PRESIDENT’S PEN

Now slimmer of the year is over for 2017 I would like to say a BIG thank you to all who attended and hope you and your entrants enjoyed the day! The committee worked very hard to make the day as enjoyable as possible with lots of colour and raffles. It is a very long day for us and thanks must go to all who stayed to help us with the c lean-up. It’s always a big job! CONGRATULATIONS to all our winners - a full list is printed in this newsletter. The weights were very close this year. Last year’s winner Naomi Anderson was presented with the Diamond Award, for keeping her weight off for a full year and with a further loss of 11.9 kgs. Congratulations also go to Kerry Galloway who was Slimmer of the year in 2015 and still looks great. So who will be our winner in 2018?? It was really lovely that some of the entrants shared their stories about their journey and shared their loss with the help of their clubs, presidents and committees are committed to help their members, so for all your dedication and hard work the FEDERATION applauds you. To those who donated prizes (a list is on another page) and who won them and the money boards -congratulations. There were 164 members on the day. It was a shame no-one from TRIGG – MONTREAUX – WANNEROO - HAMERSLEY – HILLARYS – ROCKINGHAM and WESTMINSTER as there were some good weight losses. Once again THANK YOU to the committee, to LYN for the scrumptious cake which looked good but tasted better. To Jenny from CANNINGTON for your help and the balloons, to my daughter-in-law LIESA for taking the photos and we will keep you informed when they are ready to be picked up Wendy Castagna from MONTREAUX club was unable to attend the SOY due to ill health we wish her all the best for a speedy recovery.

Page 4: THE FEDERATION NEWS OF THE WEIGHT WATCHERS FEDERATION (WA INC.)weightwatchersfederationwa.org.au/wp-content/uploads/... · 2017-04-29 · Weight Watchers Federation Committee 2015/2016

As for the clubs putting in entrants, we need to find out if they are at all interested in attending on the day. If not, then surely someone from the club could attend. (I am not referring to country clubs). It is a great day to celebrate a weight loss, so why would you not want to be acknowledged? Putting in an entrant and not any one from the club being there to receive the award on their behalf is very disappointing! Clubs that have medals outstanding –can you please arrange for someone to pick them up from the office. Country medals and certificates will be posted. Please call first to make sure the office is attended. I was VERY happy to announce a host for the Country Forum and I sincerely thank SAFETY BAY Weight Watchers, Christine, committee and members. Details will be in each newsletter with accommodation, it will be held on OCTOBER 28TH 2017. Any members wanting to use the government bus can book it for that day or weekend. Please read the newsletter to keep up to date!! Here is some info that might interest members.

2013…..31 entrants with 398 kilo loss = av.12.8 2014…..31 entrants with 440 kilo loss = av.14.1 2015 ….33 entrants with 374 kilo loss = av. 11.3 2016…. 25 entrants with 276 kilo loss = av.11.0 2017…..27 entrants with 330 kilo loss = av.12.2. I think you will agree that is consistent!

Good luck for 2018.

And Presidents please encourage your entrant and club members to support

your nomination.

There are still a few surveys outstanding so please post them to us. Results will be published in future newsletters. Till next time. All the best. Aileen.

W.W.F COMMITTEE NEWS

The next member on my list is BERYL BARNES

from Karkana club in Bunbury.

Beryl joined the Federation on the 15th March 1969 – how precise is that!! Her mum Mrs Mungar was a founding member of the club and the first meeting was at the Bunbury regional hospital. A good place to be. Unfortunately, she can’t attend meetings at the moment as a back operation left her with a slight problem with her legs. We wish her well.

Next is JEAN GUTTRIDGE from Hamersley/Warwick.

I have no age for Jean but she has been a member since the club was formed in 1973, so has been a member for 44 years! Also in that same club is their oldest member LINLEY GOULD who is a spring chicken at 78. Will keep you up-dated in future newsletters. Sheila State Secretary

STATE TREASURER REPORT

I would like to thank all the clubs who sent in their Public Liability Insurance payment promptly. By now you should have received the Public Liability Insurance Certificate for your records. Please keep it in a safe place. Well in July at the A.G.M. my time is up. I have been on the Federation committee now for 4 years and 3 years’ full time as the State Treasurer. Hopefully there is some-one out there amongst the clubs who would like to do this portfolio. It is a responsible job and can be time consuming as it is all put into the computer. Shirley Sardelich State Treasurer.

DIANELLA WEIGHT WATCHERS

Hi to you all,

Dianella has got some much focused people at the moment, with the help and

encouragement of other members and the weekly advice from our president

Danna and the support of the committee, they are on their way to reach their

goal weights.

Dianella’s entrant for slimmer of the year was Gaylia. She has lost an amazing

15.6kg over the last 12 months. She attends the meeting regularly and has an

active role on the committee.

Our member Frank is keeping focused to reaching his goal weight as he

continues to improve his performance in his bike riding. He is doing extremely

well as he joins our other members Lou, Lyn and Adrianna as they have all

reached their consistency award during April. We all congratulate you!!

A super weight loss of 3.1kg at one weigh in during April was Graham after he

returned from holidays. He certainly had the willpower and kick started himself

back on track for the following weeks.

We will be attending a celebration dinner at the end of April for our graduate -

Eunice who has now reached her goal weight. We will be attending The Song

Thai Restaurant, in Bayswater.

Until next month enjoy this beautiful weather,

Regards

Carol.

BELMONT WEIGHT WATCHERS

Belmont Weight Watchers certainly has had a lot to celebrate over the last few

weeks. Our club’s overall weekly record continues to be in the blue, meaning a

net loss, and the club was awarded another 4-week daisy. Julie and Sue also

received daisies and all grads are maintaining their goal weight. Well done

everyone – especially with all the Easter treats in the shops.

It’s nearly time for the Slimmer of the Year competition. Our candidate is Terri

Williams, who was also Queen of the month. Congratulations to Terri for her

sustained effort!

We celebrated the birthdays of Ros T-B,

Bev and Sandra, but the biggest party was

a “hen’s day” for Maureen who married

her beau John. The happy couple is now

on safari in Africa. All of us at Belmont

wish them lots of love and happiness.

On a more serious note, President Linda

spent some time reviewing emergency

procedures. The club purchased a

resuscitation poster from St John

Ambulance and this sparked a discussion

of what to do in emergencies. For

example, should an ambulance be

needed, you will be asked for the name of

the nearest cross street. Ours is now

written on the bottom of the poster. For individuals, if you take medication it’s

important to have a list of the names and dosages. Also important is an

emergency contact. Many people now add these details under the name ICE –

In Case of Emergency – to their mobile phone contact list. Obviously no one

wants to have to use this information but it’s much better to be prepared.

Thanks to Ros T-B suggesting this important topic and acquiring the poster.

Page 9: THE FEDERATION NEWS OF THE WEIGHT WATCHERS FEDERATION (WA INC.)weightwatchersfederationwa.org.au/wp-content/uploads/... · 2017-04-29 · Weight Watchers Federation Committee 2015/2016

I’m not superstitious but…as soon as I wrote about Belmont WW having our great start to the year, we promptly had an overall gain L …and don’t even ask about the week after Easter! Let’s hope we’re getting back on track – see below for some ideas. Despite the overall gain we still had a number of individual awards given out: 6kg loss green ribbon for Sue 4-week daisies for: Anne, Sue Sue was also Queen of the Month and received a Gold Star for her12-week loss Our Grads continue to do well with all maintaining their weight for 3 months: Jean H, Jean C, Joyce, Bev, Barbara and Rosemarie At Belmont, if a member gains weight over 4 consecutive weeks, a black ribbon is awarded. This can be returned when the member gets back to the weight before the 4-week gain. Last week Janet handed back her black ribbon – well done! We also celebrated the birthdays of Julie, Rosemarie and Marie. Long-time member Beryl shared an interesting article that may help with the after-Easter blues:

Diet Mistakes – are you making any of these? Not eating breakfast This can slow down your metabolism. Even if you hate breakfast, try to eat a little bit, especially protein.

Not eating enough Again, this may slow your metabolism. If you can’t face a big meal, try smaller meals more often.

Hidden extras: sauces, dressings, portion size Ask for sauces and dressings on the side, and know your portion sizes.

Sabotage Avoid people who don’t support you – “one piece won’t hurt” “you don’t need to lose weight”

Eating in front of the TV If you’re distracted, you may eat more without noticing it. Pay attention to what you’re eating and enjoy the meal.

Watch out for food marked low fat/sugar/carbs This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s low in calories. Maggie

WASPS BUSSLETON

Hello to everyone in " elsewhere ". Apologises for not getting off a newsletter last month but unforeseen medical problems overtook me at the crucial time. Fingers crossed now as I feel I'm on the up again. Our ladies are only missing one meeting to date because of the school holidays. So far we all feel pretty good about our achievements of late. Sometimes it seems like we are experts at doing the yoyo trick, and when you least expect it, the scales are favouring you again. The Forest Highway has taken a beating these holidays, feel sure all of the city folk have emptied into the Geographe Bay Area and Margs. Now there's a rumour that next holiday long weekend the "main roads " will close overtaking lanes! What ....,! So many boats and caravans squeezed their way thru, all in a desperate hurry to get here. And then guess what, it's a long weekend so we must stock up on food! Why is it that holidays turn folk into ravenous cavemen? The smash and grab trolleys filling up as if there was no tomorrow! This is a holiday town and the shops are only shut on the Friday and most delis are open at some period. So why the rage and panic? Well I've had my say now and do feel better and thank goodness there were no serious accidents. Raffle books arrived safely, thank you, and will be distributed at our next meeting. Almost soup time again, I think pumpkin is still the most popular overall, though members may have a good new idea we can try. Please no chicken feet or pigs head though, just wouldn't work for me! That's about all for now, Kind regards, Valerie (hon sec)

GREENWOOD WEIGHT WATCHERS

First our club would like to thank The Federation for a great day at the “The Slimmer of the Year”. Greenwood members are elated on the club winning “The Slimmer of the Year”. We are very proud of our winner Pauline Green. Our club trophy has now been installed in a new cabinet thanks to member Tony Easterby. Thanks Tony! Hope you all enjoyed Easter, now it’s back to starting new goals with great fervour and positive thoughts about food. Sugar seem to be the food doing all the damage at the moment. When you know how much sugar is in fruit it makes realise why they only recommend two fruits a day. 1 Apple= 4 teaspoons of sugar. No more celebrating holidays for a while. We won’t have the temptations being put under our noses. Good luck with all your lifestyle changes! Susan

Weight Watchers Federation would like to thank and acknowledge the following persons for their help/assistance or donation in our annual Slimmer of the Year raffles.

ELLENBROOK COMMUNITY WEIGHT LOSS CLUB

Hope everyone had a lovely Easter.

Just had some flyers printed up for the club and I will be going to the local

shops, doctor’s surgeries, dentist etc. to see if I can put some in the sitting

rooms and notice boards. I have tried everything, advertising on Curtin radio

had a write up and photo in the local newspaper and have not had one new

member.

We have now been going for ten years in May and our numbers seem to be

getting smaller and smaller. If it wasn't for the members travelling from

Chittering, Clarkson and Dianella and Noranda (10 members) I don't know if

Ellenbrook could continue. At one stage we had 40 members and that was when

there were about 4 different Newspapers in the area and the City of Swan had

an electronic notice board as you drove into Ellenbrook advertising our club, but

over the years this has all died and now we have only one newspaper.

We have two members who have been having a bad trot. Sue Ball had a massive

stroke, but she does not seek astound me. The doctors saved her life because

got to the hospital in time to save her and now she is back on track and came

back to Weight Watchers last week.

Carol Eisenhauher who has had big problems with her eye, I believe bleeding at

the back of the eye and she has to have needles in her eye. We wish both these

ladies well and a speedy recovery.

One of our long standing members and Treasurer Brenda Bettis has been losing

weight since February and was awarded her 12-week Consistency Award for not

gaining weight for 12 weeks and weighing in every week. She was presented

with a certificate and $50.00 cash. She is also on the Apple Tree with Carol

Eisenhauer & this has being going since February. Keep up the good work

ladies.

Carol Eisenhauer has been losing weight now for 14 months and has never gain

in all that time & only missed 1 weigh-in. This is a tremendous effort & I

congratulate her, she is also a Graduate of the club and had her Goal Weight

lowered.

Page 15: THE FEDERATION NEWS OF THE WEIGHT WATCHERS FEDERATION (WA INC.)weightwatchersfederationwa.org.au/wp-content/uploads/... · 2017-04-29 · Weight Watchers Federation Committee 2015/2016

I would like to congratulate the three top winners of this year’s Slimmer of the

Year, they did so well with their weight losses & also the other recipients.

Congratulations to our member Pauline Olsen who did very well. We had a few

members attend the luncheon and they enjoyed themselves,

Our club pays for our Slimmer of the year’s lunch and also subsides 1/2 the

members lunch who attends on the day also. We feel that they made the effort

to come and support our S.O.Y. so we repaid them by paying half of their meal.

We also buy some drinks for the day. So our members really have a good time.

Unfortunately myself and John cannot sit with them all the time to enjoy their

company as being Federation committee members, we have to work on the

day.

I put out a survey within the club and had about 12 questions for the members

to answer. It is very interesting to go through them and see what the members

think and how we can improve the club. Every member will receive a copy of

the answers to all the questions so they can now access them also.

In our club when any new member joins up we give them a copy of our club's

Constitution and Rules & Regulations. So they know how the club is run and

what the club’s rules are.

Until next time. Shirley Sardelich Club President.

SWITCH TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE AND REAP THE REWARDS Column by Annette Sym

I used to be the diet queen. It wasn’t until I decided to give up dieting and become a healthy person that my life changed; I was finally able to lose 35 kilos and have been in my healthy weight range for over 23 years. To have good health and wellbeing you must have an eating regime that includes a balanced intake of foods from all the food groups in moderate portions. You should also include regular exercise. Don’t think of it as a short-term ‘diet’ but a long-term lifestyle change. Here are my tips for switching to healthier food choices: MAKE CHANGES GRADUALLY Don't expect to become a healthy person overnight, if you change your habits too dramatically then you may find it hard to stick to the routine. Make changes gradually and permanently e.g. if you hate skim milk, start with trim and after a while progress to skim milk. ENJOY PLENTY OF WHOLE GRAINS, FRUITS AND VEGIES The best way is to experiment and try lots of different ways to cook using these food groups. It is recommended to have between 2-4 serves of fruit and 3-5 serves of vegetables a day. And when it comes to grains try to have wholegrain instead of white bread, rice or pasta. EAT MODERATE PORTIONS The recommended serve of meat for a main meal is around 90 grams (cooked) or similar in size to the palm of your hand. A serve of fish is 150 grams, equivalent to the palm and fingers of your hand. A serve of fruit should be a medium piece of fruit or around 150 grams. The perfect plate of food should be 1/2 vegetables or salad, 1/4 carbohydrates, and 1/4 lean protein. KNOW YOUR WEAKNESSES To become healthier, you first need to know what you are doing wrong. A great way to see where you are going wrong is to write down everything you eat for a few days, underline everything that is unhealthy and circle everything that is healthy. If there are too many lines, you know it’s time to change. If there is one food you are eating too much of, make sure it doesn’t end up in the supermarket trolley. QUIT DIETING Remember dieting doesn't work. All you achieve on a diet is hunger and deprivation then once you quit the diet all the weight goes back on and usually more. All food can be enjoyed in moderation. There is no need to feel guilty every time you have a biscuit or bowl of ice-cream; as long as you eat in moderation as part of a healthy balanced plan. Overeating is one of the main causes to obesity.

You have to start somewhere, why not start with by working on one of the above each week; at the end of

five weeks you will have created some great new healthy habits.

Australia’s favourite weight loss mentor, Annette Sym, has given her best-selling cookbook series SYMPLY

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE a fresh, new look. Same great recipes with delicious new images, step by step

ESPERANCE WEIGHT WATCHERS

Queen of the Month was Joy Rolland with a loss of 2.4kgs. Lady of the Month was Jenny McKenzie with a loss of 1.2kg. We had 25 members weigh-in last meeting, this is a great improvement on past weigh-ins. We have had 5 new members since the beginning of 2017, perhaps Molly’s flyers are starting to spread their wings!! Once again we have been blessed with Guest speakers from all different avenues, Molly our social secretary seems to be coming up trumps each month when her invited guest turns up to speak with us. Andrea from Community Health has been to give us an in-depth talk on mindful eating. Healthy mind Healthy Body. A few points were brought to our attention, was when you eat sit at the table without TV, newspaper, computer or iPad and chew your food at least 30 to 50 times, watch the clock and try to make your meal last at least 20 minutes. These are a few ideas to improve your mindful eating! All is well in the Bay of Isles. Warm regards Jeanette. Esperance Secretary. PS. Molly has reminded us she is not the Secretary. An error was made in the April newsletter. She is our Social Secretary and is doing a good job out and about scouting for guest speakers and community relations for our club.

SWAN BASSENDEAN COMMUNITY WEIGHT LOSS GROUP

Swan Bassendean has been busy with lots of competitions and weight loss. Kerri Lock was our Slimmer of the year and was presented with a Trophy and $50 for her effort. 10 members attend the Slimmer of the Year Function and would like to say thank you to the WWF committee for a lovely day. Lyn Lock is our first Queen for the year and was awarded $40 and Pauline won $25 for winning the lemon tree competition.

As a group we have lost 30 kgs so far this year and emptied the marble jar of 300 marbles (1 marble equals 100grams). We rewarded the members with a meeting and free coffee at the Dome Café in Bassendean. It was a lovely night with a few members enjoying a meal there as well. We are now well on our way of emptying it again. We held an Easter challenge (lose weight or stay the same over the Easter break and earn a free night) and 13 members stepped up to the challenge. We are now having an ANZAC challenge as our meeting fell on ANZAC Day and the RSL hall wasn’t available. Hopefully more members will keep the weight off. As a group we also run a free night loyalty card (lose weight or stay the same for 6 meetings and the next meeting is free). This year we are averaging 2 members a week earning a free night. We had a guest speaker from the Heart Foundation, who talked about heart health and strokes. A very informative session emphasizing the importance of a healthy diet and exercise for a healthy heart function. Take care and keep smiling Swan Bassendean CWLG

HILLARYS WEIGHT WATCHERS

We have just had our first Apple Tree competition for the year running for 6 weeks from 28th February to 4th April. We had 2 winners who received $100.00 each, they were Coral Wolfenden and Helen Smith. Congratulations to both of you. Our club also sends congratulations to all representatives of the Slimmer of the Year Competition. Another successful year. Hope everyone enjoyed Easter but not too much. Merrilee Secretary.

MOORE RIVER WEIGHT WATCHERS

Just a quick thank you for sending us the lovely Slimmer of the Year Certificate

and Medal for our Jeanette Spadanuda. Needless to say, she was thrilled. She has tried very hard all year to lose weight and we are all very proud of her effort. I wish we all had that determination.

Regards Inga
