Matthew Depewremained remarkably calmand told me that he andabout 20 others (later found to be eighteentotal)had run into the office in the kitchen and werehiding there. Thegrouping of rapidshots were as though allfourseriesof shots were directed at onetarget. The suspects were so close to Depew and his group that I could hear thesuspect(s) loading and"racking" theirweapon overthephone. Depew wasveryquietly descn"bing tome thatthe suspectswere'hooting anythingthatmovedor madenoise. At thatpointDepew wascertainhe wasgoingto dieandaskedmeto tellhis father he loved him. I constantlyhadDepew maintain control and toldhim thatifthe gunmen cameintotheroom everyone should remainquietami not talk. I toldDepewto holdthephoneup andaskthegunmen to speaktomeIf they carne inside. I also directedDepewto plananattackIfnecessary andtohave several students try and bitthegunman withchairs ifitwasapparent hewas goingto shoot. Depew volunteered to be thepersonto tryand getthe shotgun ifit came to that.Depew helped mekeepeveryone inhisgroupquietanddownfortheemire time, even though whenwhatwaslater learnedtobegunsandbombs were going off around them, twoof Depew'sgroup gotso scared theytried to runoutforhelp. Atonepointanother person tried toget in the doorbut itwasunknown whetherthis personwasa suspector not. Hegavehis nametoDepewbut evenDepewrealized thatstudentmightbe a hostage of thegunmen andDepewmaintained controlof thegroupanddidnotmove thebarricades to allowthis personinside.During thetimethe SWAT teams were moving in,themoodin room became verydifficult withtwomentally challenged members ofthe group trying to yelloutandgetoutoftheroom. Again, Depewhelped directhis group to maintainorderuntil they could be removed safely. Depew constantlyfollowed mydirections to have the group breathe easyand remainquiet, nomatterwhat happened. At several points when it soundedlike thesuspecns)were not in theareaDepewmade thegrouphush up when they felt the situationwas over andstoned talking loud, laughing, etc. Due to theknowledge Depew learnedfromhis father, a former DenverSWAT member, Depewwasable todescribe to thegroupwhatwould be happening withthepoliceandwhy itwastakingso longto gelthe group to safety. I added information for Depew as neededbut hemaintained a professionalmanner atall times. Atonepoint, early on in the situation, Depew spoke withtwoof thegroupthatarefriends of mydaughtertoanswer myquestions aboutwhether mydaughter had beenshot. Thatallowed all of us to work together witha common bond to survive thatcontinuedthroughout theincident.JeffersonCountyCommunications assisted me during theentiretimeandgaveme thesuggestionto getphone numbers of the eighteen people'sfamily members so theycouldbe told everyone wasalright. Thatsuggestionboughtme somevaluable time andhelpedkeepthe groupbusyandquietwhile officersworked to clear the school. I had already hadDepew pass a paper around witheveryone writing downtheir names andhad giventhis information toJefferson Countyso I hadhimadd phone numbers. (I latertriedto call everyone's family on the list but only spoke withtwoorthree. Everyone elsehadleftfor theschool and could not be reached byphone.)
