from the editorWith autumn almost upon us, it is hard to believe where this year has gone. The events throughout the summer have been enjoyed by many and there is still plenty on the horizon. It does not seem long ago that the food festival was busy serving up many delights in Victoria Street; if you missed the last event then make time for the September event on the last weekend - it promises to raise the temperature – more information in this month’s edition. We have also been the topic of a film project as part of Theatre Mélange ECHO BURNHAM, culminating in a performance at the Princess Theatre (tickets available now). This edition also contains information about volunteering opportunities, creative up-cycling and events being organised by many of our local groups and societies. Please forward any editorial to me before 11th September for October’s edition, and enjoy this month’s!

deadline for the october issue is wednesday 11th September.

echo Burnham - Portrait of a coastal Town What’s special about Burnham-on-Sea? Following sell-out performances in Minehead (2010) and Watchet (2012), ECHO has arrived in Burnham-on-Sea, chosen as the third destination for the ECHO voyage along the Somerset coast. Produced in association with the Princess Theatre, using film, sound and live performance, ECHO BURNHAM is a colourful portrait of the town as seen through the eyes of the people who live here. For the past eight months, a film unit from ECHO has been working in the town, recording the distinctive sights and sounds, as well as individual stories capturing what is valued about Burnham past, present and

importantly, the aspirations for its future. This journey of discovery will culminate in a performance that will take place at the Princess Theatre from the 26th - 28th September. ECHO BURNHAM - Portrait of a Coastal Town will feature filmed real-life stories, the rich heritage and unique landscape of the area, accompanied by a compelling soundtrack. This is an original production by the “inspirational” Theatre Mélange. The company has gained a national reputation for exciting and unusual events that tour the UK and abroad. Tickets are available from the Princess Theatre box office 01278 784464 or www.theprincesstheatre.co.uk.

our Big Birthdays - charity eventTwo local women, Joanna and Suzie, have both had life-saving bone marrow transplants in the past two years. To celebrate their birthdays and to help raise funds and awareness for the charities that have helped them during their journeys, a

special day’s event has been organised. On Saturday 19th October between 2.30pm and 5pm, there will be crafts and cakes to buy, with performances from choirs and singers to enjoy. There should also be children’s activities such as balloon modelling, lucky dip and face-painting. This is a free event, but we are hoping for donations on the door for the charities. In the evening there are two local bands playing – Six Machine and The Ginger Hitlas. Tickets cost £5 and will give you chance to boogie on down. The venue for the day’s events is The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre in Burnham. The charities are Anthony Nolan, Leukaemia and Lymphoma research and the adult support unit of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Bristol Children’s Hospital, where both were treated. Donations of cakes for us to sell on the day or raffle prizes, would be appreciated. Please call or e-mail Joanna Burridge-Clayton on [email protected] or 780130 if you have any queries.

good as new: repair or revamp to save money and stop waste - by nick cater. We may not be

living through The Blitz, but I am sure the war-time spirit of make do and mend is alive and

well in Burnham-on-Sea.Despite the pressures of

a throw-away society, many people are learning and sharing the skills that allow them to make what they need, or do the simple repairs that avoid the cost and waste of throwing away items. Somerset's Green Routine waste prevention campaign is keen to encourage those efforts to revamp, repair and restore our valued possessions. It has collated a quick guide to modern make do and mend so you can find someone in the know, or have

a go yourself. This includes:* How to check what skills

and expertise exist in your community.

* Tracking down the courses and classes you can take to boost your abilities.

* Identifying the kinds of useful advice and ideas now available for little or nothing online.

* Reminders about the range of commercial repair services available.

Of course, September sees a new range of courses available from Somerset Skills and Learning in such areas as sewing, how to create Christmas gifts, jewellery making, knitting and patchworking. With many other courses on offer from commercial firms and

education centres, such as Bridgwater College, from dress making to car maintenance and upholstery, while local clubs, offering sewing to gardening and more, can offer support and advice. For more simple tips and tools, check out the Green Routine pages at Somerset Waste Partnership and sign up for once-a-month free mailings with helpful hints: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk Check out Green Routine in October for tasty (trick or) treats with Halloween party food.

apex Park Playday 2014 needs You! Were you one of the near-6000 visitors who came to this year’s Apex Park Playday? Rumoured to be one of the largest in the country, Apex Park Playday 2013 was a huge success and allowed parents to have a day-off from spending their hard-earned dosh to keep the kids entertained. This year’s activities included a climbing wall, zorbs, bouncy castles and slides, tai chi and a petting zoo amongst many others- over 50 activities in

total! The event is not just about the activities though, Playday also allows families to spend quality time together having a picnic and exploring one of Sedgemoor’s Green Flag award-winning parks.

The organising committee rely on obtaining grants and sponsorship to run the event, and unless funding sources can be found Playday may not be able to continue into 2014. Sedgemoor District Council and the Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group help out financially towards the event, as well as it being sponsored by the Children’s Centres in North Sedgemoor, Taunton and Brock House, the Somerset Play Forum, Community Games and Somerset County Council. Playday 2013 was also supported by the Bridgwater Lions, Admiral Blake and Burnham Masonic Lodges.

However, as we all know money is tight and these sources are fully stretched. This is where you come in! Playday 2014 could be a great opportunity to promote your business to the huge number of visitors, through sponsorship. If your business would be able to provide sponsorship towards Playday 2014, or if you would be able to volunteer your time to help out, please contact organiser Rosie Pike via 07867967087 or [email protected].

It is because of the hard work and effort of the Playday committee and volunteers, Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group and Sedgemoor District Council Parks and Clean Surroundings staff that every Playday is such a roaring success for all visitors, whatever their age. Thank you to all the visitors who donated at this year’s event to support Playday 2014.

Burnham and highbridge BandAfter much-enjoyed performances in their Burnham-on-Sea Princess Hall season of summer concerts, the Burnham and Highbridge Band is busy in preparation for the next in the series, which takes place on Sunday 29th September at 7.45pm. Tickets may be purchased at the door. At our exit polls, audience members have remarked that this is now a much more exciting band whose selection of music and quality of performance gets better with each outing. Band secretary Ken Henton said, “This is due to a growing commitment from members not only to rehearse well but also to apply an analytical approach to their playing which identifies where musicality can be improved. We are grateful for the efforts of David Fisher our Musical Director who demands hard work from the band but who is obtaining results, which, a couple of years ago, we could only dream of. At the price of £6 (£5 for concessions), it has to be excellent value for an evening out.”

Poppy appealRemembrance Day and the Two Minute Silence have been observed since the end of the First World War, but their relevance remains undiminished. When we

bow our heads in reflection, we remember those who fought for our freedom during the two World Wars. But we also mourn and honour those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts. Today, with troops on duty in Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world, Remembrance, and this two minute tribute are as important as ever. Each year the

nation expresses its unequivocal support for The Royal British Legion's work through the Poppy Appeal. The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance. Poppy Collectors appear in late October so everyone can make a donation and wear their poppy for Remembrance. We have found a group of volunteers prepared to act as Poppy Appeal Organisers BUT we still need to recruit for collections in the supermarkets. If you would like to get involved and can give your time please telephone Sue Meads on 01278 792021 / 07519278255.

new Players requiredBurnham Junior Rugby Club’s new season starts on Sunday 1st September at 10am. Teams from under 7s to under 16s train and play matches on a Sunday morning at the BASC ground in Stoddens Road from 10am - 12pm. Some of the older age groups train on an evening during the week. Why not come along and give rugby a try in a fun, family friendly and safe environment? The club have qualified RFU coaches and some current 1st and 2nd team players running the

coaching sessions with the boys and girls. The playing pitches and clubhouse facilities are some of the best in Somerset. Junior Vice Chairman Russell Dyson said, “New players are always welcome at the club whether they have played rugby before or are returning to the game. The club needs new players across all the age groups from under 7s up to the under 16s . Rugby is a great game to play that can involve players of differing abilities and size, and at Burnham we adhere to the RFU’s values for Junior Rugby which are Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline & Sportsmanship. The senior club is running three sides this coming season, so a healthy junior section is really important to feed players into the senior sides when they are old enough. Matches are played against local teams from all across Somerset."

repeat warning of scams and faster internet speeds for those who cannot yet get fibreI had hoped that more people had seen my previous warnings regarding the cold calling scam, but unfortunately the last month has seen a huge increase in the number of people falling for the “Cold Call IT Scam”. We are being notified of at least 2-3 calls for help per day about this issue. The Retired and the elderly seem to be the main target for this scam. Please let your parents, grand-parents, friends and neighbours know that if anybody unfamiliar calls advising the user that there is a serious problem with their computer,

not to enter into any dialogue and simply say “No thank you” and put the phone down. The fraudulent callers seem to be very convincing at letting you know your computer has a fault. One local customer was told that if she paid “Five Ninety Nine” they would clean her computer and make it work better, she promptly let them access her computer remotely via a legitimate tool called “Log Me In” and then they proceeded to charge her Visa card. Later when the customer had checked her bank account, she realised that they had taken nearly six hundred pounds, not five pounds and ninety nine pence! As she had paid on her debit card she felt there was little she could do as such cards carry less protection. We would still advise you contact your bank/Insurance company and advise them that fraud had been committed, in the hope that they can assist. On another matter, we have found some areas of Burnham and Highbridge cannot get the new fibre broadband, there are no apparent plans to reach all areas. We have recently been putting in a new solution via the use of mobile networks to provide speeds which currently average around 8mb and will go up to around 20-30mb within 6 months to a year. This does not rely on a fixed line, so please get in touch if this is of interest to you.

glastonbury comes to Burnham! The W.I. meet on the

fourth Tuesday of the month, except in December when we meet one

week earlier. The September meeting will be on Tuesday 24th September at the Community Centre, Berrow Road (next to the swimming pool). There is plenty of parking and we meet on the ground floor so there are no stairs to worry about. The meetings start at 2pm prompt and last for two hours. Every month we have an interesting speaker, and this month our

speaker is Michael Eavis from Worthy Farm in Pilton - home of the Glastonbury Festival. Everyone is invited to come along - we even welcome men as visitors! We have to make a small charge to cover our costs of hiring the room etc. but we keep it as low as possible at a mere £3, which includes light refreshments. For more information please contact Brenda Adams (President) on 01278 781771 or take a look at our website on www.burnhamwi.btck.co.uk

have you used your eyes yet today?Being able to see is something that can easily be taken for granted, but when someone starts to lose their sight the results can be devastating. People who have often led extremely interesting and independent lives, can suddenly find that the simplest tasks such as writing a cheque or going out for a walk, impossible to do. Somerset Sight has a County-wide Volunteer Visitor Service, matching up local volunteers with people who are visually impaired, offering them regular company and support. You need no particular skills to be a volunteer visitor, other than a little time to give and a willingness to help someone local to you who needs friendship and company. Visits can be flexible around your daily life - one hour per week or two hours per fortnight is all it takes, which is not a lot of time, but knowing that a regular person is visiting can make a huge difference to someone who is feeling isolated by their sight loss. Support in working as a volunteer is available, and expenses can be claimed. Our volunteers say that they enjoy visiting, as much as the people they go to see! If you have a little time to spare please contact Claire Packwood, Volunteer Co-ordinator on 01643 708382.

affordable art exhibition and workshopsThe

Somerset Art Group will be holding an exhibition on Saturday 21st September and Sunday

22nd September at The Bay Centre, Cassis Close, Burnham-on-Sea, TA8 1NN. The centre will be open from 10.30am to 4pm.

The Somerset Art Group will be holding an exhibition of paintings in a range of media such as watercolour, acrylic, ink and mixed media. Each artist brings their own individual style to modern and traditional subjects with the emphasis on colour, light and

originality. Many pieces are available for purchase and can be reserved by contacting us. There will be a range of prints and cards also available. In keeping with last year we have continued to keep our art work affordable, with prices ranging from £10 to £150. Admission is free, and there is ample free parking and disabled access/facilities. We will also be running two watercolour workshops, and further details can be found on our website www.somersetartgroup.co.uk or by calling Adeena Thomas on 01278 788557.

Workshop One – Creating Texture

Adding texture can lift a flat uninteresting painting to

a new level, giving it depth, tonal range and colour variety. In this workshop you will take a simple picture of a group of keys and learn how to use different techniques and media to enhance and bring out the beautiful colours that can be found in rust.

Workshop Two – Creating Beautiful Glowing Watercolour

This workshop will cover the fast and exciting technique of mingling watercolours to achieve glowing rich colours. During the session you will take simple drawings of flowers and learn how to use your watercolour paints to make your paintings dance with light and vibrancy.

come and meet new musical directorCome and join The Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society on Thursday 5th September and meet our newly appointed Musical Director, Nicholas Bromilow. We meet at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church hall, College Street, Burnham-on-Sea. This would be an ideal and exciting time to join the choir; Nicholas Bromilow has come with plenty of fresh ideas and is looking forward to taking us into a new era. We’re a friendly and relaxed group of people who like singing various types of music. We do sing serious pieces of music, but laugh a lot whilst learning it.

Our programme for Christmas is: Handel’s Messiah (five choruses), Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, also music from Rutter, Berlioz plus some traditional Christmas Carols. We’re a mixed choir, so ladies and gentlemen are welcome, as are all ages. Male voices - Tenors, Baritones and Basses, are especially welcome. If you’re not sure which you are, don’t worry we’ll help. Just 'seize the day' and go for it; there are no auditions. Reading music is an advantage, but if it is not one of your skills, there is plenty of help on hand. There is no excuse because the first three weeks are FREE, so you can try before you buy. Now what have you got to lose? For more information contact Mr. Bev Hearn on 01934 732041, visit us on our Facebook page or email our Secretary [email protected].

The Bd Jazz clubThe BD Jazz Club is the local Burnham area Traditional/New Orleans Jazz Club. The club usually meets on the last Friday of every month for regular club sessions at Laburnum House Lodge Hotel in Sloway Lane, West Huntspill, which is situated a short distance down the A38 from Highbridge – turn right opposite the Crossways Inn into Church Road and follow the signs.

The regular monthly club sessions continue on Friday 27th September, presenting the local band Bob Reynolds New Society Jazz. The venue is at our usual BD Jazz Club at Laburnum House Hotel; playing times are from 8pm to 11pm, admission £3. Find the full programme of events on the BD Jazz club page of www.newsocietyjazz.co.uk

For further information please contact Bob 01278 794709 or Diane on 01278 788070. We look forward to seeing you at one of our future regular club sessions or additional special events. BD Jazz Club is a non-profit making organisation that aims to preserve and promote New Orleans/Traditional Jazz.

donations Provide accessibility to Local Bowling clubDon Bridges, Chairman of Burnham Bowling Club and President of The Somerset Bowling Association, welcomes Terry Davison back to bowling. Terry, a member of Burnham Bowling Club for 43 years, has been incapacitated from bowling for the past three years. The club’s newly-acquired disabled-person’s bowls buggy has enabled Terry to play again. The buggy has also been used a number of times by other club members and visitors alike. The buggy, purposely designed for use on bowling-greens, enables bowling from the seat itself should the need be. Costing £3000, it was obtained primarily by a donation from Viridor Credits Environmental Company, and a second substantial donation from Somerset Community

Foundation - donations for which the club is extremely grateful. The club is still welcoming new members, whether disabled or not. Although the outdoor season finishes for the season on 22nd September, don’t let that put you off - try the free coaching sessions without committing to becoming a member and get a head start on next season should you then decide to join. Also, consider passing the winter months away by joining the indoor section which does not require becoming a full outdoor member. For details of outdoor membership contact the Men's Secretary, Alan Lane (01278 792508) or the Ladies' Secretary, Joan Hazelton (01278 792410). For indoor bowling, contact the Indoor Secretary, June Bridges (01278 781706). To try those free outdoor coaching sessions contact Ellis Davies (01278 760544) for details.

advice from Sedgemoor citizens’ advice BureauThis is the latest of a series of articles in which an experienced adviser from Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau offers readers guidance on matters that are of concern.

fraud on The inTerneTThe internet is a very convenient place in which to communicate and to do business. However, as with all business and communications centres, there is always a risk of fraud. There are many different examples but we have chosen to highlight Identity Fraud. Firstly, ensure that your computer has an up-to-date security system that will help to protect it and you against viruses and other malicious applications. Some security packages are free. If you suspect that an email, or something on a website, is a con, you are probably right. Similarly, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

idenTiTY fraudIdentity fraud is when someone steals your personal details to con you out of money. It can happen when you are not using the internet, for example, if you lose your passport or your driving licence. But, if you aren’t careful with your personal details when you go on-line, you could become the victim of identity fraud. For example, a fraudster could buy goods using your credit card details, or use your address and bank details to borrow money.

To avoid these dangers, check out the privacy policy of any company you deal with, ensuring that your details won’t be sent to other companies. Be careful in your choice of password. Don’t use whole words. Choose a combination of letters and numbers.

If you think you have become the victim of identity fraud, report the matter to the police. Once you have done this, a warning will be placed on your credit reference record so that a lender will check with you before granting credit. For more about identity theft, go to the Home Office website: www.identi tytheft.org.uk

Further, detailed advice can also be obtained by visiting one of Sedgemoor CAB’s drop-in sessions at:• Burnham-on-Sea Methodist Church,

College St. Burnham-on-Sea. (Tuesdays, 9.30am - 12.30pm).

• Hope Baptist Church, Church St., Highbridge. (Thursdays, 9.30am - 12.30pm).

• The Lions, West Quay, Bridgwater. (Monday-Friday 10am – 1pm; Saturdays 10am – 12pm).

• Cheddar Baptist Church, Lower North St., Cheddar. (Mondays, 9.30am - 12.30pm).

The caB offers advice that is free, independent, confidential and impartial.

axbridge restaurant with rooms to Join exciting new fundraising initiative for cats Protection

Lying at the foot of the Mendip Hills, The Oak House Restaurant with Rooms [www.theoakhousesomerset.com] boasts a selection of comfortable and well-appointed rooms, all of which have been furnished to a high standard and offered at competitive rates. The Grade II listed building also boasts a restaurant where the food is sourced from top quality season’s ingredients, featuring a high proportion of local, fresh and organic products. The Oak House is the first establishment to join a new fundraising initiative called ‘Make A Reservation for Feline Preservation’ launched by the Weston-super-Mare & District branch of Cats Protection. The Oak House will relay to some of their paying

guests that a £1 from their stay will be donated back to the Charity to help them continue making a difference to the lives of so many unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens.

Oak House Director Hannah Brown said, “As an avid cat lover I am thrilled to support my local branch of Cats Protection. The branch is run by volunteers who find loving homes for around 100 unwanted cats and kittens every year. Furthermore they neuter in the region of 600 cats per year to prevent unwanted litters from being born and becoming the abandoned cats of tomorrow.”

Cat Protection’s Regional Fundraising Manager Lynette Preston said, “We are really grateful that the Oak House has decided to join our new

initiative to help raise vital funds for Cats Protection. On average it can cost the branch £200 to neuter, microchip, vaccinate, care for and re-home just one cat. This figure can be higher if the cat requires veterinary treatment. With an ever-increasing demand we really appreciate their support.

To make a reservation at The Oak House please telephone: 01934 732444. If you are a proprietor of a hotel, bed & breakfast or guesthouse in the North Somerset area and would like to find out more about joining the initiative, then please contact Regional Fundraising Manager Lynette Preston on 01934 524956 or email [email protected].
