from the editorWelcome to the November issue of Local Reach.Now the nights are drawing in, it feels like winter is well on its way,

and Christmas will creep quickly upon us! At this time of year there is nothing like curling up in front of the fire with a good book (or a copy of Local Reach)! However, there is so much going on in our area that would be such a shame to miss out, e.g. local firework displays, charity events, clubs and of course Glastonbury Carnival! The lure of the fireplace now doesn’t seem so appealing!

There is lots of news in this month’s issue, e.g. the RSPCA celebrating a local anniversary, and updates from many local clubs including Mendip Ramblers and Street Epilepsy Action Branch. There are garden tips from Martin Mudie plus suggestions of how you can get involved in the local community.

Art and Design students at Strode College showed impressive skill and creativity in their first week at college, making cardboard couture costumes for the college catwalk.

Students worked together in small groups to create sturdy but stylish cardboard costumes in just one and a half days before the project finale - a catwalk show in front of other students and staff.

Some of the students created glamorous costumes such as Rio, Peacock, Bird of Paradise, Angel, Tribal Warrior Bird and Corpse Bride, while others went for a more humorous approach such as Roman Angel, Shakespearian Axeman and

Trojan Fish. All of the costumes showed a great deal of thought, imagination and skill.

Duncan Cameron, Strode College’s Sculpture Teacher, said: “We always kick of the year with a project to warm up the students’ creativity after the summer holidays and to get them working together. They’ve shown great design and construction skills and created some fantastic costumes using only recycled cardboard, brown tape, paper and string. We’ve had a great time working with them - watching their ideas develop and their confidence grow. I think we’re in for a great year of art and design at Strode.

Cardboard couture comes to college cat walk

A celebration was held at Strode Theatre recently to recognise the achievements of 33 young people from across the region who completed the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme with Strode College this summer.

In front of an audience of family and friends, Strode

College Principal, James Staniforth, presented them with certificates for successfully completing the NCS programme.

All those who took part in the four week course were aged 15 to 17. They enjoyed two weeks residential: one week of team building and outdoor activities

and one week learning how communities work; the third week was based at Strode College planning a social action project. They were guided on the course by local team leaders with experience as teachers, youth workers and careers advisors.

The Mid Somerset Camera Club meets every Tuesday evening at the Tor Leisure

Centre, Glastonbury at 8.00pm until approximately 10.00 pm from September until May. The group follows an organised and varied programme which includes tuition, visiting, speakers, practical sessions and competitions. Typically the Club holds several exhibitions every year including one at West Mendip Hospital which runs from November 2012 until January 2013.

There is a varied programme planned over the coming weeks:

6th November – The London Salon of Photography

3th November – Close up and Studio Portraiture – Two talks by proponents of the art of Macro &

Portrait photography. 20th November – Jenny and

Tony Byram – Pictures to Exe – Jenny and Tony are coming from Bristol with their workshop style demonstration on using Pictures to Exe – an alternative software for creating Audio Visuals.

27th November – Competition No 2 Shadows – colour and mono images.

The Club is affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain through the Western Counties Photographic Federation.

mid Somerset camera club musings from my Garden-By Martin MudieNovember – a month of frosts, carnivals and fireworks. Here at Chateau Martini, all is calm. For now, in the autumn of my life I do not seek to do winter gardening, other than admiring the trees and shrubs that line the front path en route to my local coffee shop (Milk, no sugar- in Street - an excellent destination).

The Lovely Muriel hopes each year that, at last, I will spend a little less on the garden. Not a hope, dear! For, by using planters and containers, there are a few easy steps to enjoying a bit of colour in this time of the year.

First, choose your container with care. Then select from a choice of shrubs either plain or variegated. Then add a few bulbs. which will provide a bit of green interest and flower in the spring. Happy Gardening

for wider, sharper fields of vision

The old days when the NHS offered basic spherical glass spectacle lenses to everyone has thankfully disappeared because it prevented the development of superior lens designs. The groundbreaking development of “Freeform” surfacing techniques has allowed lens manufacturer’s to produce the most sophisticated of lens designs with outstanding optical accuracy. Variable curves can be placed on one or both lens surfaces which enable thinner and flatter lenses to be produced regardless of which lens material is used.

These digital lenses can be produced in both single vision or varifocal formats and can be designed for normal optical frames or in wrap around frames for sporting activities and fashion sunspectacles. In reality, this advanced technology allows lenses to be designed for the individual client, taking into account the shape of the chosen frame, the client’s prescription and their facial features

and posture. These tailor made lenses which are precision engineered with 3D digital surfacing, allow the lens manufacturer to control peripheral distortion and aberrations which are produced at the edges of a standard lens. These technological advances result in lenses which can provide the wearer with wider fields of clearer brighter vision compared to standard spectacle lenses. The advantages of “freeform” lenses may be appreciated by everyone but powerful more complex prescription wearers will benefit the most.

A note of warning though: There are several parts involved in the production of a true “Freeform “lens. Trading Standards have not produced guidelines as to when the term “Freeform” can accurately be applied to a product and there is confusion within the optical industry. This has resulted in the benefits of “freeform” being misrepresented or over sold with some relatively basic lenses.

liSted buildinGSIf you live in a listed building youhave to look after the building to ensure that none of the features are damaged of allowed tofall into dis-repair: failure to do so can envolve the Distict Council enforcing the work and charging you for it! If you wish to carry out any work o it you have to get LISTED BUILDING CONSENT from the District Council for which they make no charge.

This can involve anything from demolition, rebuilding or extensions to new windows, exterior paint finishes and solar panels. All internal structural alterations also have to have permission and this can include anything from removing walls, fireplaces, decorative plaster work or timber.

Some of these alterations can also include Planning Permission for which there is a fee to the Council and in all cases you will have to provide plans showing the work you want to carry out.

conServation areaS.If you home is in a conservation area, you are resticted in what you can do to the outside, usually at the front. The list of items covered by the rules have changed and now include new windows, chimneys, flues, painting and any alterations to the part of the property facing the public areas. As for Listed buildings above, some of these will only involve LISTED BUILDING CONSENT which SHOULD BE FREE others will involve PLANNING PERMISSION as before.

Street parish council meetingsThe next member surgery will be held on Thursday 1st November at Street Parish Rooms from 11am to 12 noon. Two councillors will be available to meet residents and discuss local issues.

The November council meeting will be held on Tuesday 20th. Meetings begin with Public Question Time at 7.15pm. Meetings usually held in John Webster Room at Street Parish Rooms.

Spirituality in Glastonbury talkOn Wednesday 28th November Dr William Bloom, one of Britains most experienced authors and teachers in the mind-body-spirit field, is coming to Abbey House Chilkwell St Glastonbury with his talk entitled, "The Cosmic Christ and Collective Messiah". This talk is one of our series of lectures on "Spirituality in Glastonbury" and promises to be a very interesting and stimulating evening.

The RSPCA South East Somerset Branch are proud to say it will be 40 years old on November 24th this year. It is a tremendous achievement for a small group who in 1976 were told “you are not viable and cannot succeed” Wrong!

Over the years the group have helped many animals and their owners and taught many children and adults the meaning of caring for ALL animals. Because it covers an area where travellers and gypsies proliferate it has created special links to their communities and in the course of this have been grateful the insight into their culture

without which the group would have been unable to achieve what it has done. It has over the years received several of these sometimes large sometimes small

The group has a long term relationship with the town of Somerton from where it has sourced many of our supporters. Now most fund raising is based around the shops at Street and Somerton but the work is spread from Crewkerne to Yeovil, to Henstridge, to Wincanton and Bruton, to Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, Street, Somerton and Langport

From clearing a house of over 70 rabbits, getting a badger down from inside a chimney, rehoming previously ill treated animals, supporting an owner whose animal is ill and needs

financial help, to talking in schools and clubs or

supporting a national Society run campaign has all been in a days work

Do you want to make a difference in the community where you live or work? The Raising Aspirations programme has been designed by Somerset Community Foundation to help young people in Somerset develop self belief, confidence

and aspirational life goals to ultimately fulfil their potential.

The Foundation is working in partnership with Crispin School on an exciting project in which young people are benefitting from one to one support given by members of the local community who have pledged their time and commitment. In the first year 37 mentors have been recruited, representing a range of backgrounds, interests and business experience.

We are now looking to recruit additional mentors for the new Year 7 intake. Face to face meetings take place 3 times a term, in the school, each session lasting for between 30 and 45 minutes.

This year Willcox Close in Glastonbury, one of Methodist Homes sheltered housing schemes, celebrates it’s 40th Anniversary. A recent event saw residents being joined by Senior Staff from MHA and former trustees.

Everyone joined together in prayers and hymns of thanksgiving for the life of the Willcox Close community over the past four decades, and prayed for the continued support of residents and staff into the future.

This was followed by the planting of a tree by Arthur Snook , who has lived at the scheme since 1995, and he paid his very personal gratitude for the support he has received in his time of living at Willcox Close. As the first drops of rain were felt everyone retired to the lounge for a buffet lunch that had been prepared earlier by a group of residents, where people shared fond memories of past times at Willcox Close.

The Glastonbury Male Voice Choir is believed to be the oldest Male Voice Choir in the region and has been performing for the last 89 years.

The choir does a lot of fundraising for cancer charities, in the main, but also has a practice night at Glastonbury Town Hall where we have our regular weekly Tuesday night rehearsal at 8 ~ 9:30pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and join in where they may find that they have a hidden talent (as they may have always suspected) instead of just warbling in the shower (to the chagrin of the rest of the family). In other words join a family which UNDERSTANDS!!!

This year the choir has performed several well attended concerts including our special Guest Night, the Flower Festival concert at Street United Reform Church, Glastonbury Methodist Church for

Parkinson’s UK benefit, Diamond Jubilee concert at the Town Hall, Martha’s Care Concert (5th Oct.), Cossington Harvest Home, Cossington Village Hall, 13th Oct. Tracey’s Guest Concert (3rd nov. St.Thomas’ Church Wells (Tracey is our musical director and a rare talent, musically). Last in the year is our wonderful Christmas Concert at St.Johns Church, Glastonbury 12th Dec. Most of these have a nominated charity which benefits from the group’s dedication to the voice and all its glories!!

The choir’s repertoire is wide from popular, show, and choral music to try to appeal to a wide variety of musical preferences. It gives all members a great challenge and makes the group one of the most accomplished in the area. The choir also entered the Bath Choir Competition this year and were well received.

Latest News from Ashcott SchoolChildren from Woodpecker Class at Ashcott School have been inspired by the Paralympic Games of London 2012 and have been creating a range of sculptures from recycled bags and newspapers. The children worked

collaboratively to create the sculptures based on Paralympic sports such as archery, boxing and wheelchair basketball. The child-sized sculptures are displayed

around the school, reminding the pupils of their own unique skills and abilities.

The next meeting of the Street Society will include a talk by Sarah Hare.

Street Epilepsy Action Street Branch are holding a National Tea Break event on Tuesday 23rd October at Street British Legion Club in Farm Road, open to the members of public, to raise awareness and funds for those who live and support those living with epilepsy. Everyone is welcome to come to help or join in to make this event a large success.

Young people from Somerset Rural Youth Project’s National Citizen Service social action group helped to raise over £300 for Bliss, a charity that provides care and support for premature and sick babies.

The young people organised and took part in a 10-mile walk along the Bridgwater-Taunton Canal, inviting family, friends and members of the community. The group came together, supported each other and displayed commitment and motivation to

their project.Supported by funds from 02

the Free Walkers designed and organised T-shirts, a banner and secured a range of fantastic prizes from local businesses in Bridgwater for a raffle. The Free Walkers held a refreshments and cake stall at the halfway point with kind permission from The Boat and Anchor. The event raised £324.71 in total.

Youth Worker Julie Rickwood said: “It has been an absolute privilege to work with the Free

Walkers group. They have shown great attitude and dedication to their social action group for a charity which has touched members of the group in a significant way. They have bought together diverse members of the community to take part in a lovely activity raising a great sum of money for Bliss.”

Clubbing together has benefitted a Somerset youth charity by more than £700.

Bridgwater-based Chartered Financial Management held their inaugral golf day at Enmore Park Golf Club on Thursday, September 20, to raise funds for their chosen charity of 2012, Somerset Rural Youth Project.

The event attracted 36 players and as well as a team competition there was also an individual competition to win the charity cup. The winner of this, Geoff Baker, also wins corporate hospitality to Bath Rugby on March 4 for four people and he gets to nominate a local charity for next year’s event as

part of his prize.Each player donated £10 to the charity and

Chartered Financial Management agreed to match whatever was raised on the day.

Organiser and director of Chartered Financial Management Jon Marshfield said: “We had a very successful day with guests enjoying a great day’s golf in splendid sunshine. They also took the opportunity to embrace fundraising for SRYP. We are delighted to match the £370 raised on the day to give a total of £740 for the charity.”
