. Full written reports will

be available towards the end of the last term.

Parents evening – The reports and other matters arising can be

discussed with individual subject teachers next week on

Thursday 7th February at 4.00pm – 6.30pm in the hall. Letters of

invitation and to make appointment times have been sent out via

students, if you have yet to receive a copy then contact the

school office. At the beginning of the last academic year in

secondary school the student body consisted of 12 pupils in

total, now it has increased to 28 across the year groups and is

continually growing, in respect of this expansion of numbers of

students, next week‟s parents evening has been increased in

duration by 30 minutes to accommodate enough time for

teachers to speak to as many parents and guardians as possible.

We would appreciate it if you could adhere to the 5 minute

period allocated to each appointment with each member of staff

to allow everyone for opportunity to speak with your son/

daughters teachers in secondary.

I hope to see as many of you as possible during next Thursdays

parents evening, until then have a great week.

Secondary Update

On the 30th of January we had our second meeting with TRFC at

House 100, after winning the first meeting. Now we were

hoping to win a second. At 2:40 in the afternoon, the match

begun. It was a very close first half. TRFC had most of the ball

and they had several shooting chances but none of them were

turned into goals.

The half-time whistle blew and the score was 0-0. When the

second half begun, TRFC got the opening goal, Jularab netted in

a nice pass from the wing. 1-0 to TRFC. Then shortly after

Tenby managed to level the score as Joshua scored a nice cross

from Yutaro in the 6 yard box. Score 1-1. Moments later, Yutaro

scored. A mix-up in TRFC‟s penalty box left the unmarked

striker to net home Tenby‟s second of the game, 2-1 to Tenby.

Then as full time neared, TRFC came very close to levelling the

game when a shot hit the post! Down the other end, Tenby also

had a chance to give them a confortable win. But Joshua‟s free

kick flew wide of the far post. The full time whistle blew and

Tenby won their second meeting with TRFC.

Dear Malaysian Parents and Stakeholders,

The next Culture module of the new school year will be

Sarawak and the Entry Point will be on Wednesday 20th

February, 2013. As the subject co-ordinator for Culture, I am

writing to let you, the Malaysian parents and stakeholders, know

how the module operates, to include you in our preparations and

to ask for your support and participation. What has worked well

in the past is if one parent takes on the responsibility of co-

ordinating the other parents in order to get certain jobs done. To

facilitate this, you are invited to a group meeting to discuss the

co-ordination for the module, on Wednesday 6th

February at

12.30-1pm in room 31 ( the Reading Room in the old school

building), so I hope that you can all make it.

Teachers are responsible for delivering lessons in the following

areas: Creative Arts, Newsround/Current Affairs, Traditional

Food, Celebrations, Games/Sports, History and Popular Culture.

If you have any resources, for example, posters, pictures, books,

stories, recipes, items of clothing, 3d objects, dance DVD‟s,

music cd‟s etc., or ideas to assist the teachers with their

preparations, please let me know.

Some parents like to assist a teacher in a particular area and you

are more than welcome to do this if you are interested and

available. This would be on Wednesdays, for four weeks, from

13:25 to 14:10. There is also a Culture Assembly on the

Wednesday afternoon, hosted by Miss Yvette from 13:10-13:25.

„Live‟ appearances by yourselves to talk to the children, or the

loan of resources for the assemblies or the activities, are much

appreciated.

It is the tradition for the parents to provide for and put up the

display in the old school entrance. This needs to be up in time

for the Entry Point (Wednesday 20th

February), and down by

Thursday 27th

March. If you need any resources such as

staples, pins, Blu-Tack, to help you do this, please ask me for

assistance. Laminated „Thailand‟ lettering has already been

made, so do ask for it when you are ready to put up the display.

Feel free to come and see me in room 26 if you have any

questions, however small.

Looking forward to working with you soon and thank you in

advance for your help,

Best wishes,

Julie

Culture Meeting - Malaysian Parents

As mentioned before in the news, Tenby International School

Miri has now also a Dutch school (Nederlandse School Miri).

When Tenby Schools took over Shell‟s Piasau School, they were

committed to contributing and enhancing the Dutch provision

already in existence. We now offer Dutch lessons for Primary

and in the future also for Secondary. Following a year of

preparation, we successfully received the NOB approval from 1st

January 2013 and because of this we decided to have an official

opening.

We invited the Dutch consul for this event and by cutting the

ribbon Mr Chia opened our school on Wednesday 23rd January.

He also unveiled the logo for our new school, the wonderful

hornbill that is so much part of Piasau Camp and Tenby School

Miri.

Recently at Panaga Beach, Brunei, four children were standing

on a 5-meter long, 38cm diameter log which was partially bur-

ied in wet sand and was being splashed by the incoming tide.

The log was stuck in the sand and stable, however as more wa-

ter came in, it gained sufficient buoyancy to float unexpected-

ly. Three children jumped backwards off the log in the direc-

tion of the beach; the fourth slipped or jumped and fell for-

wards, seaward, and the receding sea carried the log over the

child. Despite immediate rescue and resuscitation efforts, the

child passed away as a result of multiple traumas including

serious head injuries caused by the force of the moving log.

Please be aware of such hazards around our beaches.

Take care at the Beach Some confusion exists as to the exact address at our new site –

two different lot numbers have been used on approved plans –

so we are awaiting a final decision from the local government

as to what to use. Secondly, even if postal delivery were possi-

ble, we have no-one at the new site to receive mail. Therefore

please use our PO Box for the next few months :

We are attempting to transfer our current landline telephone

number to our new home. Until this is confirmed, and until we

have someone at the new site to answer calls, please make a

note of our handphone / mobile / cell number :

016 – 596 6387 The landline will of course work until at least the end of the

academic year.

As part of the school administrative improvement efforts, we have ceased the collection of school fees in cash with effect from 1st

February 2013. Other miscellaneous fees will still be collected in cash unless informed otherwise. The school no cash policy will

help to mitigate the risks of lost, theft and improve safety in and around the school.

As usual, payments can be made by cheque or bankers‟ drafts made payable to “Essential Educare Sdn. Bhd.” or by credit card*.

You may make used of our new Express Cheque Drop Box. Simply write your child(ren)‟s name & year group and drop the cheque

into the box. Our Accounts Department will collect them and receipts will be issued to you accordingly.

payment process. This way you do not have to be physically present at the school office and no hassle with the unpredictable queue.
