Preparation for the Word
The Call to Worship
Psalm 63 translated by Mary Sidney (1561-1621)
Leader: O God, you are both God and good to me. To find you I
therefore will employ my skill.
People: When first my sight the morning light shall see, within
my soul a thirst of you does dwell.
Leader: I crave your taste more than in this desert dry a springing
well.
People: I no less behold your might and glory bright than if I
were in your sanctuary.
Prelude “Praise Ye The Lord, The Almighty”
(Johann Gottfried Walter 1684-1748)
•Hymn 457 “I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art”
(Attr. John Calvin)
Call to Confession
Prayer of Confession (unison)
Forgive us, Lord, for forgetting where we came from. Forgive
us for overlooking the struggles and sacrifices of so many who
came before us. Forgive us for not caring very much about the
significance of ideas, the meaning of language, the lessons
some have tried to teach. We thank you for the dedication and
risk that resulted in the church we are sitting in this morn-
ing. Make us more worthy to take our place here.
Moment of Silent Confession
Kyrie 572 “Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us”
(John Merbecke 1510-1585) Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Assurance of Pardon
Leader: Accept the good news of the Gospel.
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
•Alleluia (Traditional Chant)
Instead of the “Alleluia, Give Thanks” we use the traditional
chant Alleluia, as a nod to Luther and Calvin being, originally,
Catholic. Sung as antiphon and response, the music director
sings and then congregation joins. Unaccompanied.
Children’s Sermon
“Jesus Loves the Little Children”
Jesus loves the lit-tle chil-dren, All the chil-dren of the world
Ev-‘ry col-or, ev-'ry race, all are cov-ered by His grace;
Je-sus loves the lit-tle chil-dren of the world.
•Passing of the Peace
Leader: . . . The peace of Christ be with you all!
People: And also with you.
•Gloria Patri (#579)
Proclamation of the Word
Prayer for Illumination
Anthem “Alleluia” (J.S. Bach 1685-1750) Adult Choir
JoAnn Pendley, Accompanist
Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:8-9 (page 178)
(from Middle English translation by John Wycliffe)
For bi grace ye ben sauyd bi feith, and this not of you; for it is the yifte of God, not of werkis, that no man haue glorie.
Leader: This is the word of the Lord!
People: Thanks be to God!

===== music notes =====
Today’s celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Refor-
mation draws from music and creeds of the early years of the Refor-
mation. The music for “Lord Have Mercy” and “Go With Us Lord”
date from the first century of the Reformation. The text of the first
hymn is attributed to John Calvin. Various Reformed, Reformed Bap-
tists, Congregational, and Presbyterian churches, which look to Cal-
vin as the chief expositor of their beliefs, have spread throughout the
World. The remaining hymns date from the second century of the
reformation. The creed hymn first appeared in a 1699 song book in
Germany. “What e’er Our God Ordains,” while Lutheran, has dis-
tinctly Calvinist leanings, and appears here from a 1917 hymnal used
for the 400th anniversary. The version of “A Mighty Fortress” is from
a translation of 1866 that keeps the warlike imagery of the original
German. The text “trusty shield and weapon” could be a reference to
the Counter Reformation. The 3rd verse can be seen as a veiled refer-
ence to the Catholic hierarchy and the reference to “this world’s
prince” can be seen as a reference to the Pope at Rome. The absence
of the comma in the last verse between child and wife might also be a
reference to priestly celibacy, introduced to prevent wealthy clergy
from having offspring who might demand an inheritance. Or not.
