My 5 year old son had his first official rugby game! We made a family affair of it, with grandparents & cousins, all of us at the game, cheering them along. Although his two rugby games were only 5 minutes each, he was … THE MAN! As I think back I can’t help but smile. The boys huddling together discussing their tactics. Oh boy, the tackling, scrumming and yes, waving at their moms! Afterwards I was listening to some of the conversations, “Mom, did I win?”, “Dad, did you see me tackle!” The self-confidence of these boys was bigger than them. Only 5 years old but they have the whole wide world open to them! Read more about self-confidence on page 8. Raising confident children It takes confidence to be a kid. Whether going to a new school or stepping up to bat for the first time, kids face a lot of uncharted territory.Naturally, parents want to instill a can-do attitude in their kids so that they’ll bravely take on new challenges and, over time, believe in themselves. While each child is a little different, parents can follow some general guidelines to build kids’ confidence.Self-confidence rises out of a sense of competence. In other words, kids develop confidence not because parents tell them they’re great, but because of their achievements, big and small. When kids achieve something, whether it’s brushing their own teeth or riding a bike, they get a sense of themselves as able and capable.Building self-confidence can begin very early. When babies learn to turn the pages of a book or toddlers learn to walk, they are getting the idea “I can do it!” With each new skill and milestone, kids can develop increasing confidence.Parents can help by giving kids lots of opportunities to practice and master their skills, letting kids make mistakes and being there to boost their spirits. Respond with interest and excitement when kids show off a new skill, and reward them with praise when they achieve a goal or make a good effort.With plentiful opportunities, good instruction, and lots of patience from parents, kids can master basic skills — like tying their shoes and making the bed. Then, when other important challenges present themselves, kids can approach them knowing that they have already been successful in other areas.

The key to parenting success? Tip #1 – If you love your kids—put yourself first!Far too many children are living with a mom who is unhappy, frazzled and stressed out. Children flourish when they are raised in a home with happy, balanced parents. Tip #2 – If you are married—put your marriage before your kids! A key to good parenting is to have a happy marriage in which your children can thrive—a partnership which they can use as a model for their future relationships. Tip #3 – Cherish your children. Hug your children at least three times a day. Tell them often how grateful you are to have the opportunity to be their parent and to become a better woman—and mother—for it! Tip #4 – Teach your kids to fish (rather than fish for them). Many moms (and dads) do everything for their kids. This only robs their children of the opportunity to learn self-reliance—a vital key to their self-esteem. One of the best things you can do is to help your kids learn how to do for themselves. Tip #5 – Focus on what you like (instead of what you don’t like). If children aren’t being appreciated and aren’t getting attention for what they do well—and when they behave well—you better believe they will learn to get attention for not behaving.
