from the editorHappy Easter – Hopefully we will all be enjoying a lovely Spring Bank Holiday and this will continue through the summer!

With many events being organised throughout the next few months – it is important that we support them by attending or offering our time to ensure they are managed effectively. If you feel you would like to help run events contact Bos –jobs.com for more information (more details in this month’s edition). If you would like more information on events in and around the area visit www.burnhaminformation.co.uk for their events calendar which Ian Jefferies has been busy co-ordinating at Burnham Information Centre, don’t forget this is not just a service to visitors but the local community also.

The Town Team are actively seeking a Town Crier to offer their time on a voluntary basis to promote events happening throughout different locations through the town. Meanwhile we are busy organising events at Marine Cove – it would be lovely to see you there. Enjoy this months edition of Local Reach, if you would like to publicise an event or place advertisement in future editions please get in touch. The Burnham Beer Festival features a fabulous array of real ales including such gems as Stonehenge Breweries ‘Danish Dynamite’, Cheddar Ales ‘Totty Pot’ plus a selection of traditional local Farmhouse ciders. A full list of the Beers and Ciders on offer will be published on the Ritz Website nearer the event, and a beer menu will be handed out to everyone on arrival at the festival.

The Ritz Travers suite is the hub of the Festival although visitors are welcome to use all of the Ritz Bars and there will be some great live music on stage at regular intervals though the weekend. This year features two well known local bands, Snatch & co on the Saturday night and Atticus Finch on Sunday night.

Home cooked food Food will be available during the Festival and other activities include Skittles, traditional pub games and a Big prize charity raffle.

The Burnham Beer Festival runs from Midday until late on Saturday 4th May, Sunday 5th May and Monday 6th May. More information can be obtained from the Ritz 01278 785365 or www.ritzclubburnham.co.uk

spring fairSaturday 11 & Sunday 12 May 10am – 4pmThe Walled Gardens will be filled with music, entertainment, stalls and visitors during the Spring Fair, as everyone enjoys the surroundings of the beautiful gardens as they begin their journey into the summer months. For a lovely day out for all the family, come along!

For further information see our website: www.canningtonwalledgardens.co.uk

Church Street, Cannington, Somerset, Ta5 2Ha01278 655042

The Walled Gardens are situated in the village of Cannington and lie within the grounds of a medieval priory. The buildings and gardens have a long history and have always played an important part in the life of the local community.

First established in about 1138, by nearby Lords of Stogursey, the manor and church was later given by Robert De Courcey as the main endowment for a house of Benedictine nuns. It is said there is a network of tunnels leading from the Court to various spots in the village so that the nuns and nearby monks could meet in secret, and over the years many local stories have survived concerning ghostly visitations by nuns.

Since then, Cannington Court has been a Roman

Catholic industrial school for boys, Somerset Farm Institute, Cannington College and as it is now, part of Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre. Since becoming part of Bridgwater College, there has been significant redevelopment of the Walled Gardens, and in 2009, they were officially opened by HRH the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward.

The gardens have achieved the accreditation of Quality Assured Visitor Attraction from VisitEngland and are a beautiful treasure, with tea rooms, a plant shop and gift shop as well, (which you don’t need entry to the Gardens to visit). With many events throughout the year, the gardens are perfect for all age groups, and are not to be missed!

end of an era The car boot at Sanders have been going for five years in aid of the Freewheelers Blood bike charity, due to a new manager implementing new rules & regulations we feel we have to call it a day, sadly the manager feels that we didn't bring anything to the store, which I strongly disagreed with.

Over those years we have raised a lot of money for the bloodbikes & made some great friends sellers & buyers, and we had a great reputation as being a good traditional car boot, so on that note I would like to thank Peter Burke the previous manager for letting us use the ground and his support to the Freewheelers Charity and every body that made it work. Thank you.

I'm moving away very soon to Oxfordshire but a big thanks to all the people in the surrounding areas who supported & raised money for us. Without the public support the Freewheelers could not survive. Thank you Regards Allan Roberts Freewheelers Car boot organizer.

Benefits, Brass & the Girtest, Grandest DayThe April meeting of the Burnham-on-Sea W.I. is on

Tuesday 23rd April 2013 at 2pm. The speaker this month is Phillip Hoyland with the interesting title "Benefits, Brass and the Girtest, Grandest Day!" Phillip Hoyland lives in Burnham-on-Sea and will be telling us about West Country Friendly Societies and their regalia.

He became hooked on the whole social aspect of these Societies and the carrying of brass emblems was very much part of Somerset history. Most villages in Somerset had a Friendly Society and each had its own individual brass emblem.

We meet at the Community Centre in Berrow Road, Burnham-on-Sea (next to the swimming pool). All visitors are welcome to come along and join us for an interesting two hours. The charge for visitors is only £3 and for that you get to listen to our speaker, have a cup of tea and a chat. Bargain!

For more information please contact the President of Burnham W.I. Brenda Adams on 01278 781771.

The last month has been another reminder how people should backup their data and ensure that it is in two separate places. There has been several failures of USB memory sticks (also known as pen drives), where people have used this as the sole location for important files such as documents and pictures. These sticks can fail without warning so please make sure that you save your data on your computer and then create a backup elsewhere. This can also apply to moving files onto an external hard drive which is often done to speed up a computer. The problem with any data stored on a single location, is that if that location fails, there is no backup!

Recently, we have also seen a big increase in Windows XP computers being compromised by “RansomWare” – this is software that tells you that you have broken the law and need to pay a fine of around £100. This software blocks the computer from being used until the fine is paid. Obviously do not pay this fine, but get in touch with ourselves on 07973 536299 to arrange removal. Please also don’t fall prey to the

computer cold call – where somebody says they are from Windows/Microsoft and tell you that your computer has a virus. However convincing they sound, please just say “No thanks” and put the phone down!

Due to Microsoft ending support for Windows XP soon, now would be a good time to think about either upgrading to the new Windows 8 operating system, or possibly a new computer. As Microsoft cease “Windows Updates”, this will leave XP computers more open to being compromised – and in the worst cases, computer can be compromised without the owners being aware. This essentially gives a 3rd party control of the computer to do as they please. Please get in touch if you would like any help either upgrading your computer, or if you would like us to supply you with a new computer. We can help transfer your files and set the machine up as close as possible to your current system, plus give some training to show you how the new system works.Neil Buzzard - Computer Problem Solutions LtdTel: 07973 536299

We have an interesting programme for the year with speakers each month. Come and join us for a friendly chat over a cup of Tea or Coffee and Cake. Whether for flowers or vegetables, gardening offers Burnham-on-Sea families many ways to cut waste, save money and enjoy fresh air and exercise. You could start or improve your composting – at least 77,000 of us in Somerset have a compost bin – or reuse waste to enhance your gardening. Greener Gardening is April’s theme in Somerset’s Green Routine waste prevention campaign, which offers simple ways for people to save money, resources and time. In the garden there is plenty of support for those wanting to go greener, such as local Compost Champions happy to help you get the mix– carbon and nitrogen, brown and green – just right.

Keen on grow-your-own? Somerset Community Food has partnered with Garden Organic to help volunteers become Master Gardeners and spread the word. With improving weather and everything starting to grow, now is the time to try growing some veg in your garden or allotment. Just a yard? Try pots. Only a window box? Herbs are the answer to spice up your

cooking. Could you compost more? Use all you can, from fruit

and veg peelings, egg shells, coffee grounds and tea bags, to the bedding and the rest from vegetarian pets and even a little shredded cardboard. Have family fun with greener gardening activities: help the kids turn old drinks cartons into bird feeders or grow seedlings in yoghurt pots.

For plenty more ideas and advice, and monthly mailings of tips and tools, check Somerset Waste Partnership’s Green Routine pages: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. For those able to do a bit more, Saturday 6 April sees training in food skills in Taunton to help families save up to £50 a month – details on the website.

The beautiful black jackdaw soared up into the sky. He glided along smoothly with no obstacles in his way. For ages he just flew and thought, until suddenly the world went misty and he couldn’t see anything – so he stops. He looks down and there is a tiny clearing through which he sees lots of blue, only then does he realise that he is stuck in a cloud! DUN DUN DUN …….

He is not sure what to do now, you may think “Why can’t he just fly out of the cloud?” or “fly through

the small hole?” But what none of you know is that clouds are nearly

impossible for birds to get out of. The jackdaw, Bob knew this – but was not giving up. Bob loved to think and solve pretend problems, but this was not pretend, this was real and he started to panic. He told himself that panicking would not make anything better, so he thought about shouting, but he knew no one would hear him. He thought about flying around and trying to find a way out, but knew it was hopeless. Bob was getting hungry and it was getting dark. He needed shelter, water and food fast. He was just getting desperate when he had the most ingenious idea ever, he would eat the cloud! What could go wrong?

“I wonder what it tastes like?” he thought out loud , “Well there’s only one way to find out 1,2,3…..”

Wow! It tasted amazing!!!! It almost tasted like candy floss or maybe chocolate or something like milk..? No definitely candy floss. He needed more and then

perhaps he could get out of the cloud. He chomped, chewed and gulped until there was

nothing left. Hmmmmm, so tasty perhaps he could just have one more, so he had another cloud and then couldn’t stop, cloud after cloud after cloud.

After lots more chomping, chewing and gulping he was finally full up. He flew heavily down to a nearby field, there was bird seed scattered everywhere, but he really didn’t feel like eating. Lots of other blackbirds, robins and sparrows where munching away happily, pecking at the ground. They all looked around when he ungracefully landed.

Suddenly every bird for miles flew up in the air in a panic, screeching at the top of their voices and flying far away. Bob rushed over to a clear puddle on the path and looked at his fat reflection. At first he gasped then he started to laugh, he was absolutely covered in cloud from head to foot. He looked rather odd, so he had a quick dip in the water and surprisingly the cloud came off. He was wet so found a warm sunny patch to dry off, then looked up into the sky and gasped again he had eaten all the clouds. He hoped no one would notice, though knew they probably would, but he wasn’t worried because he knew the clouds would come back again soon – he was now the Candyfloss bird.

Having spent some time contemplating what our predecessors did, let us now consider where they did it. These properties come in two basic groups – those that are still with us and those that are not. Many of those that are gone have passed without any regrets. Although some would still have been with us if the laws protecting buildings of historical and architectural interest had come into force a few decades earlier, but to begin with we shall look at some of those that are still with us. As with most communities where people have dwelt for any length of time, the church is the oldest building – Saint Andrews is no exception as in early days it was only the church and peerage that had sufficient money to build in stone. Documentary evidence suggests that it replaced an earlier Saxon structure of wood which stood nearby.Probably it is Saint Ann’s Villa which is the next oldest building, although some of the older farmhouses might just pip it by a decade or so, an easily observed indication of such a

farmhouse is the nature and condition of the brickwork. Unlike modern machine made bricks, or the Victorian handmade ones which were fired in commercial kilns at higher temperatures, the bricks used in these older buildings were made on site from clay dug out of a hole nearby and fired in something akin to an overgrown charcoal burner’s clamp, resulting in a softer and more porous product. With weathering, this resulted in a roughened surface to the brick which provided an ideal footing for some types of lichen which, well established over the centuries, gives the walls as unmistakable appearance.Although the external appearance of Saint Ann’s has altered little over the centuries, the men who built it would have difficulty recognising its interior, except for the staircase which still retains its elegant appearance. It was at Saint Anns that the Viscount Cave one time Lord Cancellor of Britain lived for many years until he died in 1928 and was buried in Berrow Churchyard. Tregunter, built as retirement home for a royal chef,

stands on the site of a much older farmhouse, the cellars of Between 1860 and 1870 there was something of a building boom in Burnham with one or two entrepreneurial builders getting stuck in, of whom George Reed is probably the best known. He lived in the Manor House, a name he bestowed upon it without any legal right. Much of his work remains – Catharine and Julia Terraces named after his daughter and grand-daughter respectively at one end of the original Esplanade, with the Reeds Arms with the adjoining Pier Tavern at the other end.Remembering that it is only recently in the scale of events that Highbridge became a town in its own right, separate from Burnham. At the beginning of the 19th Century, the first building dedicated for public worship, Hope Baptist Church was built and still fulfils the function for which it was intended.Written by Bob Thomas – for more information on the History of Burnham on Sea – consider purchasing Bobs book from Hurleys Book Shop.
