BASILICA OF ST. MARY STAFF

Oremus pro invicem. “Let us pray for each other.”

Father Edward C. Hathaway

THE HOLY FAMILY Today, Sunday, December 30 we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. On Tuesday, January 1, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation. (Mass times for the Solemnity are listed on the left and on our parish website.) Both of these holy celebrations remind us that family life is rooted in the unconditional love of God as witnessed by the Holy Family. May they intercede for our own families, helping us to be signs of hope for a culture of love in this New Year. May Mary and Joseph inspire us to love and adore Christ as they did – with purity, humility and devotion.

The Family Prayer (May be recited after dinner every night. Place it on your table

with the salt and pepper shakers as a reminder!)

Our Father, we thank You for Your love and Your many blessings, especially for the precious gift of each other.

Help us to show our gratitude by loving each other as You love us.

Make us understanding and patient with one another, quick to admit our failings and ask forgiveness, generous in sharing the joy and strength we can give each other.

Father, give our family lively faith and the courage to share it with those around us.

Direct us to the state in life You plan for each of us, and help us to use Your gifts to serve You. We entrust our family to Your fatherly care.

Preserve us from the corruption of the modern world and help us draw closer daily to You and to each other,

until we come to share with You the joys of heaven. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, help us to be a holy family.

Amen.

5th SUNDAY ROSARY FOR VOCATIONS Following the 5 p.m. Mass today (Sunday, December 30), I encourage you to participate in the 5th Sunday Rosary for Vocations program sponsored by our Knights of Columbus. The Knights, our Basilica Rosary Society and our RCIA group will gather at 6 p.m. in the Fr. Rankin House at 314 Duke Street to pray the rosary to seek Our Lady’s help in increasing vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated religious life. What a wonderful way to usher in the New Year!

By [the rosary] we give to Jesus all we can possibly give Him, and in the most perfect manner,

that is, through Mary’s hands. – St. Louis de Montfort

This Week’s Liturgical Calendar December 31. St. Sylvester I, Pope. Bishop of Rome (314-335) who dedicated the Lateran Basilica. One of the first non-martyrs venerated as a saint. January 1. Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. The Church dedicates the first day of our secu-lar year to Mary under her title “Mother of God.” This title was officially affirmed by the Council of Ephesus in 431 although Mary had been called “Theotokos” (The Bearer of God) since the very early days of the Church. January 3. St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazi-anzen, Bishops and Doctors of the Church. Basil was a hermit who became bishop of Caesarea in Cap-padocia. Noted for his learning; source of Eucharistic Prayer IV. Gregory was Patriarch of Constantinople; noted for his knowledge of sacred Scripture. January 3. The Most Holy Name of Jesus. Celebrated in the Church, at least at local levels, since the end of the 15th century. Commemorates the naming of the child Jesus; as recounted in the Gospel read that day: "At the end of eight days, when He was circumcised, He was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb." Devotion to the Holy Name was promoted by St. Bernardine of Siena. January 4. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Religious. Raised Episcopalian; wife and mother of five children. Founded (1812) the Sisters of Charity, first congregation for women religious in the United States, devoted to the education of the poor and teaching in parochial schools. First native-born U.S. citizen canonized (1975). January 5. St. John Neumann, Bishop. Missionary to the United States from Bohemia who became bishop of Philadelphia. Known for his holiness and learning; pro-moter of parochial schools. First American bishop to be canonized (1977).

From your St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) As we finish 2018, we SVdP volunteers remind ourselves of the many miracles our patroness, the Blessed Mother, bestowed on us this past year as carried out our ser-vice to the poor. This week and next we will relate a few examples. When a single mom with two kids in dire financial straits faced eviction, we found the email address of the regional manager of the corporation that owned the apartment complex. I sent him an email describing the situation, providing my phone number, and he called back within minutes. Saying he read the email to his wife while they were having break-fast at their home in Florida, he commented that his wife, a SVdP volunteer at their parish, told him Our Lady was telling her this poor single mom must be helped. He promised to instruct the local staff to find an affordable apartment and waive the $3,500 penalty for breaking the lease. Responding to an appeal, St. Mary parishioners and SVdP volunteers helped move this family at no cost to them. This mom now truly believes Our Lady is guiding her…and indeed she is. Let us all consecrate ourselves to and seek guidance from Our Lady in 2019.

Blessings to all, Jim Larocco, [email protected]
