What are the pro’s and con’s of using an AMC?The Con’s of using and AMC

1 Less direct control over staffing decisions and allocation of time and resources

2 Depends on the ability and skill of the AMC management and ownership to deliver results

3 Staff have a dual duty of responsibility; to the association client as well as to the AMC

The Pro’s of using and AMC

1 Access to a broad team of professionals and technology solutions

2 A contractual relationship that eliminates the obligations of being an employer

3 Can be a more cost effective solution for associations

How does an AMC differ from a PCO that offers a “Secretariat”?

An AMC is primarily focused on the governance and management of the core association membership services which may or may not include the management of an annual conference and other events.

A PCO is primarily focused on the organization of conferences and meetings while also providing a headquarters and membership services.

Why are associations turning to 3rd party service providers?

There is a global trend towards outsourcing.

This is a risk management approach, avoiding to make commitments to full time staff in uncertain economic conditions.

Outsourcing to 3rd party providers is also a part of management strategy to outsource where ever possible as a standard business practice.

How should ICCA members think about AMC’s ?• Non-US service providers and destinations have an

extremely low profile in the US association market (Canada and Mexico are notable exceptions).

• Many US associations have international meetings and events (even those associations that might be thought of as ‘US centric’).

• It is incredibly difficult for US based associations to identify, qualify and select international partners, providers and venues.

• AMC’s can be excellent contacts and partners for international suppliers and venues, providing greater visibility to the US market
