Prayer Before Mass

Come Holy Spirit and quiet my heart and my head, as I gather with my friends and neighbors to celebrate Mass. I am saint and sinner. Open my ears to Your words. Open my mouth in prayer and song. Open my eyes to see Your mystery in symbol and sign. Open my heart in love for You and my neighbor. Quiet the thoughts and distrac ons that will keep me from prayer. Strengthen me to take the Mass into my life this week. Amen.

Notes from Fr. Joe Wormek As we approach a new year, and a new dec‐ade, there will be many things which will chal‐lenge us to think about the future. We know

that we cannot change the past, and hopefully, we learn from our mistakes for the future. We should make sure that we have made peace and have forgiven for past mistakes. As much as we should do to plan for the future, we cannot forget to focus on the present. Each day and each situa on is a gi from the Lord. We must treat each day and each opportunity as a gi and not be distracted by the future, when we are in the present with someone. These days, one of the big distrac ons are our phones, tablets, iPads and computers. We can spend so much

me on them and do not focus on the people who are present to us. So what kinds of thoughts do you have about star ng a new year and a new decade? Are you going to make any kind of goals, or because the lack of success in previous years, you are not making any goals or promises? Goals do give us direc on and focus! One aspect of our lives which we can all do is pray. Prayer is a reliance on God and not being self‐reliant. Prayer every day is le ng the Lord be part of our life and our journey. Do not forget to thank the Lord o en, because we are so blessed. Happy New Year!!!!

Thanks for all you do!!!

Prayers of the FaithfulThat through prayer and love, our family rela onships put us on the path to holiness.

Stewardship Reflec on “Wives, be subordinate to your husbands…Husbands, love your wives…Children, obey your parents in everything…Fathers, do not provoke your children…” (Colossians 3:18‐21)

Pope Francis said that families, through their life of prayer and love, become "schools of true human growth." Being credible witnesses of Chris an love, especially that of family members, exerts the most posi ve influence on our children. We are all children of God, let us pray and love each other as God, Our Father, does for us.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! –– Spiritual Leadership

Joseph is a model of spiritual leadership. Humility and obedi‐ence are not things that are praised in our culture today. But, remember, our goal is not possessing more things on earth, rather our goal is eternal life with God! Spiritual warfare is real. Through silence, we are able to discern God’s will for us and our families. Studies show that when dad takes his faith seriously, so do his children. Men, the best thing we can do for our fami‐lies is to be the men God is calling us to be, to be the spiritual leaders for our families. The best gi we can give our families is to teach them how to pray.

Volunteers Needed Every Friday at 10:00 am, a Mass or Communion Service is held at Grandview Healthcare Center here in Washington. Assis‐tance is needed to bring residents to the place where the ser‐vice is being held and then returning them to their rooms a er the service. This usually entails pushing a wheelchair or helping someone walk to their des na on. Volunteers are needed from 9:30‐ 10:45. If you can help, please contact Bonnie Riegel at 636‐239‐3008.

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph

One theme common to all three readings today is obedience. Sirach commends the son who obeys his father. St. Paul tells children to obey their parents “in everything.” And the Gospel shows Joseph obedient to the warnings of the angel. Yet all three put obedience in terms of a larger rela onship. Sirach says that obedience is part of what makes a happy family. As we saw last Sunday, it shows trust in the one who is obeyed. Children trust that their parents have good reason for telling them to do something. Children also learn both discipline and how to contribute to family life. Spouses trust each other not to ask them to do something harmful. Obedience is also a sign of respect for an older family member. Americans tend to look at older people as if they were useless, but Sirach reminds us of the wisdom they can share with us. St. Paul con nues this theme in the second reading. He shows how love of Christ transforms a family. When he talks about wives being subordinate and husbands loving them, he means that husbands and wives should defer to each other and love each other. Children and parents have du es to each other: Children are to obey parents and parents are to be reasonable and loving. Parents might look at the Gospel for support in encouraging obedience. Joseph obeyed the messages from the angel and saved the life of the infant Jesus. So families can learn that stressing obedience can protect the child as well as teach. Par‐ents can also remind children that God asks for obedience for our good, not on a whim. When we obey God’s law, we learn to trust God more deeply and to appreciate that God’s law enables us to live more freely. As children we think that rules restrict us, but as we mature, we learn that we are more re‐stricted by our misguided desires and beliefs. We learn to ad‐just those desires to be in line with God’s plan for us. We grow by replacing misguided beliefs (i.e., that material things bring true happiness, that revenge is sweet, etc.) with faith in a lov‐ing God who wants the best for us and who doesn’t magically take away our sufferings, but supports us through them.
