October 15, 2017 ~ 28th Sunday of Ordinary Time Page 3

Dear Parishioners, This weekend we come together to celebrate the Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. As human beings, one of the things we all enjoy is a good party. We can look back in our lives and remember the good times that we had at various parties. Obviously, there are some gatherings that we find challenging, but isn’t that part of the experience of life? Hopefully, we learn and continue on with our lives. In our first reading, Isaiah uses the motif of a party to challenge the Israelites. They are going through some hard times. The Babylonians are assaulting the walls of Jerusalem. Perhaps they are saying, “Woe are we, for the Lord has abandoned us!” Isaiah challenges this understanding using the motif of a lavish gathering on “the mountain”. God will gather and reach out to them again. God will provide “rich food…” and “wipe away the tears”. On that special day, God will again save them and enable them to rejoice. Matthew again presents Jesus speaking to the leaders of the people. Time and time again, Jesus has reached out to the leaders. Time and time again, the leaders have refused to listen. Matthew, most likely, was challenging the early Jewish Christians. Most likely these early Jewish Christians had accepted Jesus’ message, become part of the Church (been baptized), and then, shall we say, “rested on their laurels”. Jesus uses the image of the wedding feast to challenge them. Where are we in this gathering? Have we accepted Jesus, and then chosen not to respond? Have we accepted Jesus, and then chosen to find all kinds of excuses? Have we accepted Jesus, and then chosen to not follow through? Respectfully, UPCOMING EVENTS: Saturday, Oct. 14, 11:00 Mass and Dedication of Our Lady of Fatima Shrine by the Most Reverend Michael J. Bransfield, Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston. Monday-Friday, Oct. 16-20, the second of two Diocesan Presbyters (Priest Retreats), Bishop Hodges Pastoral Center, Huttonsville WV. Fr. Escalante will be on this retreat. Monday, Oct. 16, 7:00 pm Finance Council, Conference Room. Tuesday, Oct. 17, 10:00 am, Jefferson Community Ministries Board, JCCM Building. Wed., Oct. 25 10:00 am Continuing Education Workshop for Diocesan Presbyters (Priests) at Saint Francis de Sales, Morgantown.

304-725-5558 Around Our Parish

The traditions of our faith stir strong memories for many of us. Memories of family celebrations for baptisms and First Communions, the beauty of a marriage Mass, and the comfort of our sacrament for the sick and dying. We can bring others into our celebrations so they too can experience the joy of our faith. How do we

share the richness of our heritage with our friends, the youth in our lives, or our neighbors? Father Connors, Tony’s parish priest in New Jersey, had a strong devotion to Our Lady of Fátima and he shared it with the entire parish. A seed was planted. Alfred and Barbara Braddock embraced their faith and shared their love of Christ with their sons Francis and Tony. Another seed was planted. His family built a shrine to Our Lady of Fátima in their backyard. And another seed was planted. Like each of us, Tony’s journey was blessed with many sowers and the seeds took root. It’s amazing to think the child who knelt at this backyard shrine would one day bring the beautiful Our Lady of Fátima Garden to our parish and create sanctuary where the message of Fátima will be shared with thousands in the years to come. Where will you plant a seed this week?

Now Accepting Donations!

Our convoy is headed to Texas and Florida with needed supplies. We want to load the semi-trucks to capacity so we’re collecting and ordering full, boxed cases of non-perishable food to fill the trucks. Here’s how you can help:

Caring for Creation—Laudato Sí In partnership with the Cacapon Institute CommuniTree project, members of our AHG and TLUSA troops continued in their Caring for Creation activities. Thanks to their generosity with their time, talent, and muscles, they planted trees around the playground and parking areas. If you’re curious to know what types of trees were planted, just look for the cool labeling at the base of each tree. Our youth used their creativity and some local rocks for a new labeling system!

Annual Tootsie Roll Drive Gabby, Brainna & Rebecca collected donations for the Knights of Columbus annual Tootsie Roll Drive to raise funds for mentally disabled children and adults.

JOINING OUR PARISH and becoming a part of our parish family is easy and rewarding. Registration forms can be found in the Narthex or Parish Office. Once a registration form is submitted, new parishioners will receive a welcome packet and an invitation to learn more about St. James and meet some of your new family members. Get connected, get involved, register today. If you move, kindly let us know. BECOMING CATHOLIC at St. James begins with a religious education process called RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Through RCIA, people learn about the Catholic Faith and prepare to become full members of our Catholic family. This process is also available for children and teens. CATHOLICS RETURNING HOME is a program that provides a warm welcome to all desiring to return to the Catholic Church. Voice your concerns and get answers to your questions. Contact Linda Bryan at returnhome@stjameswv. org. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION As adults, our second most important job is raising our children in our Catholic faith. (Our most important job, of course, is maintaining our own relationship with our Heavenly Father.) Families registered in our parish may enroll their children in religious education as early as the age of three. Contact the Allie Enos at [email protected]. Check the bulletin for postings of adult faith formation classes. They are offered on a regular basis and will be listed in the bulletin. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM is the first sacrament by which we receive a new and spiritual life and the dignity of adoption as children of God and heirs of God's kingdom. Registered families may celebrate this sacrament at St. James after attending one of the Baptism classes offered the last Sunday of each month at 1 pm. Register for the class with the parish office before the birth of your baby. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE celebrates a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. If you are a registered, active member of the parish considering this vocation, you must meet with Carol Dindinger at least six months before your desired wedding date. No date will be set prior to that meeting. To begin this process, contact Carol at [email protected] or the parish office. SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction, is a ritual of healing. Should you or a family member be entering the hospital, preparing for surgery, or nearing death, contact the Parish Office. THE HISTORIC CHAPEL OF ST. PETER in Harpers Ferry celebrates a “Tourist” Mass on Sundays at 11:00 am. The Chapel is also open to visitors on weekends from 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm most weekends from May through October.
