from the editorAlthough it might have been short-lived, we did at last see a sunny bank holiday weekend in May, so I hope you were all able to take some time to enjoy the outdoors whilst the sun lasted. My family and I of course did the obligatory barbecue!

At this time of year there are often many events taking place, and I know this to be true of the Bridgwater area due to the overwhelming number of people who have been in touch with me to promote their event. I would like to thank you for your contributions, and if this time your event isn’t featured, it’s only because we’ve run out of space, and it will be featured in the next issue!

Sunday 16 June is of course Father’s Day, and I hope everyone has something planned to thank and remember all dads, especially during this day. I know the Junior Group at Victoria Park Community Centre will be busy on the lead-up to the day, with lots of activities planned, including card making. There’s more information about this group in the magazine.

And so I wish you a happy June, and look forward to hearing from lots of you ready for the July issue! To advertise in LocalReach and to receive our ratecard with prices and further info email: [email protected]

Food is one of the biggest areas of waste for families in Bridgwater, who can easily spend £50 a month on ingredients and meals that are discarded uneaten.

Simple steps for better storage - from what can be frozen to understanding food label dates - are an easy part of saving money, preventing waste and eating well.

Savvy Storage is the theme for June in Somerset’s Green Routine waste prevention campaign, which throughout the year is finding new ways for people to make more of what they have.

Among the ideas to save time, money and food:• Keep a food waste diary – a list on the fridge

will do – to see what you discard and why, so you can take action; buy less, improve portion control, put less on plates, or store items better.

• Check Green Routine’s label guide to store foods correctly and at the right temperature. More food than you expect can be frozen or put in the fridge. Most people keep the fridge at the correct 0C-5C temperature; are you in the cool crowd?

• ‘Use by’ is the important label date for perishable produce. Eat food up to the ‘use by’ date, but not beyond even if it seems fine. ‘Best before’ refers to quality not safety, with one vital exception: never eat eggs after the ‘best before’ date.

• Store foods in date order, so none goes to waste and meal planning is made simple. Label what is in your freezer and keep a list. Save by preserving cheap harvest gluts with freezing, making jam or pickling. Once defrosted, cook and eat frozen foods within 24 hours.

• Monitor progress by checking the weekly level in your food waste container and keeping a record of your declining food spending to see which steps make the biggest difference.

For more information, ideas and simple advice, check out the Green Routine pages at Somerset Waste Partnership, where you can also sign up for the once-a-month mailings with tips and tools: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk

The Walled Gardens are located in the heart of the village of Cannington, and were opened by HRH the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward. Now into their summer opening times - daily, 10am - 4pm – the Gardens have burst into life and are an abundance of colour.

Despite the disappointing weather during the May Spring Fair, which launched the start of the spring/summer season, many people are already enjoying the Gardens or visiting

the Tea Room, Plant Shop and Gift Shop (all of which you don’t need entry to the Gardens to visit), for relaxation and tranquillity.

There is also the opportunity to get hands-on in the gardens, with the practical gardening groups. The Cannington Horticultural Group gives the local community an opportunity to experience the horticultural pleasures of the Gardens and to take advantage of the garden experts' knowledge, joining in with seasonal tasks such as propagation work, willow weaving, composting, to name but a few. The group meets once a month, and no commitment or expertise is required - just turn up on the day and join in! It’s worth checking the website

for dates and details: www.canningtonwalledgardens.co.uk

There are also volunteer sessions which take place every Wednesday, 1.30pm - 4pm. Jayne Alcock (Grounds and Gardens Supervisor) leads the session, providing guidance and support. Your role as a garden volunteer will probably include border work, edging, weeding, hoeing, leaf raking and nursery work amongst other tasks.

After completing twenty hours of voluntary work in the Walled Gardens, you will receive a Walled Gardens' Season Ticket and 10% discount in the Gardens' Tea Rooms and Garden Shop as a thank you for your time and commitment.

trinity fundraising eventTrinity Sports and Leisure has played host to its first sponsored swim, with Bridgwater Amateur Swimming club showcasing their swimming talents to raise money for a very worthwhile cause - The Romanian Vaccination Project.

The sponsored swim was undertaken by 53 members of the swimming club, with the target to swim 1414 lengths - equivalent to the distance in miles between Bridgwater and Brasov, Romania. The club actually exceeded that and swam 1991, with many younger members swimming their very first length!

Swimmers raised over £200 from sponsorship from family and friends for the swim, and another £158 was raised on the night. The money raised will go towards the project which has been set up by two students from the University of Bristol to vaccinate children in the poor villages around Brasov, Romania against pneumonia. One of the founders of the project is a past captain and current member of the swimming club.

Frances Barr from Bridgwater ASC said: “The club was delighted that the event was such a success. We would like to thank all the swimmers and their parents for supporting the evening so wholeheartedly; Bridgwater has

always been a friendly club, with great team spirit, and that showed in the way everyone worked together to raise funds for this deserving project”.

Trinity Sports and Leisure held its first ever gala last month. The state of the art £6.3million facility, funded by Sedgemoor District Council, has become a welcome hub for Bridgwater Amateur Swimming Club (Bridgwater ASC) who led the event.

Competitive swimming returned to Bridgwater after a gap of 50 years since the 1960s’ Lido age. Bridgwater ASC were very proud to host the final round of the Cotswold League against teams from Brockworth, Clevedon and Minehead at the new Trinity Sports and Leisure 25m, 6 lane pool. Competition between all four teams was close, with Minehead ending the evening on top.

Hinkley supply chain Sedgemoor District Council and the Somerset Chamber of Commerce have teamed

up to provide a programme of support to make sure Sedgemoor businesses are ‘Hinkley Ready’ for when the project moves forward.

The programme aims to give local businesses the tools to gear themselves up to bid competitively for contracts and to form part of the supply chain for the proposed multi-billion pound Hinkley Point C project.

Funded by EDF Energy, the programme will include input from national support organisations and experts from the private sector. The programme of support will include

gala news

Chairman of Council Councillor Gill Slocombe with some of the swimmers taking part in the gala at Trinity Sports and Leisure.

The event was attended by 120 swimmers and around 100 spectators, including Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council Cllr Gill Slocombe and Portfolio Holder for Leisure Councillor John Swayne. Also attending were Somerset ASA President Graham Cockill and Regional ASA President elect Ben Batley.

Chair of Bridgwater Swimming Club, Don Symes, said: “The evening was a great success. Tenths of a second can mean the difference between first and last place and results on the night were hard fought. All the swimmers deserve praise for their efforts and we’re looking forward to the competition finals. I would like to thank club members and the staff at 1610 who ensured the evening went smoothly”.

Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council Councillor Gill Slocombe said: “It was a wonderful evening. To see so many swimmers and spectators enjoying this new pool really makes the hard work - which has guaranteed swimming provision in Bridgwater - all worth it. Sedgemoor District Council are proud to have brought competitive swimming back to the town and we look forward to many more events in the future.”

workshops and targeted advice on contracting and tendering, health and safety, standards and accreditation and how to access finance.

The Hinkley Point C development is set to generate £100m a year in the local economy during peak construction and create more than 25,000 jobs. There will be numerous opportunities for local companies from the project and from the inward investment it attracts.

Rupert Cox, Chief Executive for Somerset Chamber of Commerce, said: “This initiative demonstrates great cross-organisation working in order to achieve a unified goal and will also provide a legacy to businesses and prepare them to respond to other potential major projects.”

Sedgemoor businesses are urged to engage with the opportunities associated with Hinkley C and to register on the supply chain portal at www.hinkleysupplychain.co.uk

At April’s meeting, Mary Keily demonstrated ‘Festive

Overture’. Mary gave members and visitors a very enjoyable evening using containers ranging from a Linen Box to a Hurricane Lamp. There were six flower arrangements which were raffled and six lucky ladies took home a design each! Various foliage was used and flowers included Singapore Orchids, Roses, Anthuriums, Scabious, Carnations, Lisianthus and Gerberas.

At each meeting there is usually a sales table, where floral sundries can be purchased, and a plant stall where plants are provided

by members and are very reasonably priced. If you enjoy gardening you would benefit from visiting the meetings to help stock your garden with items suitable for flower arranging. You do not have to be able to arrange flowers - just go along and enjoy the evening!

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month (except July and November), at Westfield Church Hall, West Street, Bridgwater. Everyone is welcome to attend a demonstration evening which commences at 7.30pm. For more information contact Isobel Cameron: [email protected]

The next flower arranging demonstration will be by Shirley Preston, entitled As I Like It, on Tues 11 June - visitors £5 each.

rugby, witnessing some of the largest crowds seen for years at Beggars Brook.

Stress is a normal part of life; how we deal with stress can play a major part in the short and long-term effect it has on our health.

It isn’t always a bad thing, it can act to make us try harder, find our competitive edge, and give us the edge in challenging times.

Sadly for the majority of society, stress and its effects have become a way of life, and when people are carefree and living a life with limited or controlled stressors they are inwardly and outwardly calmer happier people.

We all react differently to stress; some people overeat, drink too much alcohol or smoke excessively in an attempt to help them relax, others overwork, over exercise, and find their brain function is impaired; and as a result become snappy, withdrawn and irritable.

When stress levels reach maximum levels we often avoid doing simple things to lighten

the load, why not try some of these simple ideas to brighten your day:• Reflecting - find and say

some positive affirmations, and dedicate thoughts for the good things in your life.

• You time - find 30 mins a day ‘you time’ this could include; reading a book, having a massage, or having a soak in the bath (you might need to get up early to get quiet time before the rest of the household rises!)

• Increasing happy hormones - we all know being active makes us feel vibrant and we get a boost of serotonin and endorphins. Try playing sport, going for a walk, bike ride or trying out a new group exercise class.

• Nutrition - eating nutritionally smart will help your body to feel balanced. Aim for lots of fruit and veg, and drink lots of water to flush out all the toxins.

• Smiling and laughing - try watching a film that makes you laugh, or listen to happy music.

• Feel good factor - it doesn’t matter what you do, just

choose an activity that makes you feel good, makes you smile and helps you to focus on the positive and good things in your life.

The stress bucket is another simple and easy method to understand what makes you stressed, and which of these things can be removed, delegated or dealt with to make life easier. The stress bucket is simple - draw a bucket on a large sheet of A4 paper, and write down everything in your life that creates stress, then work through them one by one, finding a simple but effective method to make the thing easier.

Stress does not have to overtake your life, if you choose to overcome the triggers and create simple ways to make everyday a little bit calmer. Smiling and laughing is probably the best health cure known to man!By Hannah chaudhri worthey, exercise Health and Lifestyle specialist.
