During this Lenten Season, we con nue with our parishioners stories of living their faith. Today:

Brando Alcazar’s Story

My spiritual experiences in the church of St. Igna us of Loyola in Chicago, Illinois.

In all instances in our lives, God is with us, because He is our Creator, it doesn’t ma er what happens, He looks at us with love and goodness. In 1975, when I came from Peru to the USA, first to New York, New Jersey, to finally arriving in 1980 to the city of Chicago, where I set roots. I have been Catholic since my childhood, following the teaching of my parents, but it has been here, at St. Igna us, that I have deepened my faith. I came to St. Igna us Catholic Church), in 1981 and during all these years, I have had all kinds of experiences, including some unhappy, but with the grace of God I was able to overcome the bad with faith and humbleness. In the following paragraphs, I’ll narrate with more details the more prominent religious experiences that have le a mark in my religiosity. God, with his infinite love, gave me the gi of sing-ing, so I started par cipa ng in parish choirs around Chicago, especially at San Igna us. Since I arrived, I have sung God’s songs, praise and psalms with rev-erence and respect. This was a very gra fying expe-rience, allowing me to live every Sunday with im-mense joy and an authen c spirituality, because singing is like praying twice to the Lord, and gives a high level of joy and rest in the Spirit. On the other hand, as being Coro Hispano Coordina-tor, I learned to be very much on me. I was the first one to be there and the last one to leave. Ge ng to the parish early, I could prepare the sound equip-ment; at the end, I would put everything back in place. A er some me, due to the many responsibil-i es that this brought, I got other members to help. I would tell them: “If you arrive 5 minutes before the start me, you are on me. If you are on me, you are late. And if you are late, you are not here”. Being on me means order, discipline, respect and respon-sibility. Being on me is the soul of politeness. Be-cause of that, I can say that with the responsibility

Mis experiencias espirituales en la iglesia de San Ignacio de Loyola de Chicago, Illinois.

En todos los instantes de nuestras vidas Dios está con nosotros, porque es nuestro Creador, no importando las circunstancias Él nos ve con amor y bondad.

Era el año de 1975 cuando emigré del Perú hacia los EEUU, arribando primero a New York, New Jersey, para después tomar rumbo en 1980 a la ciudad de Chicago donde me establecí. Desde niño he profesa-do el catolicismo por la enseñanza de mis padres, pero ha sido aquí en san Ignacio en que he profundi-zado mi fe. Vine a la parroquia de san Ignacio de Chicago (St. Igna us Catholic Church), en el año de 1981 y durante todos estos años tuve experiencias de todo po, incluso algunas desagradables, pero con la gracia de Dios las pude superar con fe y humil-dad. En los siguientes párrafos voy a ir detallando las principales experiencias espirituales que han marca-do mi vida religiosa.

Dios con su infinita misericordia me infundió el don de la voz, lo cual me animó a par cipar en los coros parroquiales de Chicago, especialmente en el de san Ignacio, en el que desde que llegué interpreto sus cantos, alabanzas y salmos con reverencia y respeto. Esta fue una gra ficante vivencia, que me permi ó vivir cada domingo momentos de plena alegría y au-tén ca experiencia espiritual, pues es como orar do-blemente al Señor y como que me transporto a un nivel de gozo y descanso en el mismo espíritu.

De otro lado, al ser nominado Coordinador del Coro Hispano de san Ignacio, aprendí a ser sumamente puntual. Yo era el primero en llegar a la parroquia y el úl mo en salir. Al llegar temprano podía armar el equipo de sonido y todo lo necesario antes de la mi-sa; al terminar guardaba todo con la ayuda de otros miembros del coro. Al poco empo, con la debida an cipación, asignaba a tres miembros que realicen esas labores cada domingo. Debido a que la gran res-ponsabilidad del coro recaía en mí, tuve que estable-cer ciertas obligaciones para todos los miembros y les decía: “Si llegas cinco minutos antes de la hora, estás a empo. Si llegas a empo, ya estás tarde. Y si llegas tarde, ya no estás”. La puntualidad significa

on to the Lord of the Miracles, a rich tradi on we brought from Peru and we have been celebra ng for 42 years in Chicago and since 1981 in St. Igna -us. Thanks to Father Paul Brandt, who was the pas-tor at the me, and welcomed our Lord of the Mira-cles image, from Our Lady of Lourdes of Chicago. The removal of a confessional was needed to build a permanent altar, to the right side of the shrine. This devo on allows thousands of faithful and their fam-ilies to have many spiritual experiences. Since then, the celebra on consists of a Mass on the third Sun-day of October, presided by a Bishop of Chicago, joined by two or more priests and the deacons. A er the Mass, we take the image of Our Lord of the Miracle in a procession on the streets, over a sea of purple habits that brothers and sisters wear that day, including children, singers, people carrying incense, and a band, giving it the pilgrimage a reli-gious and devo onal characterizes it. The Mass and the procession are moments of sublime emo on for me. I feel that Christ calls me and I’m coming back, like the prodigal son coming back home for a long conversa on. The Mexican community in St. Igna us celebrates Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, with a Mass celebrated by a Bishop of Chicago. And the Ecuadorian community celebrates Our Lady of the Cloud on January 1st with a Mass and a procession. It is important to men on that the countless faithful who par cipate in these devo ons also experience, deep spiritual joy and communal experience. These celebra ons to God and a spiritual awakening. orden, disciplina, respeto y responsabilidad. La pun-tualidad es el alma de la cortesía. Por ello puedo de-cir que como coordinador del coro pude compar r con los demás otra gran experiencia espiritual, pues con esas normas forjé mi espíritu y el de los demás coristas, en disciplina y respeto por la alabanza gru-pal.

Nuestra parroquia reúne no solo a las comunidades anglosajona y afro-americana, sino a varias comuni-dades hispano-hablantes, siendo tres las que atraen a gran número de fieles que llegan a nuestra iglesia, quienes con mucha fe y alegría organizan sus conme-moraciones y rinden homenaje a sus fiestas tradicio-nales.

La colonia peruana se encarga de la veneración al Señor de los Milagros, tradición que trajimos desde Perú y que venimos celebrando por 42 años en Chicago y en san Ignacio desde 1981. Esto fue gra-cias al Rev. Padre Paul Brandt, quien en esa épo-ca era el Párroco y aceptó la transferencia de la ima-gen del Señor de los Milagros, desde la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes de Chicago, a nuestro templo. Se tuvo que remover un confesionario para construirle su altar permanente, ubicado al lado de-recho del templo después de pasar la entrada princi-pal. Esta devoción logra que miles de devotos y sus familiares, experimenten muchísimas experiencias espirituales. Desde entonces, la fes vidad consiste en una misa cada tercer domingo, de octubre de ca-da año, la cual es presidida por el Obispo de Chicago, concelebrada con dos o más sacerdotes y diaconada con los respec vos diáconos. Después de la misa lle-vamos en procesión la imagen del Señor de los Mila-gros en su anda, por todo el perímetro de la iglesia, sobre un mar de hábitos morados que en ese día vis-ten hermanos y hermanas, incluso niños, así como cantoras y sahumadoras y una banda de música, dándole el simbolismo religioso y popular que le ca-racteriza. La misa y luego la procesión son otros mo-mentos de sublime emoción para mí, pues siento que Cristo me llama y yo vuelvo, como el hijo pródi-go vuelve a su casa para una mayor conversión.

La comunidad mexicana en san Ignacio celebra la devoción a la Virgen de Guadalupe el día 12 de di-ciembre, con una misa oficiada por el Obispo de Chicago. Asimismo, la devoción a la Virgen de la Nu-be se realiza cada primero de enero por la comuni-dad ecuatoriana con misa y procesión. Es importante

This was another me of deep spiritual experience, hav-ing the responsibility of organizing the Mass and procession, leading to a growing and strengthening of my spiritual life. Do you know that God gets angry? My ancestors talked about “God’s wrath”. Jesus threw out the Pharisees when they turned the temple into a mar-ket. He got angry and drove out the merchants. God is sad and upset for the bad things we have done. We are destroying ourselves and destroying every-thing He did with all his love, the world, humanity and all of his crea on. I don’t believe that this pan-demic of COVID-19 is God’s punishment, but a warn-ing, like when parents reprimand their children, like telling us you are not following my teachings, if you don’t repent, I’ll send something worse. I hope that with God’s help, this pandemic bring an honest re-newal, that humanity will change its a tude, leav-ing behind hate, resentment, pride, all the nega ve stuff. We are humbly called to imitate our Lord Jesus Christ. At the same me, during this health crisis when millions of people are dying, including friends and family, I have been par cipa ng in the Igna an spiritual exercises in our parish. These exercises have increased my faith, reading the Bible daily, strengthening the spirit of the Church, as always looking to become a saint. Finally, you could say that my spiritual experiences, in these 40 years of par cipa ng in St. Igna us Par-ish, have been plenty, from the graces received, to the learning experiences, as an individual and as a group, even during crisis, but always full of love, faith and hope. Par cipo en la celebración del Señor de los Milagros por 40 años consecu vos, ocupando diferentes car-gos en la Hermandad del Señor de los Milagros de Chicago, ins tución creada en 1979, de la cual tam-bién fui su presidente, cargo que jamás soñé en ser elegido. Eso fue otro momento excelso de profunda espiritualidad, llegando a organizarle su misa y proce-sión durante mi presidencia y así tuve un ambiente propicio para que esta espiritualidad se expanda y robustezca.

¿Saben que Dios también se enoja? mis antepasados hablaban lo de “la ira de Dios”. Jesús arrojó a los fari-seos cuando convir eron su casa en un mercado, en-tonces Él se enojó y expulsó a los mercaderes. Dios está como triste y enojado por las barbaridades que hemos come do, estamos autodestruyéndonos y destruyendo todo lo que Él hizo con todo su amor, el mundo, la humanidad y toda su creación. No creo que esta pandemia del COVID-19 sea un cas go de Dios, sino más bien una advertencia como cuando los padres reprenden a sus hijos, y como diciéndonos no están cumpliendo mis enseñanzas, si no corrigen sus errores les mandaré algo peor. Ojalá Dios nos ilumi-ne y que esta pandemia sea de verdadera conver-sión, para que la humanidad cambie de ac tu-des, dejando el odio, rencor, soberbia y todo lo nega-

vo, e imitemos la humildad de nuestro Señor Jesu-cristo. Coincidentemente, en estos empos de crisis sanitaria en que enferman y mueren millones de per-sonas, incluyendo familiares y amistades, desde hace unas semanas par cipo en ejercicios espirituales de nuestra parroquia, lo cual ha acrecentado mi fe y hasta he iniciado habituales lecturas bíblicas que for-talece el espíritu de Iglesia, así como la voluntad de siempre buscar la san dad.

En suma, podría decir que mis experiencias espiritua-les en estos 40 años de mi par cipación en la parro-quia de San Ignacio han sido múl ples, sean por los dones recibidos como por las responsabilidades que tuvimos, sean de índole personal, como comunitarias y aun en empo de crisis; pero, siempre fueron llenas de amor, de fe y de esperanza.

Many of our long-time parishioners are aware that the sisters that taught at St. Ignatius elementary school were members of the Holy Childhood of Je-sus. Their founder being Mother Cornelia Connel-ly. Besides starting the order, she also founded the Mayfield School in Mayfield, East Sussex, Eng-land. The school was established to educate young women regardless of their ability to pay. The motto of the school is “Actions Not Words.” While not exactly the same as the motto of Ignatian Services, the motto does encourage us to be active. At Igna-tian Services, we try to be active in helping our neighbors in need. We strive to feed the hungry of the community. While we may not have the means to help with rent, or housing or clothing or other ser-vices, we do have the information about who can provide these services. When a family comes to the food pantry, we take the time to listen to the many needs they may have. When appropriate we make the referrals to the appropriate agency whether its Catholic Chari-ties, Council for Jewish Elderly or Methodist Social Services to name a few. So, even though the Sisters of the Holy Childhood of Jesus are no longer active at our parish, their spirit lives on in Ignatian Services. Igna an Services Muchos de nuestros feligreses de muchos años saben que las monjas que enseñaron en la escuela primaria de San Ignacio eran miembros de la Sagrada Infancia de Jesús. Su fundadora fue Madre Cornelia Conne-lly. Además de fundar la orden, también fundo la Escuela Mayfield en Mayfield, East Sussex, Inglate-rra. La escuela fue establecida para educar jóvenes mujeres sin importar su habilidad para pagar. EN Servicios Ignacianos, tratamos de ser personas de acción ayudando a nuestros vecinos necesitados. Nos esforzamos por alimentar a los hambrientos en nues-tra comunidad. Aunque no tengamos ayuda con la renta, o vivienda, o ropa u otros servicios, tenemos la información sobre quienes ofrecen esos servicios.

Cuando una familia viene a la despensa, nos tomamos el tiempo para escuchas sus muchas necesidades que puedan te-ner. Cuando es necesario, los referimos a la agencia apropiada, sea Caridades Católicas, Consejo para Ancianos Ju-díos, o Servicio Social Metodista para nombrar algunos. Así que, aunque las Hermanad de la Sagrada Infancia de Je-sús no se encuentran en nuestra parro-quia, su espíritu vive en Servicios igna-cianos.
