From the editorAnd so we’re into the month of October, which means the beginning of autumnal leaves and darker early evenings, and of course Halloween at the end of the month.

Love it or hate it, I’m sure we’ll see plenty of ‘trick or treaters’ walking the streets of Bridgwater on 31 October. If you have children and want some Halloween fun without the trick or treating, why not head on down to The Walled Gardens of Cannington during the latter half of half term week – they’ve got lots going on around the Gardens, and it’s fun for the adults too!

Of course the day after Halloween, is the town’s biggest event of the year – Bridgwater Carnival! The carnival procession starts at 7pm, and marks the 409th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot.

As usual, there’s so much going on in and around our town, so please do take the time to have a read through the magazine to get the dates in your diaries!Best wishesCatherineOctober issue deadline is Thursday 16th October. Cath Davies, LocalReach Community Editor. [email protected]

Health & Lifestyle - SugarWe are always getting conflicting media messages about the food in our shopping trolleys, and during commercial breaks. I am often irritated by the latest breakfast bar, energy drink or snack pack, which promotes a healthy food on the go. The key ingredient in many of these pre-packed convenience foods is sugar, generally in very large quantities.

Sugar is addictive, whether it be natural (fruit), processed (sweets), or substitute (aspartame), and some scientists would suggest the addiction can be as great as smoking or illegal drugs. Have you ever noticed that when you feel tired or hungry you crave sugary foods? This is because sugar is an addictive toxin to our bodies.

The harmful side effects of excessive sugar consumption, is not only weight gain, but it also affects our body’s natural glucose and insulin production, and makes us more likely to suffer with diabetes. Sugar affects our blood, and this has a dramatic effect on our energy and mood; it gives us a surge in energy, and the crash after the short high can be catastrophic to our productivity, and often results in us reaching out for more sugar to start the blood spiking process all over again.

Eliminating sugar from your diet needn’t be as difficult as you think, by planning your meals and filling up on good natural foods such as vegetables and meats, you may find you are less likely to crave snacks. Breakfast cereals are one of the worst offenders, and if you start the day spiking the blood sugar, you could find yourself spending the majority of the day craving more sugar. Why not try some eggs instead?

Eating clean is a very fashionable term - it really means eat things that you find growing naturally, which is the first few aisles in the supermarket. Your fridge will look full of amazing colours, and it is likely that you will need to spend time preparing meals and creating your own sauces.

My theory is, if you have to chase it, dig it up, or reach up high to pick it, then it’s likely that it’s going to be better for you than what you find in a cardboard box, glass jar or plastic fridge pack.

Football Fun!Homes in Sedgemoor’s successful ‘GOALs’ initiative returned again this year, providing free football coaching sessions to children in Woolavington. The organisation once again paired up with Yeovil Town FC to provide the free sessions, and a total of 32 children aged between 6 and 14 took part. Four children were awarded an extra special achievement award for their contribution to the sessions, and their outstanding skills! Homes in Sedgemoor Chief Executive, Dawn Lang, said: “It was great to see so many children taking part and doing

so well over the course of the two days. The GOALs initiative is always popular and our thanks go to Yeovil Town FC for their support in bringing the programme to Woolavington.”

International Older People’s DayApologies if you’re reading this past the date, but 1st October is International Older People's Day, and Bridgwater Senior Citizens' Forum will be holding an event in the Bridgwater Baptist Church, Little St Mary Street, starting at 2pm. ‘Generations United’ will feature songs and reflections on age and youth. In particular, Bridgwater's Senior Citizens will challenge the notion often aired by politicians and the media, that, by living longer and more healthily, they are depriving younger generations of opportunities and benefits.

Age and youth have so much to learn from each other, and the best way to start is by recognising what unites us. For more information, contact the group’s Chair, Glen Burrows on 07813 562869.

Dress in Yellow if you Dare - Donate £1 and Help us Care! Will you take up the challenge of supporting St Margaret’s Hospice as part of Hospice Care Week? Hospice Care Week takes place between the 6th and 12th October and is an annual awareness raising week to help raise the profile of hospice care across the UK. For over thirty years St Margaret’s has been at the heart of the Somerset community, providing free, specialist care for people and their families who are facing a life limiting illness. It costs us 10 million pounds a year to provide our services; 75% of this comes from charitable income from our community. This cost is only going to rise to meet increasing demand for our services. St Margaret’s currently provides care for approximately 3,200 people per year, and estimates are that by 2030 this figure will rise to 17,000.

Every day our patients and their families face the challenge of a lifetime. We are asking you to take on the challenge, to help us help them, by making a minimum donation of £1 to wear something yellow for a day. Why not make it more daring and set up a competition to see who can be the most creative with their yellow outfit choices!

It couldn’t be easier - get friends, colleagues and students involved and register for our ‘wear it yellow’ pack by calling 01823 365615 or email [email protected]. If you want to take part as an individual you can text YELO11 £1 to 70070 to make your donation.

Driving Down our £12m Landfill BillRecycling right: do not feed food waste to your refuse binNo one likes throwing money away, but that is what Bridgwater residents are doing when Somerset spends £12 million a year landfilling waste, much of which could be easily recycled.

That is one reason why short ‘Recycle More’ trials are now successfully underway in Somerset to explore ways to help householders make big savings by wasting less.

Three clusters of homes in Taunton Deane are helping investigate the kind of items that might, in a few years, be the next to be added to kerbside collections. These include the often-requested plastic pots, tub and trays, including yoghurt pots, margarine and ice cream tubs, and fruit trays.

Also being trialled for kerbside recycling are Tetra Paks and other beverage cartons, plus household batteries and small electrical items, from toasters to irons, phones to hairdryers.

Analysis of trial figures and feedback will assess what effect adding extra items made, to the amounts and quality of new and existing materials being recycled.

The Recycle More trials will also review refuse or recycling frequency, and different containers to see if these could make a significant difference. Most important will be the impact on refuse levels, as less rubbish in the bins will help cut Somerset's multi-million pound annual landfill bill.

Considered as part of the long-term planning of waste services from 2016 at the earliest, the Recycle More trials will not lead to any immediate changes, but Somerset Waste Partnership managing director Steve Read says the results of the Recycle More trials will be fascinating once

assessed in 2015. He added, “Evidence from the Recycle More trials will help develop efficient, cost-effective services that are good for the environment and good for Bridgwater.

“Our research shows that the average refuse bin could be 50% lighter if Bridgwater households used their existing kerbside recycling boxes and food waste container to the full. Most people in Bridgwater recycle and find it is simple, rewarding, and takes very little time."By Nick Cater - Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Sedgemoor RamblersAutumn is here and a lovely time of year to be out walking in the countryside and enjoying the changing colours. We’ve enjoyed walks across Somerset during the summer, including a Summer Outing walking along the coast in the Ilfracombe area, a Summer Tea and a Walk Back in Time on the Quantocks.

Our autumn programme is now available from Tourist Information Offices and on our website www.sedgemoorramblers.co.uk. Our main walking day is Sunday but we have popular monthly, shorter walks on Saturdays throughout the winter months. We will be holding our AGM again at Fyne Court following a walk in the morning - a chance to find out what has been going on in our group and what is planned for the year ahead, so anyone interested in walking with us would be welcome.

Sedgemoor Ramblers is a group within Ramblers. New walkers are invited to walk a few times with the group before becoming a member. We are a friendly and sociable group who share a love of the outdoors and we would be pleased to hear from you. Our Membership Secretary, Esmé can also send you a programme and answer any queries - ring 01278 784190.

Your say on how your council tax is spent…Sedgemoor District Council wants residents to have their say on how Sedgemoor District Council should spend its proportion of the council tax, in its annual budget consultation. The Council continues to work within a very tight budget and will be reviewing

its services to make sure that every penny is spent wisely. SDC gets approximately 9p in the £ from each pound paid in council tax, the other 91p being split between Somerset County Council, the Police, Fire and Rescue services and Parish/Town councils.

Sedgemoor has been carrying out an annual budget consultation exercise for several years, in order to ensure the views of the public are considered when making decisions regarding budgets and priorities. Sedgemoor has been successful with Budget Consultation in previous years, but is looking to sustain that success and improve further in order to give as large and wide a group as possible the opportunity to participate and have their say. The consultation exercise involves 5,000 questionnaires being sent out to a random sample of Sedgemoor residents. The questionnaire will also be available to complete online at: http://www.sedgemoor.gov.uk/budgetconsultation. The consultation period will run until 24th October 2014. For further information or to request a questionnaire please call 0845 408 2540.

Bridgwater Flower ClubThe next flower arranging demonstration is on Tuesday 9th September at Westfield Church Hall (opposite the Fair Field), commencing at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm). Nick is very good at weaving Phormium leaves and creating different items with them; in fact he made a handbag and hat solely with woven Phormium leaves for Taunton Show a couple of years ago. We would be very pleased to see anyone who would like to come and watch the demonstration.

Bridgwater CarnivalSeeing is believing – don’t miss this amazing carnival on Saturday 1st November!2014 sees the 409th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot and the failed attempt of Guy Fawkes to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Ever since the conspirator was discovered by the guards of King James I on that cold November night, Bridgwater has celebrated his failure in its own unique way. These celebrations have grown into a massive, spectacular evening carnival – regarded by many as one of the largest illuminated parades in the world.

Approximately 60 carnival carts, some as big as 100ft long, 16.5ft high and 11ft wide and lit by thousands of lights, wind their way through the centre of this historic town, creating an explosive atmosphere of light, sound and movement. Accompanying these carts are groups and individual masqueraders on foot, marching bands and majorettes, bringing their own carnival flavour to the festivities.

The big parade starts at 7pm and takes over two hours to pass any one viewing point on the 2½ mile route, and the carnival is brought to a dramatic finale with an amazing firework display, in the middle of the town (the squibbing).

During the carnival daytime there will be a whole host of top class entertainment taking place in the town centre to keep all of the family entertained.

The build up to our carnival weekend starts on Friday 31st October, with Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival’s ‘Grand Firework Display’. This glittering fireworks display has proved popular in the past with spectators and has been well-supported by people in and around the Sedgemoor area.

Bridgwater Carnival is something to be rightfully very proud of. For more information, see www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk or visit our Carnival Centre, High Street, Bridgwater (01278 428220).

Trick or treat? The Walled Gardens of Cannington is a real treat for the whole family at Halloween. Over two days, the Gardens will be home to pumpkins ready to be carved, trails to be explored and fancy dress costumes to be spooked by! Children can run around (closely followed by the adults!) and discover the many areas of the Gardens, finding pumpkins on the trail and creating their own carvings.

The activities aren’t just for children though, at this very popular event adults can wander around the historic settings, set within a medieval priory in the heart of Cannington. It is said that a network of tunnels exist beneath the Gardens, leading to various spots in the village so that the nuns and nearby monks could meet in secret. Over the years many local stories have survived concerning ghostly visitations by nuns. There is also a tomb for Bishop Peter Bernadine Collingridge who died in 1829 located in one of the gardens, which adds to the ghostly feel at this time of year!

Tickets to this extremely popular Halloween event cost £5 per child, accompanying adult per child, free, which includes entrance to the Gardens, drink of squash, a biscuit and a pumpkin (whilst stocks last)! To avoid disappointment, tickets can be purchased in advance from the Walled Gardens’ Gift Shop or online at store.bridgwater.ac.uk. We look forward to seeing you!

If you would like more information about The Walled Gardens of Cannington please visit http://www.canningtonwalledgardens.co.uk/home/, telephone 01278 655042 or email [email protected].

PUMPKIN TRAIL & CARVINGThurs 30 & Fri 31 October, 10am – 3pmFollow the trail through the gardens, find a little something – maybe a pumpkin! Carve out a mouth, some eyes and a nose, make it spooky or smiley – anything goes!

£5 per child - to include drink, Halloween biscuit and pumpkin. Buy your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment! Adults gain free entry to the gardens when accompanying a child under 16. For further details visit our website or find us on Facebook and Twitter.

Somerset Rebels SpeedwaySpeedway riders are the modern-day gladiators of the sporting world, 4 riders per race going head to head on 500cc motorbikes over 4 laps of the shale-based oval track, the bikes accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, faster than an F1 racing car, but have no gears and NO BRAKES!

The Somerset Rebels are one of a number of speedway clubs that operate in the UK from Plymouth in the south to Edinburgh in the north, their Oaktree Arena track being situated just off junction 22 on the M5, they race their home matches most Friday nights throughout the speedway season that operates from mid-March until the end of October.

Formed in just 2000, the Somerset Rebels currently operate in the sport’s Premier League, which is the 2nd tier of racing in the UK, their Oaktree Arena track, which is 300 metres in length, is widely acknowledged to be one of the best speedway tracks in the UK, a fact borne out by the fact that Sky Sports are annual visitors to the track icorder to broadcast one of the Rebels home matches, and will, once again, be bringing their cameras to the Oaktree Arena on Tuesday 11th June.

A speedway meeting comprises 15 heats of pulsating action of what must be one of the most extreme spectator sports in the UK, but it is also one that appeals to fans of all ages, from 1-91!

Somerset meetings get underway at 7.30pm, but from when the gates open at 5.30pm until 7pm fans can enter the pits where you can watch the riders prepare their bikes, take photos and also have a chat to the riders – what other sport can you get ‘up close and personal’ with the main people. Kids can also apply to be meeting mascots or hold birthday parties in the Oaktree Clubhouse adjacent to the track. Looking for a team bonding night out or something different to treat your staff then have a look at the Rebels website to see our offers and discounts or just simply email us.

So why not give it a try, we know that you won’t be disappointed………
