DESCRIPTION

Each year we visit several leading trade fairs and exhibitions in order to identify the latest fashion and design trends. These include the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, the largest design exhibition in the world. This exhibition is a key source of inspiration for us and gives our customers information about relevant trends. Not only do we present the most important information and trends in a trend report, we also apply them to individual customers by producing customer-specific examples and ideas. Find out how our services can support and bring inspiration to your activities, and download a preview of our Milan 2013 trend report.

SALONE DEL MOBILE 2013

FOREWORD

Each year, a delegation from Van der Veer Designers visits the furniture exhibition in Milan. Normally, we draw up a written report and produce a number of collages and ban-ners in order to present our findings. This year, we have gone a step further by incorporating the inspiration gained at this exhibition in two 3-D walls. Our own designs and other familiar forms, which we have re-styled by incorporating the inspiring colours, coatings and materials that we encountered in Milan.

This unorthodox approach has led to a novel, surprising and inspiring play of shapes that can be translated in turn into new concepts and designs.

The exhibition in Milan was once again a source of creative inspiration. Many young designers and famous brands unveil their new collections at this exhibition first. As in previous years, Dutch designers were strongly represented. MOOOI, the Dutch label where Marcel Wanders is art director and co-founder, was almost the only brand that was adventurous enough to put on a major, impressive display in the city.

The exhibition in Milan has focused strongly on craftsmanship and production processes for many years and that resulted once again in some attractive and surprising designs this year. Sustainability and natural materials were also very popular.

The Asian continent is an increasingly prolific producer of talented young designers. They show a preference for wood and porcelain, often in combination with age-old crafting techniques.

All in all, Milan is an inspiring setting from which we always return bursting with ideas and energy!

COLOURNEON TINTS, PASTELS AND GREENThe use of pastel tints has emerged from the trend stage and has now been broadly adopted by the public at large.Feminine tints such as violet, mint, soft blue, lemon or sorbet were previously commonly used as accents, but are now also used for statement objects such as chairs and couches, often in combination with adventurous colour transitions and tropical tints.

*For example:

Wood Bikini Chair designed by Werner Aisslinger for the Italian Moroso brand catches the eye with its use of neon colour transitions and fashionable pastels.

GRAPHICALLYDARING MOTIFS GREENLarge graphic flower patterns and striking geometric im-prints on rugs, chairs, table tops and wall coverings could be seen everywhere in Milan, and they are becoming increas-ingly audacious. Both in terms of the graphics and colour. Here again, we saw numerous neon accents!

*For example:

El Santo Libre a simply contoured leather chair with larger-than-life classical patterns. Designed by Christophe de la Fontaine for Dante Goods & Bads.

MATERIAL COMBINATIONSSUBTLE TRANSITIONSCombining different materials creates subtle transitions and a layered structure in products and can often lead to surprising results in terms of colour and texture.

*For example:

Concrete by Renate Vos Lamps made from concrete and silicone rubber. The use of these two materials in the lamp creates a warm light that contrasts with the bold and simple shape and concrete material.

INTERIOR/EXTERIORNATURAL INFLUENCESThe influence of nature was very strong in Milan this year. The outside was brought inside and the inside taken outside. Throughout the Milan exhibition, the colour green was almost ubiquitously evident in the form of(hanging) plants, living walls and botanical gardens. Large plants will assume an important role in open spaces in the future. The divid-ing line between furniture for the interior and exterior is becoming increasingly blurred.

*For example:

The botanic Bucket Light by Roderick Vos was inspired by his desire to bring cleaner air into his studio.

TRENDWATCHING

WHAT IS TREND WATCHING?You regularly read articles in magazines and elsewhere about the likely make-up of your future target groups and the developments that the future will bring. These interpretations of the future are commonly referred to as ‘trend watching’.Trend watching is not predicting the future but recognising and spotlighting new developments at a very early stage. In order to interpret a trend properly, it has to be ana-lysed and placed in the right context.

WHAT ARE TRENDS?Trends are social and cultural developments. Trends exist at various levels. For example: the process of individualisation in our society has passed its peak and a trend towards group empathy and a selfless readiness to offer help can be expected in the years to come. This “new” group empathy evokes enthusiasm and a feeling of social ac-knowledgment in many people. So this seems to be the core of a new social macro trend. This macro trend will give rise to a multitude of smaller mini trends, which will lead in turn to a huge diversity of micro trends.

HOW CAN YOU BENEFIT?Trend watching is detecting, documenting and studying new devel-opments in society and culture, and in our case focuses on develop-ments in design (even though you cannot look at one in isolation from the other). Detecting, registering, documenting and explaining new trends can be instrumental in starting up new innovation projects and creating better opportunities for products.

A good understanding of relevant trends is key to conceiving future strategies. The trend reports generated by Van der Veer Designers are tailored to the needs of each individual customer and based on continuous research.
