What is VoIP?

VoIP is the Voice over Internet Protocol.

What is VoIP?

• The Voice over Internet Protocol enables you to use your IP network to make phone calls.

• However, it is not just used for phone calls, it is used for general voice communications over

the internet.

Page 4: Voipppt

How does VoIP work?

• VoIP works differently to ordinary telephone communications.

• This is because the traditional way of making telephone call utilises something called circuit

switching.• Instead of circuit switching, VoIP converts your

voice into little packets of data and then they travel on a route of several routers, to reach

their destination.

Who uses VoIP?• VoIP is beginning to be used in a lot of

business. This is because it is considered cheap.

• Microsoft is using VoIP for their ‘Xbox’ live service. Enabling customers to be able to talk through a headset to each other. However, they do charge a small fee for the service.

• Skype also use VoIP. Skype is used by 20% of American businesses.

Disadvantages of VoIP• There is one factor that is preventing VoIP

from really taking off. This is the fact that it is less reliable than the traditional switched circuit method of telephone communications.

• This is because some parts of the packet, that the voice is sent in can be lost.

• Resulting in a small bit of jittering and low sound quality.
