This publication covers the Apple App Store for iPad, Apple App Store for iPhone, AppleMac App Store, BlackBerry App World, GetJar, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store,

Palm App Catalog, and Windows Phone 7 Marketplace in the United States in June 2011.

The major findings are:

• The average selling price of games declined by 28% over the last year, while the

revenue generated by the most successful freemium games increased tenfold during

this period in the Apple App Store for iPhone.

• The presence of virtual currencies within games is one of the main reasons behind

the popularity and monetization success of in-app purchases. 35% of the 300 mostpopular free games in June use some sort of virtual currencies to monetize in the

Apple App Store for iPhone.

• Looking at the 300 most popular paid for applications, 72% of downloads are

generated by games while the remaining 28% of downloads are generated by

applications other than games in the Apple App Store for iPhone.

• The total revenue generated by top grossing games increased by 79% year-on-year

in the Apple App Store for iPhone.

• A small number of publishers dominate total game downloads: ten publishersaccount for more than half of all downloads among the 300 most popular paid

games in the Apple App Store for iPhone.

• Notwithstanding the popularity of games, the growth rate of the number of 

applications other than games is higher than the growth rate of the number of 

games in most stores. The number of games has increased faster than other apps

only in the Apple App Store for iPhone, the Apple App Store for iPad and GetJar, but

the growth rate for games in other stores is lower than for other applications.

AVERAGE SELLING PRICE FOR GAMES DECLINED OVER THE LAST YEAR

This month’s publication focuses on games in the mobile app stores. There are

numerous success stories of mobile games in the media, including Doodle Jump, Angry

Birds, Cut the Rope and Infinity Blade to name a few. This report aims to analyze the

overall success of mobile games during the period June 2010 to June 2011.

Utilizing collected transactional data, we performed an extensive analysis of downloads

of games for the Apple App Store for iPhone in the United States. ‘Games’ is the single

most popular category in the Apple App Store for iPhone, and of all downloads generated

by top 300 overall free applications in June, 56% are game downloads. This number

is even higher for paid applications: 72% of all downloads generated by the top 300

overall paid are game downloads, and only 28% of downloads are generated by other

applications.

The average selling price of the top 300 games has declined during the past year. The

average selling price was $2.01 in June 2010, however it has since declined by 28% to

$1.44 as of June 2011.

FREEMIUM GAMES NOW GENERATE MAJORITY OF REVENUE OF TOP

GROSSING GAMES

During this same period however, in-app purchases have become huge. One year ago,

freemium games (free games with featuring in-app purchases) generated only 8% of the

revenue of top grossing games. As of June 2011, 52% of all the revenue of top grossing

games is generated by freemium games. This implies that the revenue generated by top

freemium games increased more than tenfold in this period, given the fact that the total

revenue of top 200 grossing games increased by 79% in one year.

One of the main reasons for the increase in freemium revenue is the increasing popularity

of virtual currencies. During the first six months of 2011 (from January to June), the

proportion of the 300 most popular free games that used virtual currencies increasedfrom 24% to 35%. An obvious example here is the highest grossing game in June, Tap

Pet Hotel. This game monetized just by its virtual currencies ‘Treats’ and ‘Coins’.

A small number of publishers dominate total game downloads when we look at the 300

most popular games only. The ten most popular publishers of free games generate

27% of all top 300 free game downloads, while the 10 most popular publishers of paid

games generate 54% of all top 300 paid game downloads. The most notable of these ten

paid game publishers is the indie developer Andreas Illiger. Using just one game – Tiny

Wings – he managed to be among the 10 most popular game publishers, leaving behind

publishers like Gameloft, Disney and SEGA.

An important reason for the difference in downloads generated by top ten publishers

for free and paid games is the higher turnover rate among the top 300 free games than

for paid games. A total of 685 free games published by 443 publishers have had a top

300 game position during June, while only 504 paid games published by 249 publishers

have had a top 300 game position. This shows that it is harder for new publishers of 

paid games to become successful than it is for new publishers of free games. This

doesn’t mean that it is impossible for new game developers to monetize: as shown

above, free games generate a larger share of revenue of top grossing games than paid

games.

GAMES: THE MOST POPULAR CATEGORY IN ALL STORES EXCEPT APP WORLD

Games are not just popular in the Apple App Store for iPhone. In all stores, ‘games’

is the most popular category among the top overall applications with the exception

of BlackBerry App World (where themes are more popular). ‘Games’ is also the most

popular category in BlackBerry App World when we look solely at the BlackBerry App

World for PlayBook instead of BlackBerry App World for all devices. The popularity of the

games category for iPhone is most extreme compared to other stores: over half of the

most popular applications in the Apple App Store for iPhone are games.

The proportion of games among the top applications is larger than the proportion of 

games among all available applications for all stores. This suggests game development

for smartphones has a lot of potential.

GROWTH OF GAMES ONLY HIGHER THAN OTHER APPS IN APPLE APP STORE

AND GETJAR

The above graph shows the growth rate of games and other apps from January to June

2011. It reveals that despite the popularity and potential of games, the growth rate

of the number of applications other than games is higher than the growth rate of the

number of games in most stores.

The number of games has increased faster than other apps in the Apple App Store for

iPhone, the Apple App Store for iPad and GetJar. However, in the Apple App Store for

iPhone and iPad the difference in growth rates of games and other apps is small. The

growth rate for games in all other stores is lower than it is for other applications. The

difference between the growth of games and other applications is the largest in the

Windows Phone 7 Marketplace: the number of available games increased by 149% while

applications other than games increased by 266%. This is quite remarkable especially

considering the popularity of games on this platform: 43% of the 300 most popular free

and paid applications are games, and among the most popular paid apps, the first 19

most popular apps are all games.
