A golden opportunity for families and individuals to enjoy a lovely day out around the Somerset Levels while also helping threatened and endangered wildlife is being offered by the acclaimed Secret World wild animal rescue centre.

The East Huntspill based charity is appealing for a cavalcade of hundreds to take part in their Willows and Romans fundraising bike ride on Sunday April 15.

The aim of the exercise is to make people, especially youngsters, more aware of wildlife and the joys of being out in the countryside while at the same time raising funds for Secret World’s £4.4 million wild animal hospital and education centre project.

Charity founder Pauline Kidner said sadly it was a fact that children now spent half the time outdoors that they did 40 years ago and many could not even identify an oak tree.”

Starting and fi nishing at Secret World, there will be an opportunity to see some of the sanctuary’s wildlife guests before setting out to explore beauty spots of the Somerset Levels on the Willows and Romans ride.The event is being organised by the Bridgwater Cycling Club and comprises a two hour circuit mainly on the fl at for families and other cyclists or a four to fi ve hour circuit for those who want to go a bit further.

Pauline revealed that Secret World would receive around 5,000 injured or orphaned

animals and birds over the coming year, yet when wildlife needed people’s support most, the nation was increasingly losing touch with nature,

“The launching of our new Call of the Wild hospital and education centre project is a positive move to redress the balance and we are appealing for everyone in the region to give us their support so that we can open on schedule in 2013,” she said.

We all protect our skin from burning and skin cancer by applying suncream, but what about our eyes? The eyes are exposed to sunlight all of the time and damage to the sensitive tissues of the eye can occur. Some people don’t give this a second thought but they should!

There are three types of UV radiation; UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC is usually absorbed by the Ozone layer but this is likely to cause more problems in the future. UVA and UVB reaches the earth’s surface and can have adverse effects on our body tissues.

Artificial UV sources include welding machines, tanning beds and lasers but I will not discuss these in this article.

Short term exposure to excessive UV can cause “Photokeratitis” which is inflammation of the cornea or effectively “sunburn of the front of the eye”. This may be painful, causing red eyes, a gritty burning foreign body sensation and excessive tearing. Fortunately these symptoms are usually temporary without permanent damage to the eye.

Long-term exposure to UV radiation can be more serious! Cumulative UV damage can cause

cataract, skin cancer around the eyes, pterygium ( a growth of tissue at the corner of the eye) and pingueculae (raised yellow lesions on the white of the eye). There may also be an association with macula degeneration.

People who have outdoor lifestyles are most at risk but we should all consider protecting ours and our childrens eyes. The wearing of wide brimmed hats will reduce the amount of light striking the eyes but a good quality pair of sunspectacles is recommended. A “wrapped” lens shape will help to protect against light from the sides.

Transitions lenses which change colour with the brightness level are useful for a general wear pair of spectacles and polarised lenses are fantastic for a dedicated pair of sunspectacles. These are available to individual prescriptions.

Sunspectacles also reduce the amount of visible light entering the eyes, thereby reducing glare and improving visual comfort. Your Optician should be happy to discuss the options of tinted eye protection with you. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Everyone has heard of or knows someone who has or has had cataracts. But what are they?

A cataract is an age related change, the same as hair going or your skin wrinkling. It is not a disease and is nothing to be frightened of.

Inside the eye is a focusing lens made of living tissue. When young the tissue is transparent and lets light through to form a picture on the retina. The lens is also flexible and can change shape to allow a range of focusing.

As it ages the tissue begins to lose its transparency and starts to become a little cloudy or opaque. Some light that hits the lens gets scattered or absorbed, thereby reducing the brightness and overall clarity of the retinal image. This is the early stage of cataract formation.

At this stage an individual may not be unduly affected since the reduction in vision occurs gradually. As the cataract worsens, clarity, brightness and colour contrast will all be reduced and eventually this will affect an individual’s quality of life.

A cataract can be removed at any stage of its development and does not need to be ‘ripe’. Someone who drives or works with computers has greater visual requirements than someone who spends the day gardening. The first individual is more likely to benefit from cataract surgery at an earlier stage.

Cataract surgery is considered nowadays as a minor operation.. The operation is usually carried out under local anaesthetic and is a day surgery. Having had a cataract removed people usually comment on how bright and vivid colours appear.

In order to balance up their spectacles, people usually need to visit their optician about six weeks following their operation. Your optician can easily identify the presence of a cataract and should discuss with you whether further action is required.

Early cataracts tend to cause short-sightedness and new spectacles may be all that is needed but directional lighting will also help with reading and close up work. In particular daylight reading lamps are beneficial since they enhance contrast, don’t distort colours and produce ‘cold’ light.

In summary cataracts are a normal age-related change and will affect everyone eventually. They are easily treated, often giving people a new lease of life.

Back Pain: Prolapsed vertebral discsBouts of back pain are very common, less than 1 in 20 cases of sudden onset back pain are due to a prolapsed disc. Most cases are caused by a minor problem to a muscle, ligament, or other structure in the back.

A prolapsed disc often causes severe pain. The disc can press on a nerve root, which also causes pain and other symptoms in a leg or arm.

Heavy lifting or bending in an awkward position may trigger this; obesity and increasing age are other infl uencing factors.

The symptoms may persist for several weeks, before gradually improving. The usual advice is to do normal activities where possible and visit a suitable health professional. Painkillers may provide relief and physical treatments from an osteopath may also speed recovery. Surgery can be an option if the symptoms persist.

Planning permission is the Council saying you are allowed to build any structure or carry out alterations - Building Control is the Council saying you are building it correctly bearing in mind safety and environment.Planning Permission - Most extensions or alterations to the outside of your house will require planning permission from the local council.. There are exceptions called "permitted developments" which include extensions to the rear or side of the property of a certain maximum size. Street & Glastonbury Musings from My GardenBy Martin MudieEvery summer the Lovely Muriel loves to have a riot in the garden. Now before you start getting excited what she enjoys is the riot of colour available through bedding plants. All the books say that bedding should not be planted out before the end of May to avoid frosts, but there is a way of cheating by planting up containers in April. For down here in sunny Somerset we rarely get a frost now and if you did you can always protect with fl eece or bring the pot under cover.

For the early bird you can get lots of lovely plants now or even those little baby plants most garden centres sell. As to choice it really is up to you.

Preparation:The main thing with pots is to treat them as a cocktail. Take any ordinary potting compost – add water retaining gel pellets and fi nish up with the slow release feeding pellets. Quantities will be on the packs.

Or if you like it easy you can buy compost with all three in.Pots:I have used anything and everything. My favourite was an old pink loo my neighbours were disposing – complete with reservoir – sadly the Lovely Muriel felt it lowered the tone – something I’ve never bothered about – and I had to throw it away.Purchasing:I have found that two nurseries excel in bedding:

Book SwapThe children at Ashcott Primary School took part in a Book Swap last week. The Book Swap was organised by the ‘Reading Champions’ and ‘Reading Angels’ – groups of children at the school who have made it their aim to promote the enjoyment of reading to younger children in the school.

“It is fantastic to see the impact on the levels of enthusiasm for reading in our younger children as a direct result of these pro-active young people!” said Richard Briar, Headteacher.

All the children were encouraged to bring in books from home which they had read and in exchange they were able to select books to take home with them. The event was well supported by parents and children with nearly 200 books being swapped on the day!

Street & Glastonbury

The children at Ashcott Primary School marked Book Week with a wide range of activities related to the enjoyment of reading. Children were visited by “Arabella Storyteller and Fannysarah Storysharer” at the start of the week and each class were involved in making stories come to life through role-play and storytelling. Later on, the children created monster puppets and used them for storytelling too.

The library was transformed overnight when the ‘monster story cave’ appeared full of books about monsters – the children loved sitting in the cave and sharing books by torchlight!

On the Wednesday evening there was a ‘candlelit bedtime story evening’ in the school hall which was very well attended by parents and children. Everyone came in their pyjamas and brought duvets, sleeping bags and pillows with them for an exciting evening of bedtime stories read by the teachers, parents and pupils - hot chocolate and biscuits were served by the staff too!

The excitement continued on the Thursday, which was World Book Day, and everyone came dressed as monsters for the day, including the staff!

A group of A Level Music and German Language students from Strode College recently discovered why Berlin is such a great city to visit for learning and leisure.

The fifteen students and their Strode tutors made the most of their few days in this vibrant German capital, taking in some fascinating sights, sounds, cultural and historical highlights.

As they toured the city the students got a great sense of history, but they also discovered the thriving modern day capital. They took in the remnants of the Berlin Wall, the Story of Berlin Museum, the Holocaust Memorial and the Brandenburg Gate, where they saw the two still quite different 'halves' of the city - the former East and West Berlin.

Strode’s German language students enjoyed a talk in the

German parliament; found out about the city's history in the days when it was divided by going to the 'Haus am Checkpoint Charlie'; and they visited a specialist art and technology college, where they were shown round by German students and found out about 16-18 education in Germany.

The music students enjoyed four wonderful concerts during their visit: the Erlenbusch Quartet, which featured a highly expressive programme by Wolfe and Brahms; a modernistic production of the opera Eugen Onegin by Tchaikovsky; an outstanding and stirring rendition of Bruckner’s Symphony No 9 from the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Simon Rattle; and the glorious Prokoviev ballet Romeo and Juliet, which the language students also enjoyed.

The music students also visited the “amazing” Philharmonic Hall Music Museum, which has instruments illustrating the development of western tonal music from the harpsichord through to interactive synthesisers.

Marian Jones, Strode’s A Level German Tutor said: “The trip was a valuable opportunity for our A Level German language students to try out their language skills, to find out about German culture and history, and to see what city life has to offer. The whole visit helped to put their learning of German in a real context. Also, for some of our students, Berlin was a first taste of city life and a chance to see how different life can be, even in another part of Europe; a real and enjoyable learning experience for our students on many levels.”

Weighing in at just 100grms with her umbilical cord still attached, Hope is among the tiniest baby badger cubs ever to arrive at the Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre in Somerset.

And her timing could not have been more impeccable coming only days after famous Discworld author Sir Terry Pratchet launched a £4.4 million Call of the Wild Appeal for a new Wildlife Animal Hospital at the sanctuary.

Now Hope, who was found with a fully grown injured female badger sheltering in a garden summerhouse in Crewkerne is being fed through a syringe every two hours around the clock.

But a big surprise was in store for Secret World staff who recovered the pair because a vet quickly established that they were definitely not mother and daughter!

Secret World founder Pauline Kidner said it could only be surmised that Hope’s mum gave birth in a nearby set and took her off spring into the summerhouse but then abandoned it leaving her tiniest daughter behind.

“We can only assume that her cries were

heard by another female who had been chased out of the set and attracted to the summerhouse in search of food,” she said. “The female who had some minor injuries has been treated and will be returned to the wild shortly but Hope will be staying with us until she had been fully reared and taught how to fend for herself,” said Pauline.

Besides the caring Secret World staff, this amazing story has an unsung hero because if nine-year-old Isabel James had not left her parents’ summerhouse door open, the badgers would never have found a refuge. And it was mum Kaye who raised the alarm when she went to the summerhouse to collect the feed for her chickens. “The seed was scattered all over the place and there sticking out from behind our sofa was a long grey tail,” she said.

Every Wednesday afternoon a group of older people join together at the Crispin Centre in Street for a good ol’ sing-song. The Golden-Oldies Charity run this singing session with Gina Cleverley as the session leader. Each week older people from the local community join together singing the hits of the 50s, 60s and 70s – including songs from Cliff Richard, Dusty Springfi eld, Tom Jones and Elvis. There are no auditions, it’s just for people who love to sing and everyone is welcome.

The charity was started by Bath-based choir leader Grenville Jones with four sessions in 2008. It now runs them all across the west of England. Sir Cliff Richard is the Patron.

An independent study by academics at the University of Bath concluded that “participation

in the Golden-Oldies enhances a participants health and well-being, strengthens and stimulates communities.”

Goldies, as it has become fondly known, brings people together for a fun session of singing, stretching, laughter and friendship – there’s even some dancing! Betty Barrett never misses her Monday morning session in Bath. Aged 86 she says “I love going to Goldies. I’d be stuck at home if I didn’t go. You can’t keep me away!”

To join the Goldies session, just come along at 2pm each Wednesday afternoon to the Crispin Centre, Street for a warm welcome and lots of fun.

On Tuesday 24th April 2012 there will be a talk by Tom Mayberry on the new Taunton Museum, and the Heritage Centre for Somerset which has been built in Taunton. The new Taunton Museum of Somerset was opened on 29th September 2011.

One of the prize exhibits is the Frome Hoard, the crock of Roman coins only recently discovered but the exhibits have been collected from all over the county, telling the story of Somerset from prehistoric times to the present day. As the visitors walk through the different rooms they are take on the journey through local history. Previously closed parts

of the castle have been opened and the interior has been fi tted out with the latest in display cabinets and audio visual equipment.

The Heritage Centre provides a home for the Somerset Registration Service and Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society, the county's oldest voluntary organisation devoted to the study of Somerset's past.

The Somerset Heritage Centre is open to the public for researching old documents for free, a charge is made for duplicating or using a digital camera. If you are in to geneology this is the place to go.

Tom Mayberry's talk will be a good introduction to these new resources, and the society has arranged for an out of hours visit to the Museum as its May event. (Those interested in this trip on 24th May need to contact Linda Wilson on [email protected] or ring Nina Swift on 01458 443881)

A New Museum and Heritage Centre for Somerset

The Mid Somerset Camera Club meets every Tuesday evening at the Tor Leisure Centre, Glastonbury at 8.00pm until approximately 10.00 pm from September until May. The group follows an organised programme which includes tuition, visiting, speakers, practical sessions and
