What is an Otolaryngologi
st?
ENT physicians are specialists in the treatment of the ear, nose, and
throat; diseases and disorders of the
head and neck.
ENTs diagnose, treat, and manage issues related to the ears,
nose, sinuses, voice box, mouth, throat, and other neck and facial
structures.
ENTs complete both medical and surgical
treatment of a variety of ear disorders,
including: hearing loss, ear infections, tinnitus,
vestibular disorders, congenital disorders of the ear, and ear-related
nerve disorders.
Non-medical hearing and vestibular
management is typically
completed by audiologists.
Nasal maladies related to sinuses, allergies, polyps,
deviated septums, cosmetic issues, and
other disorders related to the sense
of smell may be treated by your ENT.
Disorders of the throat, affecting speech, singing, breathing, and
swallowing may be diagnosed and
managed.
Other related head and neck disorders may also fall within the scope of an ENT. Some ENTs may even
perform cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeries.
ENTs are intensely trained for 13-15
years of bachelors and post-graduate
education, including college, medical school,
and at minimum 5 years of specialty
training.
