Unity Building, 913 Tracy Avenue VOL. II KANSAS CIT\, MO., THURSDAY, OCT. 20, 1910 NO. 24 THE LAST JUDGMENT Extracts from Charles Fillmore’s Sun- day morning talk in Unity Auditorium, October 16, 1910 (Text, Matt. 25). Jesus taught that there is a power in man which gives him authority over the things of the world. This Principle is the Higher Self, the Spiritual Man, the Christ. If we would succeed we must bring forth this Principle. It gives dominion and mas- tery. The description of the last judgment given in the Gospels has been used to ter- rify men and women and thus compel them to unite with the church; but in this day of enlightenment people are not so easily led or driven by fear. They ask for un- derstanding. When they do seek light con- cerning the judgment it is given, and they learn that it is all a matter of Law—the very law of Being. They find that for every departure from this Law they must suf- fer, not in some future time of great trib- ulation, not in a great judgment after death, but here and now. What is the Law? It is that universal something in us of which we are all con- scious, that tells us when we are doing right and when we are doing wrong. It may be defined as the innate knowing of right and wrong, and this knowing may be quickened, cultivated. This quickening does not come by the study of material things, but by concentrating the mind upon the Higher Power, the Christ within. This brings us to the realization of what Jesus meant when he said, “The Son of man shall come in his glory and shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left.” The Son of man is the Di- vine Power in man. It is that in us which knows. The Son of man is not, far away, and his “angels” are with him. Angels are the true concepts of the Absolute. Every man has within him the sheep and the goats. The goats are thoughts of op- position, resistance, stubbornness. All of these must be separated from the true when the Son of man comes into the in- dividual consciousness of the glory of the Father. The real man is the spiritual man, the I am , and when he comes into dominion a great judgment work, a great day of sifting and separation, goes on in the mind and body and in the outer world of the one in whom this great quickening, renewing Christ-mind works. The natural man is in a constant whirl- pool of “Yes and No.” This is not domin- ion, and it is not true of the real man. He discerns the real from the unreal, the true from the false, and by his word of author- ity separates the sheep from the goats. The sheep are the meek, obedient, kind, tender, true thoughts. They are intelli- gent. In Oriental countries, where sheep are cared for by shepherds who love them, they show remarkable intelligence. The Lamb that “taketh away the sin of the world” is loving, intelligent, obedient to the Divine Law that saves men from sin arid the results of broken law. Sin is always followed by suffering, the “hell of fire,” unless you know the Law and identify yourself with the Christ and his righteousness and thus separate your- self from sin. If you get angry your blood will boil; you will cook the corpuscles of your blood and a fever will be set up. So with every departure from the law of love, a condition comes that men have named “disease.” But there is no reality in the diseases that are described in the medical books, and no remedy can be found for them in the realm of materiality. They are all the outpicturing of error thoughts,

THE LAST JUDGMENTE x trac ts from C harles F illm ore’s S un

day m orning ta lk in U nity A uditorium , October 16, 1910 (T e x t, M att. 25 ).

Jesus ta u g h t th a t the re is a power in m an which gives him au thority over the th ings of the w orld. T his P rinc ip le is the H ig h er Self, the S p iritu a l M an, the C hrist. I f we would succeed we m ust b ring fo rth th is P rinc ip le . I t gives dominion and m aste ry .

T he descrip tion of the last judgm en t given in the Gospels has been used to te rr ify men and women and thus compel them to un ite w ith the church ; but in th is day of enlightenm ent people are no t so easily led or d riven by fear. T hey ask for un derstanding . W hen they do seek ligh t concerning the judgm en t it is given, and they learn th a t it is a ll a m atte r of L aw — the very law of Being. T hey find th a t for every d ep a rtu re from th is Law they m ust su ffer, not in some fu tu re tim e of g rea t tr ib ulation , not in a g rea t ju d g m en t a f te r death , b u t here and now.

W hat is the Law ? I t is th a t universal som ething in us o f which we are all conscious, th a t te lls us when we are doing rig h t and when we are doing w rong. I t m ay be defined as th e innate know ing of r ig h t and wrong, and th is know ing m ay be quickened, cultivated. T his quickening does not come by the study of m ateria l th ings, bu t by concentra ting the m ind upon the H igher Pow er, the C hrist w ithin.

T his b rings us to the realization of w hat Jesus m eant when he said, “ T he Son of man shall come in his g lory and shall set the sheep on his rig h t hand , b u t the goats on his le f t .” T he Son of m an is the D ivine P ow er in man. I t is th a t in us which knows. T he Son of m an is not, fa r away, and his “angels” a re w ith him . A ngels

are the tru e concepts o f the Absolute. E v ery m an has w ith in him the sheep and the goats. T he goats a re thoughts of opposition, resistance, stubbornness. A ll of these m ust be separated from the true when the Son of m an comes into the individual consciousness of the glory of the F a th e r. T he rea l m an is the sp iritual m an, th e I a m , and when he comes into dom inion a g rea t ju d g m en t work, a great day of s if tin g and separation , goes on in the m ind and body and in the outer world of the one in whom this g rea t quickening, renew ing C hrist-m ind works.

T he n a tu ra l m an is in a constant w hirlpool of “Yes and N o.” T his is not dominion, and it is not tru e of the rea l man. H e discerns the rea l from the unrea l, the true from the false , and by his w ord of authority separates the sheep from the goats. T h e sheep are the meek, obedient, kind, tender, tru e thoughts. T hey are in telligent. In O rien ta l countries, where sheep are cared for by shepherds who love them, they show rem arkable intelligence. The Lam b th a t “ take th aw ay the sin of the w orld” is loving, in te lligen t, obedient to the D ivine Law th a t saves men from sin arid the resu lts of broken law.

S in is alw ays followed by suffering, the “hell of fire,” unless you know the Law and iden tify yourself w ith the C hrist and his righteousness and thus separate yourself from sin. I f you get angry your blood w ill bo il; you w ill cook the corpuscles of your blood and a fever w ill be set up. So w ith every d ep a rtu re from the law of love, a condition comes th a t men have named “disease.” B u t the re is no rea lity in the diseases th a t are described in the medical books, and no rem edy can be found for them in the realm of m ateria lity . T hey are a ll the outp ic turing of e rro r thoughts,

T he g rea test j oy of life is service. M any th ink it is in getting th ings, but are always d isappointed. I t is the people who forget themselves th a t bless the w orld w ith the ir presence. Selfishness leads to fau lt-finding and com plaining and scolding. Consideration of o thers’ w elfare and forgetfulness of se lf make sunshiny people. They have the secret of happiness and sa tisfaction. I f you a re cross and irritab le you m ay know th a t it is because you are allowing selfishness to ru le in you. You w ant w hat you w ant, and when you get it you w ill not be satisfied. L a te r you will w ant som ething else ju s t as much. Do not allow this goat to dom inate you. You will be most unhappy if you do, and the longer you perm it it the m ore unhappy you w ill become.

A story is told of a rich woman of un certain tem per who dream ed she w ent to heaven and was being shown about the place. A large m ansion a ttrac ted her a ttention and she asked for whom it was built. She was much su rp rised to learn th a t it was for her gardener. “W hy,” she said, “he never saves; he is most im provident.” A little cabin near by seemed to her more suitable for him , but she was told th a t the cabin was for her. She was ind ignant and said, “W hy, I live in a m ansion down there .” To which the a tten d an t replied, “C an’t help it, m ad am ; we are doing the very best we can w ith the m ateria l th a t is being sent up .”

“ The kingdom of heaven is w ithin you.” L ay up w ithin, treasu res of love and wisdom and righteousness.
