    (a) Determina.tion of Bomb Load:*1. The 58th Wing, which wa.s assigned mean

    point of impact 096072, was originally scheduled to carry E 48 incen-diary clusters, However, due to the lack of' surveillance on theseclusters. it become necessary to change tho load to clusters of M59bombs, futed to open 5000 feet above the tar got.

    1. The 73rd Wing was o.ssigned 2 mean pointsof impact with 2 groups ec hedu I ad to a:tte.ck euc h poi nt. Of the 2groups assigned to stri1!:e mean point of impact 123060, I g-roup Wo.5to carry AN-M47A2incendiary bombs while: bhe other group was to carryclusters of M69 bombs. The 2 groups scheduled to strike mean pointof :imp(lct 079053 were originally dcsigno.ted 0. bomb lond of E48 clus-ters but this WaS changed to clusters of M69 bombs because of theb,clC of surveillance on the E48 type. The !l.K-M47A2bOl:ilbswere I'uze dinBt~ntaneous nose while the clusters of M69 bombs were fused to open5000 feet above the target.

    .!. The 314th Wing was Ilssigned mean point ofimpact 069082 and scheduled to carry the Garno bomb load. under t h esrune conditions, as the 313th Wing

    .2. The combinution of t,147 incendi!lrY bombs andclusters of M69 bombs had been employed very successfully i n previousattacks en mixed industrifl.l and urban ar eus , It vms expected thatthi IS effort would p I nee a ground dens i ty of 200 to 225 tons of bombspe r SqUD.1'6 mile on the to,r get area.

    (b ) _ _ B omM ng .D n i:: .n ..:1. The factors instrUI:'lental in the decision

    to use an axis of attack of a.pproximately 6,1 degrees ware: n distin-g~ishable initial point easily recognizable by both bombers an d fighterescort; a predicted surface wind that would kc op the JneIl1l points ofimpact clear of smoke for all attacking formutionsj a small a m o u n t ofdrift; an d a m1nim~m amount of antiaircraft opposition.

    _ g . The 5 mean points of impD.ct were selectedso that the probable circular error of 1.1000feat for each would coverall of' the important are as in the city

    .2. The timing control for the Wi11f!;swas 10arranged that all groups would bomb wi th1n 4 nt1nutes 01 : ea.ch othel',a n d all squadrons within 1 minute of each other. It was expected

    .2. Ai rcraft carry1ng the Y47 A2 bombs were tobe instructed to fly a flat forma.tion in oroer to limit the 'P0ssibllityof this type bomb striking other aircra.ft flying in the, wing elementsof the forma.tion.

    (c) Yokohama waS considered to be un excellent radarto..rget due to its distinctive projection into Tokyo Bay. It was e x-pee bed that all 5 mean pOints of impact could be bombed by the synchro-nous radar-bombsight techniiiJ.ue and if visual conditions should exist.radar could be used to set up course. and range for the bombnrdier.

    (5) ReM:(a) Because o f the noticsQble improvement in th e
