From the Pastor’s Desk

“Me and my drum.” What if that really is all you have? What if you and your drum are the only gifts you have, to offer to a King?

For some reason, of all the carols that have been surrounding us, the tune that has kept getting my atten-tion this Christmas is “The Little Drummer Boy”. It’s really more about Epiphany than Christmas. Not exactly a classic in the traditional sense, it was written just in 1941, becoming famous when recorded (by the Trapp Family Singers) in 1955. Since then it has been recorded by quite a diverse crew of performers, including Bing Crosby, Johnny Cash, Andy Williams, The Supremes, Joan Baez, Stevie Wonder, and Jimi Hendrix. Since 1970, it has been recorded by at least 130 other performers, including Bob Dylan and the Brady Bunch. Who would have thought?

“Me and my drum.” With others bringing gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh, he was there, ragged and poor, holding only his drum. And we don’t even know if he was any good! Maybe he was so bad at playing his little drum that the ox and lamb were struggling to keep time with him, and even Mary was a little sorry that she had nodded. Maybe he wasn’t all that tall or handsome, he wasn’t rich, or particularly witty or clever, or en-tertaining in any way. Still, he stood there, in the presence of the King, and played his drum.

How often do we look at what we have, or who we are, or what we do, and shrink back into the corner, afraid to approach the King? How often have we felt that because it isn’t perfect, or unique, or better than every other one, it somehow will not please? What if all I had was just “me and my drum”, and I went ahead and played.

“Then he smiled at me, . . . Me and my drum.” I didn’t play that well. I’m not that good. My drum is old, and beat up. Why did he smile at me and my drum? Perhaps it was because I simply played my best for him. Perhaps it was because he loved and cherished me before I even picked up a drumstick. Perhaps he smiled just at the sight of his beloved one, come to visit, come to listen, to learn, to worship. “I played my best for him.”

In that beating of one’s drum, and the smile offered in return, do we not discover the meaning of mercy? Unearned, undeserved, still came the smile, of approval, of acceptance, of communion. St. Paul: It is precisely in this way that Christ proves his love for us, that while we were still sinners, he died for us. While we were still sin-ners, he emptied himself, embracing humanity in humility, taking on our human nature, born of the Virgin, then dying and rising that we might live, while we were still sinners. Mercy.

“Me and my drum.” Maybe it’s enough.
