ABOUT MARRIAGE

INTRODUCTION

• Marriage is a social union or legal contract between people that creates kinship. It is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged in a variety of ways, depending on the culture or subculture in which it is found. Such a union, often formalized via a wedding ceremony, may also be called matrimony.

• People marry for many reasons, including one or more of the following: legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual, and religious.

• These might include arranged marriages, family obligations, the legal establishment of a nuclear family unit, the legal protection of children and public declaration of commitment.[1][2] The act of marriage usually creates normative or legal obligations between the individuals involved. In some societies these obligations also extend to certain family members of the married persons. VALUES

• Marriage is usually recognized by the state, a religious authority, or both. It is often viewed as a contract. Civil marriage is the legal concept of marriage as a governmental institution irrespective of religious affiliation, in accordance with marriage laws of the jurisdiction. If recognized by the state, by the religion(s) to which the parties belong or by society in general, the act of marriage changes the personal and social status of the individuals who enter into it.

WHAT DID GOD STABLISH ABOUT MARRIAGE?

• Jewish tradition ascribes to Moses the authorship of Genesis and the four books that follow. The set of these books are called Pentateuch.

• Traditionally is accepted that the exodus from Egypt occurred in the mid-fifteenth century BC, in 1440.

A SHORT SUMMARY

2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. (Genesis 2)

THE LORD GOD FORMED A MAN

7 Then the LORD God formed a man[c] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. (Genesis 2:8)

9 The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were

the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,

for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” (Gensesis 2:15-17)

Genesis 2:18-20

• 18 The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

• 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. ; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. (Genesis 2:12-20

21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[g] and then closed up the place

with flesh. (Genesis 2:21)

22Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib[h] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. (Genesis 2:22)

23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” (Genesis 2:23)

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)

Deuteronomy 24:5

• 5 If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married.

DIVORCE (PART II)

DIVORCE• Divorce (or the dissolution of 

marriage) is the final termination of a marital union, canceling the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage and dissolving the bonds of matrimony between the parties. In most countries divorce requires the sanction of a court or other authority in a legal process. The legal process for divorce may also involve issues of spousal support, child custody, child support, distribution of property and division of debt.

DIVORCE• In most Western countries, a

divorce does not declare a marriage null and void, as in an annulment, but it does cancel the married status of the parties. Where monogamy is law, this allows each former partner to marry another. Where polygyny is legal, divorce allows the woman to marry another. Divorce laws vary considerably around the world. Divorce is not permitted in some countries, such as in Malta and in the Philippines, though an annulment is permitted.

DIVORCE/ ADULTERY • 1 If a man marries a woman who becomes

displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, 2 and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, 3 and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, 4 then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance. (Deuteronomy 24:1-5)

GOSPEL ACCOURDING TO MATTHEW

• The Gospel of Matthew was written between 50 to 75 After CHRIST. Matthew presents Jesus as the fulfillment of all messianic hopes and expectations.

• Matthew carefully structure their accounts to show that Jesus fulfilled certain prophecies.

Mathew 19:1-10

• 1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. 2 Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. 3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”

• 4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’[a] 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’[b]? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

•  7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”

“your hearts were hard..”• 8 Jesus replied, “Moses 

permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

• 10 The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.”

• 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[e

] 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

SOME DEFINITIONS

• Anthropologists have proposed several competing definitions of marriage so as to encompass the wide variety of marital practices observed across cultures.[4] In his book The History of Human Marriage (1921), Edvard Westermarck defined marriage as "a more or less durable connection between male and female lasting beyond the mere act of propagation till after the birth of the offspring."

NUCLEAR MARRIAGE (One man and one woman, both of them are adults )

• The anthropological handbook Notes and Queries (1951) defined marriage as "a union between a man and a woman such that children born to the woman are the recognized legitimate offspring of both partners."

Same-sex marriage

• Various types of same-sex marriages have existed,[34] ranging from informal, unsanctioned relationships to highly ritualized unions.[35]

• While it is a relatively new practice that same-sex couples are being granted the same form of legal marital recognition as commonly used by mixed-sex couples, recent publicity and debate over the past decade gives an impression that civil marriage for lesbian and gay couples is novel and untested.

Same sex marriage.

• There is a long history of recorded same-sex unions around the world.[36] It is believed that same-sex unions were celebrated in Ancient Greece and Rome,[36] some regions of China, such as Fujian, and at certain times in ancient European history.[37] A law in the Theodosian Code (C. Th. 9.7.3) issued in 342 CE imposed severe penalties or death on same-sex marriage in ancient Rome[38] but the exact intent of the law and its relation to social practice is unclear, as only a few examples of same-sex marriage in that culture exist.[39]

POLYGYNY• Polygamy (from πολύς

γάμος polys gamos, translated literally in Late Greek as "often married"[1]) is a marriage which includes more than two partners.[1] When a man is married to more than one wife at a time, the relationship is called polygyny, and there is no marriage bond between the wives

POLYANDRY

• When a woman is married to more than one husband at a time, it is called polyandry, and there is no marriage bond between the husbands.

CONCLUSIONS

• If everybody wants to be happy in marriage:• Get marry one adult man with one adult woman,• Take care each other; Give love, respect, loyalty each other.• Be honest each other, don´t commit adultery, don´t say lies.• Take care with love their sons.• If the husband or the wife fall in love for another person, talk

with honesty about this, before to commit adultery. Tray to resolve together this situation before to decide to get the divorce. Think in their sons.
