Sudlersville Elementary School Celebrates Unity Day

On Wednesday, October 7, 2015, Queen Anne's County Public School students celebrated Unity Day. This is a day to speak out about "No Bullying". Students showed their spirit throughout the week by wearing colored t-shirts. Dr. Jay Banks , inspirational speaker from Nashville, TN also spoke to students about showing respect for themselves and others. Additionally, the specialists and the principal took the opportunity to read to classes an anti-bullying-themed story. This was followed up by a brief discussion. On Monday, October 5th, the SES Eagles demonstrated their spirit by wearing orange. The students at SES are pictured joining hands as they celebrate respect for one another. SES also received the state-wide Character Counts Award. Congratulations to students and staff at SES!

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

The Sudlersville community celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month. Students and parents from both Sudlersville Elementary School and Sudlersville Middle School attended a celebration dinner on Friday, October 23rd. Students at each grade level created art work for the celebration. The staff also enjoyed festive attire for the celebration.

Summer Reading and Math Program

Students at Sudlersville Elementary School chose to stay active with reading and math during the summer by participating the "Summer Reading and Math Fun"

at SES. Students completed the TENMARK Math Program and were recognized for meeting their goals in math. Students who were engaged in reading this

summer and met their goal were recognized.

Students who participated received a free book, attended an ice-cream social, and received an Eagle

buck.

Color Fun Run/Walk Event

On Friday, October 9th, students and parents from both Sudlersville Elementary School and Sudlersville Middle School participated in their first My Color Run/Walk Event. Mrs. Jeanette Settelmaier organized the event to further support SES's PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) program. The My Color Run/Walk Event featured a 2.5 mile route. Throughout the course participants experienced color splash zones where they were doused in color. This event was fun for all!

It has been a busy two months in Pre-K. We would like to thank all of our parents who were able to be chaperones on our walking field trip to the Sudlersville Fire Department. The children enjoyed meeting Sparky, seeing the fire trucks, and learning about fire safety.

In addition, thanks to everyone for all their wonderful help with our Nursery Rhyme Day.This event was a huge success. The kids looked awesome in their costumes and did a great job reciting their Nursery Rhyme.

We are at the end of our theme “My Family and Friends”. Our next theme in Pre-K will be titled “Giants”. The children will be exploring manmade big things, imaginary big things, and nature-made big things.

On Friday, November 20th, we will be having our annual Thanksgiving Feast and Grandparents Day. Please be on the lookout regarding this special event.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, Nov.19th, Monday, November 23rd and 24th for Pre-K. We look forward to meeting and sharing samples of your child’s work with you during the conference.

We have recently completed our first unit in our new reading series. The words we are working on, from this unit, are: I, can, the, we, see, a and like. These are words that your child needs to practice reading and writing. The Wednesday Homework has been using these words. You can also look for these words when reading with your child. Remember that reading logs are due at the end of November. If you have misplaced your child's reading log, contact your child's teacher for a new reading log. The first month of homework has gone well. Remember that the homework is to help your child practice topics that have been taught in school. Ask your child questions about the topics on the homework and help him/her complete the homework with as much independence as possible. Thank you, The Kindergarten Team

The Pre-K Team

It's hard to believe it's already November. We want to thank all the wonderful chaperones that attended our field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo. I think everyone would agree that it was a fantastic day. This trip fit so nicely into our science units about animals and how they meet their needs in their habitats. We will continue to learn about animals and their life cycles. In math we are continuing to learn many different strategies to help us with our addition facts. Continue to practice them at home. In reading, the children have been reading about what makes us special, what makes pets special, and what things friends like to do together. Ask them to tell you about some of the stories we have read.

Please, please, please continue to read at home. Their first reading log should have been completed and turned in for the month of October. If you haven't received a new log for November, please contact your child's teacher. Thank you for your continued support.

Friends: Fourth graders are building friendships. They are doing a great job of working together during recess. Speaking of recess, it is starting to get colder please remember to send your child with a coat.

Assessments: Testing is an important part of your child's success. We as teachers are working to limited the testing hours so that we can spend more time teaching. These assessments help us to understand where your child is and how we can help him/her grow as learners.

Lessons: We are working with our new McGraw Hill Reading series. The new stories are great to help teach students important skills with fiction and non-fiction texts. In Math we are continuing to push through multiplication. Please practice basic facts at home. In Science we will be studying rock cycles and in Social Studies we will begin a study of Colonial Maryland.

November has lots in store for second grade. We will be finishing our introductory science unit, learning place value in math, work hard in reading and continue to improve on our writing skills. Our grade will be doing a Thanksgiving Feast on Friday, November 20th. There will be a planning meeting on Wednesday Nov. 11th at 10:30am if you are interested in helping out. Please look for more information coming home soon.Very cold weather will soon be on its way. Please make sure your child is prepared for outdoor recess with a warm jacket, hats and gloves (labeled with names).Each second grade teacher is teaching small groups in reading each day. Ask your child about what they are reading!Many of our students have had great attendance so far this year. Kudos to them! If your child does need to miss school, please look for makeup work in the H.W. folder and send it back when complete.By the way, our field trip to the Natural History Museum in October was fantastic. The students had many great experiences and learned a lot! Thank you to all our chaperones!Each day in November will be especially packed with learning since it is a “short” month. “Fabulous Fall” Welcome to the third month of school! November is going to be a busy month. Just a reminder that we will have a half day on Friday, November 6th, 2015. November 16th begins “American Education Week 2015!” Grandparents Day will be on Friday, November 20th, 2015. Please make sure to turn in a lunch slip if you or a grandparent plan on eating lunch with your child. Please mark your calendars- the third grade will be taking a field trip to the Md. Science Center in Baltimore on Monday, December 21st, 2015. The permission slips will be handed out at the parent conferences.Multiplication has been introduced to your child and an important component to this skill is practicing the math facts with your child. Multiplication flashcards can be found in many dollar stores for purchase. Children are expected to have these multiplication facts mastered by fourth grade so any practice that can be completed at home would be very helpful. Please make sure that your child continues to read and complete the “opinion” paragraph writing in the Reading Homework notebook. Opinion writing is a

large focus of instruction this year as it is a large component of the common core curriculum! We look forward to seeing you at the parent conferences on Monday, November 21st as well as Tuesday, November 22nd, 2015. In closing from our family to yours we wish you a “Happy Thanksgiving.”

Lots to do: Grandparents day is coming up. We welcome all parents and family members to visit that week. (See the posted schedule). The holidays are just around the coroner. We will have a holiday celebration at the end of December. Lastly, our next field trip is scheduled for December 18th to the Baltimore Aquarium. Look for field trip forms soon.

Winter Concert performers include the 2nd grade classes, the Winter Chorus (3rd & 4th grade students), and the Winter Recorder Club (4th grade students).2nd Grade Classes:2nd Grade classes will begin working on concert music in November. A letter will go home with important concert info at the beginning of November. There will be a part at the bottom of the letter to fill out and return.

form before rehearsals begin.The Winter Chorus is open to all 3rd & 4th grade students who would like to sing and perform in the Winter Concert. The permission form must be returned in order to participate. Winter Recorder Club (4th Grade Only):Letters have been sent home. Space for this group is limited and we are almost full! We will begin working on our concert music in November. There is still time to bring in the permission form before rehearsals begin.

Parent InvolvementWe would like to thank all the

parents and guardians who attended our Title I Night on October 1, 2015. Title I Night was full of important information, and we are glad that you are now an informed parent about what is happening at SES. Also, thank you to those awesome fathers that came to the WATCH D.O.G.S. Kick-off Session on October 1, 2015. Mr. Jaime Voshell shared some wonderful experiences as a WATCH D.O.G.S. Dad at SES! If you were not able to attend the WATCH D.O.G.S. Kick- off session, and you are interested please contact us! There are some exciting family events planned for the upcoming months, and we would like to have you be part of the planning. Our next PAC meeting will be on November 17, 2015 at 8:30 am in the cafeteria. Please join us!

The parent compact should be returned to school with your signature, and if your student is in 3rd or 4th grade he/she also has to sign it. Fever FactsA fever is considered an increase in body temperature above normal. It is usually the body’s controlled reaction to a virus or bacteria. Studies have shown that a fever can slow down viral and bacterial activity and help the body heal itself. Normal body temperature is 98.6F but it is normal for one’s body temperature to fluctuate a little during the day.In Queen Anne’s County we send children home if they have a temperature of 100’F or above. Students must be “fever free for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medication”, in order to return to school.Most fevers are not dangerous but if your child has a chronic illness or disease you should notify your doctor.Seek medical attention right away if your child has a fever and:under 3 months of agefussy or miserablevomiting and or diarrhea and is not drinking very muchdrowsy, listless and looks sicka rasha stiff neckin painhas trouble breathingsunken eyes, dry mouth and lipsnot urinatingAlso contact your doctor if your child has had a fever more than 2 days.

You can make your child more comfortable by keeping them in dry comfortable clothing. Offer

Due to the manufacturers delay in the delivery of FluMistÒ, ALL clinics for school aged children currently scheduled have been POSTPONED until December. At this time the QAC Department of Health has NO FluMistÒ available. We anticipate having an ample supply of FluMistÒ in early December and will be able to come out to the schools to administer vaccine to the children.Parents will not need to re-submit any paperwork for their child. However if a child is vaccinated prior to the School FluMistÒ clinic we ask that parents notify the nurse at their school to let them know they have received flu vaccine for this year. (Nurses will need to pull those forms so children will not get vaccinated twice)

Reye syndrome is a very serious disease some people develop as they are getting over a viral illness such as the flu or chickenpox.Parents you know your children. The SES Safety Patrol is on the job! 4th Graders Gustavo Escudero Rosas, Alexis Crabill, Kaleb Tribbitt, Cidney Tribbitt, MaCaelah Huffer, Keegan Cardoza, David Ramirez Chun, Kaiden Minnick, Taylor Thren, Nathan Johnston, Darby Skinner, Sara Reny, and Joshua Kunes are at their posts each morning helping to keep our entryways and hallways safe and respectful. If a Patrol member witnesses a student running, pushing past others, or engaging in any behavior that does not meet our SOAR hallway expectations; they will give the student a verbal reminder about our expected behavior and/or speak to the student’s Teacher about the behavior.

Character Counts! Coaches wanted! Are you looking for a fun, meaningful way to becomemore regularly involved with the amazing students at SES this year? Consider becoming a Character Coach! Coaches deliver a brief (usually 15-minute) lesson to a class of students once a week based upon the Character Pillar of the Month. Training, resources, and support is provided. Teams of two are also welcome! For more information, please contact Nicole Conner. Coaches are currently needed at ALL grade levels. SES recently received a Maryland School of Character Award for our character education programming. Character Coaches

are a cornerstone of this important work, please consider getting involved! Unity Day 2015 and our “Rainbow of Unity” spirit week was a great success! At SES, we know that students’ emotional wellbeing goes hand-in-hand with academic success; so acts of interpersonal aggression, including bullying, are never tolerated. Students were excited to receive the special purple eagle bucks that were given out for acts of kindness and inclusion teachers witnessed throughout the week. Members of the leadership team enjoyed reading stories to our students about getting along and valuing one another’s differences; and everyone enjoyed the funny and informative anti-bullying assembly with Dr. Jay Banks who taught us to be UN-AFRAID (Avoid bullies, Find a Friend, Report bullying, Act confident and make this new confident personality your Identity).

Math Matters

Hello everyone! I can’t stress enough the importance of students knowing basic math facts. Please practice basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts with your children. Make it fun, be creative! If you need some ideas on how to do this, see Ms. Kane or your child’s teacher.

Parent-Teacher conferences will be taking place on November 23 and 24. We are looking forward to meeting with parents to explain the new progress report and to share student work. Due to moving to trimester reporting this year, you will not receive the completed progress report until December. Here are a few parent tips to help make the conference a success:

Before the conference:

• Ask your child how he/she feels about school.• Ask your child if there is anything that he/she wants you to talk about with his/her teacher.• Prepare a list of questions.

During the conference:

• Be on time.• Ask the most important questions first.• Ask your child’s teacher for ways that you can help your child at home.• Ask for explanations of anything you don’t understand.

After the conference:

• Talk about the conference with your child.• Tell your child about any plans you and the teacher have created.• Keep in touch with the teacher during the school year.

1. Before carving a pumpkin, guess how many seeds are inside. Sort seeds by groups of 10 to figure the total amount. How close was your guess?

2. When you’re done trick or treating, ESTIMATE how many treats you have. Then COUNT to find out how close your estimate was. What is the difference between the two numbers. How close was your estimate?

3. Count how many houses you go to for trick or treating. Divide it by the total amount of treats to see the average number of treats each home have out.

The Judy Center Partnership of QAC was pleased to be a part of the Make a Difference Day held on Saturday, October 25th from 10 am to 3 pm at Sudlersville Middle School. We partnered with agencies and community organizations in the county to help meet the needs of individuals, who are homeless, or are at-risk for becoming homeless. The purpose of the day was to ensure individuals had access to many important county services, such as the Workforce Investment Van, dental services, haircutting services, shelter services, birth certificate services, Dept. of Motor Vehicles services, multiple services from the Queen Anne’s County Department of Social Services, energy assistance services, health services, immunizations, and much, much more.

The Judy Center Partnership of QAC joined forces with the Family Center of QAC to provide childcare, and activities for children, as their families navigated the many service stations set-up for the day. Books, and plush toys were given out to each child that attended with their families. A warm lunch, fruit, dessert, and drinks were offered to all families, volunteer navigators, and community agency staff members throughout the day.

Annette DiMaggio was responsible for the delicious lunch. Sudlersville Volunteer

Firefighter-Ladies Auxiliary, and Centreville United Methodist Church provided a variety of desserts for the group. Candace Darling of the Dept. of Housing, and Jone Mills Taylor, of the Queen Anne’s County Department of Social Services led the committee that coordinated the day. Judy Corchiarino, community volunteer provided logistics for vendors of service stations, and the organization of the event to provide a smoothly running event, and day.

The Judy Center continues to provide a twice weekly Judy Center Playgroup from 9:00 am – 10:30 am at Sudlersville Elementary School every Tuesday and Thursday. Join us and learn social skills strategies to utilize with your child, move to the music, listen to a story, and enjoy a snack and drink, as your child becomes more prepared for school success. Please follow our Facebook page to see what is happening at the Judy Center Playgroup.

And don’t forget, we are now providing early childhood enrichment home visits for young children in the community, and

for children experiencing challenges in Pre-K or Kindergarten. We are also working on plans for an upcoming “Meet and Greet” scheduled for local childcare providers to help them stay informed about the latest best practices to be used in their childcare setting. Please follow our Facebook page for dates.

In November, during American Education week, join us during the Pre-K and Kindergarten Social Emotional Foundations of Early Learning (SEFEL) showcase. Ms. Lori Yarbrough will teach Pre-K and K children a SEFEL based performance to be presented for parents and grandparents during American Education week.

Last but not least, we are continuing to enroll children in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library at no charge to a family. All expenses are paid for by the Judy Center Partnership of QAC through donations received from generous donors in the county. Enrollment in the DPIL will enable a child to receive a free age-appropriate book, each month, until they reach the age of five years old.
