from the editorWelcome to November’s issue of LocalReach,

Bridgwater. After what seemed like a very long summer, with those warm days lasting right into October, I can see that many people are now in the winter/Christmas mind-set, due to the number of Christmas and winter events I have been asked to share information about in this issue.

I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy this time of year, especially with the various Christmas craft fayres there are around. I enjoy seeing the vast array of works created by many talented people from our area, and being able to buy things a little bit different from the norm, to give as gifts.

It really is a busy time of year, and there are many fundraising events taking place in and around Bridgwater, so as well as having an enjoyable evening or day out, there’s the chance to raise money for some brilliant charities too!

Thanks to everyone who has contributed this month, and I look forward to hearing from you for December’s issue.

Best wishesCatherineDecember issue deadline is Wednesday 12th November 2014 cath davies, LocalReach Community Editor. [email protected]

chedzoy preschoolWe have lots of fun-filled activities planned for this term across all areas of learning and development. We have purchased a new cooker which we tested by making blackberry and apple crumble after we had been blackberry picking, and we are collecting materials to start off our new nature area which will be studied with magnifyng glasses! Our harvest theme explored the importance of gathering some of the food we eat, and we are celebrating carnival and making plans for our Nativity Play and Christmas Party. We utilise both our spacious inside and outside environments so the children have lots of opportunities and having wished good luck to 28 children moving onto primary school, we have spaces available in our preschool. Our toddler group continues to operate alongside the preschool on both Monday and Thursday mornings. We look forward to hearing from you if you are looking for a great Preschool. restoration of town’s cannonBridgwater College’s Engineering and Construction departments have spent months restoring Bridgwater Town’s historical cannon in a project managed by Sedgemoor District Council. Following restoration, the cannon has now been returned to the centre of the Cannon roundabout near the Cross Rifles Public House.

The work included dismantling the existing parts of the cannon by removing all original ironmongery and timber sections and using the existing parts as templates to re-make the cannon base following the original design. The new canon is built from

green oak timbers and formed using traditional hand-tooled methods. The cannon was erected to recognise a forgotten hero, Denis Heron, who rode as one of the 4th

light dragoons in the memorable Charge of the Light Brigade. Three years later, in 1857, the Borough Council petitioned Parliament for the provision of a Russian cannon captured in the Crimea, but in more recent years this has been replaced with a replica, which the District Council now maintains.

seasonal affective disorder (sad) I am focusing this month on how hypnotherapy can help those who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) as Autumn is fully upon us and people who suffer from this condition start to feel the initial impact.

SAD has symptoms much like depression, but it has a clear pattern, starting in Autumn or Winter and stopping in the Spring and Summer. The kinds of things that people might experience include loss of energy, low mood, which is often worse in the morning than later in the day, wanting to socialise less, a kind of need for hibernation, feelings of exhaustion for no real reason, loss of libido and so on.

So how can hypnotherapy help with SAD?Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) can help with many conditions that affect our mental wellbeing, and this includes SAD. During the free initial consultation we explain in detail about how the brain works and why it might ‘behave’ with some people in the way it does during the winter months. The Solution Focused approach encourages people to think in new and more positive ways. By means of imagery as well as suggestion, hypnotherapy also helps people who have SAD to change aspects of their behavior, and refocus their thoughts in more positive ways.Clients are often relieved to learn that there are different ways that the symptoms of SAD can be managed and actually enjoy the process, which often works quite quickly, as well as the results! I have been able to help many reduce their SAD symptoms; it is such an amazingly powerful technique.

get that garden tidy!future fuel: composting will produce something great for next year’s plants - by nick caterWith Halloween just gone, Guy Fawkes and carnivals upon us, and Christmas round the corner, plenty of people in Bridgwater will be thinking about getting ready for winter and the festive season.

In the garden, as growth slows and days get so short, it is about clearing beds, tidying greenhouses, and maybe some light mowing, hedge clipping or pruning. Your compost bin is the place for all but the largest, woodiest garden waste (take that to a recycling centre if not over four inches in diameter). In the warmth, damp darkness of the compost bin, the transformation can begin into a free much, fertiliser, and soil conditioner.

To help produce that helpful future garden ‘fuel’ to put nutrition back into your soil and retain moisture, do try adding a little shredded card to the mix and some foods: fruit and veg peelings, egg shells, coffee grounds and tea bags. In the house and garage, a quick sift and clear, or a deeper clutter bust, can turn up lots of items and materials that need sorting to ensure they are not wasted or end up in landfill.

A set of boxes or bags can help decide what you want to repair, offer on Freecycle or donate to charity, recycle at the kerbside or recycling site, or even prepare to become Christmas gifts. If you find anything to sell, I see that eBay and other online auctions are facing growing competition from Facebook ‘buy, sell, swap’ groups and classified advert sites like Gumtree, though the old postcard-in-a-window still works, as does a quick car boot sale when you have a lot.

And for a bit of seasonal fun to come, what about giving away or swapping some of your finds, from hosting a

swishing party for clothes to a swap meet for household items? For more details of how to recycle more and waste less, including advice on composting, and to order compost bins, visit www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.nick cater is senior communications officer at somerset waste partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in somerset.

winter eating – by Hannah chaudhriNovember always brings excitement for the town with the historic event of the carnival, which brings with it for many an outing out in the cold when often we would be inside warm centrally heated houses.

I always enjoy going out in the cold, with hat, gloves and many layers; but as I walk along, the feeling of warm red cheeks and a ‘Ready Brek’ glow always fills me with joy, as like others the feeling of a full belly and being warm makes me feel secure and content.

Sadly for many the colder months also bring about an undesirable change in their eating habits, as we shift from salads to big cooked meals. I’m always alarmed by the old fashioned view that we have to eat lots of highly calorific fat laden meals to stay warm. The colder months provide a super excuse to get into the kitchen and create some amazing soups, which we can take with us in flasks, on walks, to work, anywhere in fact. I love to experiment in the kitchen, and rarely follow a recipe; juicing has becoming hugely popular in the past few years, and this needn’t be a summer only activity, warm juice = soup!

I’m particularly fond of using left overs, and roast dinners really do provide all the vital ingredients for a super soup. Why don’t you try making a soup with some leftover veggies and even some meat – add a few herbs, spices, onions, and anything else you fancy.

If you’re interested in improving your diet or your family’s meals, please do get in touch: www.tribe-life.co.uk.

somerset rebels speedwaySpeedway riders are the modern-day gladiators of the sporting world, 4 riders per race going head to head on 500cc motorbikes over 4 laps of the shale-based oval track, the bikes accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, faster than an F1 racing car, but have no gears and NO BRAKES!

The Somerset Rebels are one of a number of speedway clubs that operate in the UK from Plymouth in the south to Edinburgh in the north, their Oaktree Arena track being situated just off junction 22 on the M5, they race their home matches most Friday nights throughout the speedway season that operates from mid-March until the end of October.

Formed in just 2000, the Somerset Rebels currently operate in the sport’s Premier League, which is the 2nd tier of racing in the UK, their Oaktree Arena track, which is 300 metres in length, is widely acknowledged to be one of the best speedway tracks in the UK, a fact borne out by the fact that Sky Sports are annual visitors to the track icorder to broadcast one of the Rebels home matches, and will, once again, be bringing their cameras to the Oaktree Arena on Tuesday 11th June.

A speedway meeting comprises 15 heats of pulsating action of what must be one of the most extreme spectator sports in the UK, but it is also one that appeals to fans of all ages, from 1-91!

Somerset meetings get underway at 7.30pm, but from when the gates open at 5.30pm until 7pm fans can enter the pits where you can watch the riders prepare their bikes, take photos and also have a chat to the riders – what other sport can you get ‘up close and personal’ with the main people. Kids can also apply to be meeting mascots or hold birthday parties in the Oaktree Clubhouse adjacent to the track. Looking for a team bonding night out or something different to treat your staff then have a look at the Rebels website to see our offers and discounts or just simply email us.

calming tips, for our firework frenzied pets….Atirakin Pet Taxi & Home Dog Boarding can offer most Pets transport to their Vets, Boarding Kennels, Groomers, and Catteries etc. For busy workers, pensioners or housebound we can take your pet to the vet for you, giving it our full attendance, returning your pet home after appointments, caring for all pets as if they are our own. We are Defra Certificated and animals are insured.November is one of the most stressful months for our pets, whereas our time zone changes immediately; our pet’s dinnertime, loo & sleep time body clock does not! Over-stimulation by firework noise, on unprepared acute hearing, can easily frenzy them! Imagine yourself, hungry, commencing your dinner and out of the blue you are bombarded with the noise of a warzone, with no explanations; you may just imagine your pet’s mind-set? So here are some tips that work for our pets and guests. Try to feed and toilet them an hour earlier than GMT for first two weeks after the clocks go back. Avoid reacting to your pet’s anxiety as that reinforces their fear; encourage a pacing animal to huddle with you and family members. In the wild they would use dens, warrens, ditches and squeeze into the smallest of crevices, wrapping them in a loose cocoon made from light blanket can replicate this. Or, make a den with an indoor kennel, or cardboard boxes in a closed room; bundling structures with unwashed garments, the pheromones from unclean clothes to dogs and cats, especially those used to sleep and relax in, are reassuring, and reinforcing your leadership and protection. Talking loudly when dogs are agitated, makes them believe that you are barking and frightened too; slip their lead on, holding the lead loosely in your hand, will often work as a comforter to them. Good luck. Atirakin 01278786836 www.atirakin.co.uk
