Before the internet came along and changed our lives forever, the first impression a buyer got of your home was generally from the front gate during the obligatory “drive-by”. An advert may appear in the newspaper or the real estate agent would call their list of qualified customers, and the customer would jump in their car to take a look. After this initial scan of the house from the street, the customer would then decide on whether they would like to view the property further. Street appeal was King.

The way your home presented from the roadside was critically important

as many potential buyers could rule themselves out simply because your rhododendrons were too bushy or they could see one of your fence palings was cracked. This sort of first impression could ruin the overall perception of the property, and even after a thorough inspection, the damage to its value has already been done.

Street appeal will always be an important factor when selling your home, but more often than not, the first impression comes from the internet listing. Quality photographic images of a well presented home is what buyers should be seeing. Photography is the new King!

Today’s buyers are particularly savvy. They will do a lot of research and may view a hundred properties or more before making a purchase decision. The difference is, the majority of these “viewings” are done from the comfort of their own home or while they are at work – on the web! A prospective purchaser can take a tour of your home, inside and out. Then make a decision on whether it is worth a physical inspection and CLICK onto the next one within a couple of very short minutes.

If that seems brutal to you, then you will probably agree with me when I say that the photos of your property have to be the highest quality to

stand out and put your property at the top of the shortlist. We have all seen the photos of the agent who has captured their own reflection in the bathroom mirror and laughed. We have all hit the close window button after coming across the photo of the poorly lit kitchen that appears so small and poky, you wonder if it would be easier if you just ordered takeaways each night. Ensure your property is memorable for all of the right reasons!

So when your agent says to you, “Don’t worry, I will take the photos for you”, think about what they are really doing to your property. They may have good intentions, but do you think the buyers will be so kind? List with an agent that insists on quality. First impressions matter.

Many of us have old pieces of furniture in our

storage spaces, set to gather dust and be eaten

away by rodents! However, old drawers are currently the trendiest, cheapest way of adding your unique style to your home. 1 Make it into a mirror!Simply gather up the right sized

drawers, go to your local glass business and get them to cut to size. Stick it to the bottom of the drawer and you have a wonderful bathroom mirror complete with a handy shelf for all your items.

2 Stencilled shelvesDrawers are the perfect canvas for

all your creative expression. Why not cut out a stencil of something you like as a style – like the Eiffel Tower. Then paint the drawers the colour you want and sand them back if you want a retro look. Paint your

stencil over the top and place them on the wall in various positions. This can make a bold statement as well as being a stylish addition to your décor.

3 Puppy or kitty bedLong drawers make great lounging

space for your pets. Simply sew a squab for them – add a few pillows and you can enjoy watching your prized pets snoozing in something you have made!

4 Make a shabby chic chest of drawers

This is a wonderful way of completely changing a dated piece of furniture. All you have to do is find a chest of drawers, take most of the drawers out of it and layer it with all sorts of different shapes and sizes of drawers. You may need to add shelves to sit them on but use your imagination and a wide palette of colours and you will be thrilled with the result.

5 Funky shelvesIf you get that stenciling into gear

and grab unusual knobs to go on them you have the recipe for some very cool shelves. Simply paint the drawers to the colour you want, stencil the front or even wallpaper

them, add your knobs and attach them to the wall.

6 Rolling drawers for under the bed

Most of us have small spaces under our beds but often they are not big enough to fit a large container in – but never fear as drawers are the solution! Small enough to slide underneath and very handy if you just attach castor wheels under them. The ultimate in storage solutions. 1 4

If you’re after a little colour in your garden this spring, or a lot for that matter, look no further

than lovely alyssum. This dainty, fragrant plant flowers from early spring through to late autumn and produces a mass of pretty little flowers.

Its hardiness and compactness makes it great for growing in borders, edging and rock gardens. It’s also prefect for planting in containers, hanging baskets and pots because of its tendency to spill over the edges. What’s more, it’s super easy to grow.

Awapuni stocks two varieties of alyssum – white and wonderland mixed which is a combination of bright blues, purples and also white. Both grow to a height of about 20cm.

You can grab your alyssum seedlings from the online store at awapuni.co.nz or next time you’re at your local supermarket or Bunnings. And be sure to check out the new labels on our seedling bundles. Each bundle still contains the same great quality seedlings for the same great price, just with a smarter, brighter label that includes simple planting instructions.

Once you’ve got your plants, look for a spot in your garden that’s in full sun to semi-shade. Then plant each seedling around 20cm apart from the other.

If you’re growing alyssum in a hanging basket, because of its cascading nature, I recommend putting it around the sides. This will provide colour and soften the

edges of the basket. Lobelia also works nicely in this way. And you could top the basket with petunias and impatiens or, for something a bit different, add one of Awapuni’s cherry tomato and basil combos to the top.

In around six to eight weeks you’ll have a little, or a lot, of lovely alyssum colour to enjoy in your garden.

Designing your nursery - dare to be different

Decorating a room to become a baby nursery is an exciting time, but as many experienced

designers and real estate agents alike

will tell you, don’t go overboard on babying

every single thing in the room.

While you will want the area to be stimulating for the baby’s development, it also needs to be a calm environment for mum and dad, as during that all-important first year, you will be spending a lot of time in there, all hours of the day and night.

From a practical point of view, your wee bundle of joy won’t be a tiny baby forever. Soon the room will be re-decorated for a school child and then later a teenager, so it pays to be smart with your choices of the big-ticket decorating items, such as carpet, window dressings and wall cover. Also if you need to move in the near future, think of how the room will present to prospective buyers. Not everyone in the market will have a baby, and even if they do, the likelihood that their styling taste will be the same as yours is minimal. So before you grab the paintbrush to start plastering the walls in rainbows and butterflies, consider this practical approach to nursery decoration, which will save you money in the long-term, and create a more desirable home when it comes time to sell.

Most mums begin thinking about nursery design as soon as they find out they are pregnant, and often even earlier than that, but now that your little nugget of love is growing, it’s possible to be overwhelmed by the vast range of options available.

What colours are stimulating for the baby’s development? Is Hello Kitty fashionable or tacky? Do I have to go blue for a boy or pink for a girl?

To help you separate the on-trend from the tired, we have gathered sensible yet stunning design options, sweeping nurseries across the country right now, to help inspire while maintaining sophistication and saleability in your home.

Look up!To keep the walls neutral and

sophisticated, consider adding your pop of colour on the ceiling, with bold stripes or a playful pattern. It’s more affordable to decorate the ceiling than all four walls, and also easy to revert to normal when it comes time to re-decorate or sell the home. Choosing primary colours will make the rest of the nursery a breeze to decorate, and is also very stimulating for baby’s learning. Think bright yellow stripes or spots for a girl or deep blue or red for a boy. By keeping the walls and carpet neutral, you can now make features out of artwork, toys and furniture in the room.

Go 3DDepth and texture not only creates

stunning design features for your nursery, but it also increases your baby’s capacity to learn. Instead of a simple poster, consider creating your own artwork where you glue ABC blocks or fridge magnet numbers to a chalkboard. Instead of flat decals of butterflies, birds, bears or flowers, give the look more depth and texture by sticking 3D versions to the wall. Such as origami birds made from different coloured paper, or mirrored butterflies. Teddy bears made from fuzzy felt or bright artificial sunflowers. Choose your colours to match your feature ceiling or a feature rug in the room, but don’t

overdo the effect. Restrict your 3D wall decorations to one wall only for added impact.

Go GlamWho said a nursery had to be

pastels and ducks or owls or bears for that matter? A glamorous nursery can be just as stimulating for baby’s development, and the design inspiration may just last through the ages with a few minor tweaks, although mostly suitable if you know you are having a girl. Pretty and chic, a simple palette which is easy to embellish with glitz. Start with black and white and add your feature pops of excitement from there. Go bold with your feature colour, such as lime green or deep pink. Think a feature wall of glittering silver sparkle stars, a drop crystal light fitting that showers the room in rainbows when the light hits it during the day, a glamorous feature chair in hot pink, comfortable enough for you to spend multiple feeding hours snuggled up on it, a chic black cot, a fluffy black rug and mirror decals on the opposite side of the room to the sparkle silver stars. Feature wall paper is now being created as self-adhesive and temporary, so can be easily changed as your child’s personal taste develops. If you love the design, so will your wee bundle of joy, and with bright pops of vivid colour, sparkles, texture and movement, it’s perfect for baby’s development.

Practical work spaceThey don’t say that being a parent

is hard work for nothing. To truly enjoy the space with your child, don’t forget to include practicalities that will help to make being mum or dad just that little bit easier. Don’t forget the big comfy rocking chair, you’ll be spending many, many hours in it settling your wee one back to sleep. Consider mood lighting or two different lighting solutions. One bright during change time, and a

softer one for when you don’t want to wake bubs up.

Remember to allow for plenty of room for your change table, with your storage of accessories close at hand. Consider constructing or buying a desk with multiple storage cubes and drawers attached. Very handy while bubs is little, and then can convert into a study desk as they start school. An organised and clutter-free room will help you to feel less stressed after a long day of tears and tantrums too.

Above all, have fun with the decorating of your nursery. Treat the nursery like you would the rest of your home; if you love modern design, go with it. Don’t feel the need to fit some old-fashioned criteria or other’s idea of what a nursery should be. You will be the one spending the most time in there, so create a space that you will love to be in.

What'sOnCommunity Events

Monday, September 28Both local residents and those from as far away as Oamaru, Cheviot and Leeston, will flood East Street to sample local wares and snap up bargains for this annual Ashburton tradition which happens each South Canterbury Anniversary Day. Of course it’s the first day of the school holidays, so what a great way to start them with a famous market day of food, crafts and fun!

We’ll be having a theme again this year, “world cup sport”, so dress up and be in to win a spot prize!

We are lucky to have great support from Port FM who will be interviewing stallholders, you, the public, and also providing some entertainment. The Wizard of Oz characters will be performing over the lunch break as will the Cook Island Maori Cultural Group.

Check out the Arcade where the children have provided art work on world cup sports!

Local businesses have always relished the opportunity to have a stall and this year is no different and we are proud to say that over 50% of the stallholders are local, made up of CBD retailers and boutique businesses that live in the wider Mid Canterbury area.

This year sees more variety of stalls, many favourites that have attended for many years, BUT this year also sees many new stalls, including some new yummy food stalls.

It’s all go this year as the Retailers Group provide an excellent day of fun, food and exciting stalls.
