It is always essential to check whetherexisting bituminous coatings aresound and have a good bond to thesubstrate, before commencing thewaterproofing works. Any loose or friable particles, flaking areas or othercontaminants must be removed.

If in doubt as to the existing materialscondition, always decide on itsremoval.

Sound bitumen waterproofing materials are prepared for refurbishment with a new coating,

by cleaning with high pressurewater jetting. The highest exposurestresses will occur at the base andthe old waterproofing shouldalways be completely removed herein every case, back to the soundmasonry substrate.

In the highly stressed area at the bottom, theold waterproofing is completely removed backto the sound masonry substrate.

Any edges or corners of the foundations arechamfered so that there are no sharp arrises.Any loose or friable particles or other contaminants are removed ie by high pressure water jetting.

The Kiesol primer is applied uniformly byspray. Highly absorbent substrates are pre-dampened to reduce suction.

DOUBLE SECURITY FOR THE FOUNDATION TOWALL JUNCTIONS

External waterproofing ground contact – Foundation/Wall junctions

The Remmers waterproofing systemfor the foundation to wall junctionscan be flexible or mineral dependingon the requirements.

The options are highly refined, bitumen waterproofing with 1 or 2component versions in rapid or

normal setting grades. All are highly sulphate resistant. Tested solutionswith Remmers waterproof rendersgive reliable protection, even in thesplash zones. The ground contactfoundation waterproofing must overlap the wall waterproofing by 20cm minimum.

This is also tested because a goodbond in these overlapped areas alsoprevents any possible under seepage or water penetration.

THE SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONSFrom the waterproofing to the rendering

Kiesol is applied to at least 30 cm aboveground level and to at least 20 cm belowground level by spray.

Within the Kiesol open time, the bond coat ofSulfatex Grout is applied by brush.

All rough areas and surface defects are levelled with the Waterproofing Filler ‘wet on wet’.

3

The waterproofing is achieved by applying atleast two coats of Sulfatex Grout by brush.

The Remmers ‘spritz’ bond coat is sprayedinto the final wet slurry coat covering it completely.

The ground contact waterproofing with Profi Tight must overlap up the masonry wallwaterproofing with Sulfatex Grout by at least20 cm.

MAKE THE WEAK POINTS STRONGExternal waterproofing for ground contact – penetration detailing

The greater the exposure stress, themore care must be taken with thewaterproofing details in the mostsensitive areas. Openings for penetrations such as pipe entry ducts

are obviously amongst these and aretherefore a potential “weak point”.With Remmers system approach thepipe flange remains reliably water-tight in all conditions. When the bond

slurry coat is dry, the pipe is fitted and then the flange is securelybonded to the substrate, securing the pipe and the waterproofing system long term.

The substrate must be clean, dry and dustfree. Fix the pipe to prevent it moving whenthe pipe flange is fitted.

Apply the adhesive on both the edges of thepipe flange and the substrate then bondtogether.

23

The easiest and most efficient procedure is tosimply brush the water-stopping strip into thecoating.

On damp substrates the waterstop can first beembedded in the Remmers slurry coatingbefore being brushed with the bitumen water-proofing layers.

BRUSH THE LAMINATED JOINTSTRIP INTO THE REMMERS BITUMINOUS WATERPROOFINGLAYERS

ALTERNATIVELY IT CAN BEBRUSHED INTO THE ELASTOGROUT 1 K

2

The flexible central section of the waterstopmust not be overcoated with the water-proofing materials.

COMPLETED INSTALLATION OF THE REMMERS WATER-STOPPING JOINT STRIP

3

TO ENSURE THEY STAY FLEXIBLY WATERPROOFExternal waterproofing for ground contact– building movement joints

All of the existing movement joints in the building structure require special treatment. They should be waterproofed within the waterproofing

system by the Remmers water-stopping strip. This special strip hasa central elastic ‘tensile’ zone andthe strip can be incorporated in

either the Remmers slurry seals orthe Remmers high build bitumenwaterproofing systems.

KIESOL SYSTEMS: PROVEN FOR OVER 50 YEARS

Internal waterproofing

Internal waterproofing systems areused if exterior waterproofing isimpossible or uneconomic due to thetype of construction etc. The decisionon the waterproofing cost and effortrequired obviously depends mainlyon the subsequent exposure and thebuildings intended use.

Kiesol internal waterproofing systems are ideal for the increased

requirements of basements andother below ground areas of buildings today. All of the four different grades of waterproofingaccording to British Standard BS8102:1990 can easily be obtainedwith our systematic approach thesystems perform so reliably thatareas previously only useable asstorage or car parking can becomeadditional living space. For smaller

areas in particular, Remmers supplies the fastest curing internalwaterproofing system on the market(see P. 30). Through this time savingand just a single site visit, smallerareas such as domestic basementscan also be economically upgradedprofessionally.

CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAKE THE REMMERSKIESOL SYSTEM SO STRONG

1. Kiesol is an environmentallyfriendly, water based systemand is therefore suitable for usein living areas, archives, andswimming pools and even indrinking water tanks.

2. Kiesol develops water repellingconsolidation of the substratefor upgrading old waterproofingsystems and injection systemsagainst rising capillary dampetc.

3. Silicification and silica gelformation within the substrate, restrict capillary action and are therefore also water repellent.

4. Because the pore structure is not fully sealed, the systemremains water vapour diffusible,

unless specifically sealed withRemmers coatings (to meet BS8102:1990 Grade 4 for example– waterproof and vapourtight).

5. Dissolved mineral salts transport to the surface isinhibited and the salts arebound within the system.

6. All of the slurry, levelling andmortar systems are highly sulphate resistant.

7. The excellent bond of andbetween each of the individualsystem components, guaranteesmaximum security, even onextremely damp substrates.

8. Ideal application characteristics, both manually and by spray, provide exceptional economy.

9. The slurry sealant settingprocess starts immediately the system is applied; thisaccelerated setting saves timeand allows “wet on wet”working.

10. The substrate surface chemicalresistance is increased to a‘high’ classification (accordingto DIN 4030).

11. Over 50 years of successfuland practical experience, with numerous systemassessments, test certificatesand research reports guaranteemaximum security and durabilityfor Remmers customers andtheir clients.

FROM A GOOD FOUNDATION TO THE FINISHING PLASTER

Internal waterproofing and tanking – The Kiesol system

The Kiesol systems can be installed on almost any masonrysubstrate.

The right procedure for the application of internal waterproofingalways begins with sound substratepreparation.

All loose or friable materials, including any old coatings or othercontaminants, must be removed.Paints and plasters must beremoved for at least 80 cm above thewater damaged areas. Joints thathave deteriorated or are damaged bysalts, must be raked out to a minimum depth of 20 mm. When the

substrate is correctly prepared, aclean and roughened masonry surface is provided. The adhesionbetween the individual componentsof the Kiesol system is outstandingand the system as a whole, bondseffectively and durably with themasonry.

FROM ‘WET’ TO ‘DRY’ IN ONLY 3.5 HOURSInternal waterproofing – Kiesol Rapid system

When everything has to be completed very quickly – and economically:

With the new Kiesol Rapid internalwaterproofing system, it is possibleto complete the waterproofing in asingle day.

The complete waterproofing systemfrom primer to refurbishment plaster, can be installed in just 3.5 hours:Kiesol is used for priming, SulfatexGrout Rapid for the bond coat andwaterproofing, Waterproofing Fillerfor the fillets and levelling mortarand finally Restoration Mortar, for therefurbishment and waterproofing

protection. (An additional bond coatis not necessary in this system).

The fast setting behaviour of all fourcomponents, allows “wet on wet”working without any extended waiting times. One visit to site isenough. This system is easilyapplied and there are only a fewproducts required. This gives thesystem maximum security and durability, due to the excellent adhesion and performance of all ofthe components. The overall economy of this system is thereforealso outstanding.

KEEPING YOUR FEET DRYInternal waterproofing – Detailing solution for floor slabs

Complete internal waterproofingalways includes the floor slabs. Very high quality waterproofing performance is achieved here withKMB (polymer modified bitumen). It

has the advantage of improved crackbridging abilities and higher vapourresistance than any cementitiousslurry systems. This is particularlynecessary in heated basement

rooms, for which the latest EnergySaving Building Regulations acrossEurope require vapour proof sealingand thermal insulation to be provided.
