In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God’s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. If we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words filling our mouths.

May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and re-spond generously to God's gift of their vocation.

TRADITIONS OF OUR FAITH On February 2, Candelaria will be celebrated. On this day the cleansing of Mary is comme-morated, forty days after she gave birth to Jesus. Candelaria comes from the Latin verb candere (to shine), hence the word candela, that is, candle. The celebration of the Purification of Mary and the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the temple is comme-morated with the blessing of all the candles and candles that will be used during the year. This is done in the hope that there will never be a lack of light, both material and spiritual, in the houses of the faithful. Christians, like Simeon in the temple, can say that they too have seen salvation; Jesus the true light that shines in the arms of Mary.

We are approaching our 100 year Anniversary of the our parish in Sanger (1922) even tough the Catholic presence in the area can be traced back to 1890. Sever-al buildings are still present for our church actiuvities: the Rectory and the Church on O St (1947), Church in Del Rey (1960) , the Hall (1962), Classrooms (1976) New Church (2000). In order to receive the conditional use permit for the parking of the hall, the City of Sanger requires that we build a block wall on the back of the property. We will have to remove the portable classrooms in five years New permanent classrooms will be necessary. How are we going to raise the necessary money? In the past four years we raised with your dedication $600,000 to re-place all roofs, and do other improvements. On January 18 , 2018 we held a meeting with the parish groups and they unanimously approved to a new capital campaign(2018, 2019, 2020) to be able to do what is needed especially for our Catholic children. Will we support this work of the Lord? These are the projects planned:

Hall Parking with new lights $274,650 (Amount on Deposit with Diocese to begin in April) Block Wall $78,000 (estimate) New Classrooms $591,888 (estimate in 2018) New AC/H in Hall and other Needs) $150,000 (guess estimate) City and PG&E Fees not includes TOTAL CAMPAIGN GOAL $800,000

Announcement Sunday February 4, 2018 Pledge Sunday February 11, 2018 Pledge is a promise to give a donation monthly for three years (2018, 2019, 2020)
