Being a red head myself, with two little red-headedruggrats, led me through a fascinating internet mazewith a bundle of very interesting facts on the distinctdifferences between red-headed people and those withother hair coloring.

Redheads are consideredmutants...or at least have amutated gene. In the late1990’s, scientists discoveredthat red hair is the result of amutation of the Melanocortin- 1 receptor (MC1R) gene. Asresearch progressed, theyfound that MC1R mutationsaffected the perception of painand the effectiveness of certaindrugs meant to block or numbthe sensation of pain. The onlyproblem with this study is that some redheads were moresensitive to pain while others had a higher tolerance.

A new study headed by Dr. Daniel Sissler of theUniversity of Louisville suggests people with naturallyred hair need about 20 percent more anesthesia thanpatients with other hair colors. “Anesthesiologist havelong grumbled that redheads can be a little harder toput under, but no one had ever studied if that was realor folklore.” Said Dr. Andrea Kurz of Washington

University in St. Louis, who praised the research.

You might be askingyourself, “Why wouldhair color haveanything to do withit?” The theory hingeson melanin, which isa pigment that isresponsible for skinand hair color.

Neither of my parentshave red hair, but both of my sons do. The gene isrecessive and may skip generations but in order toproduce redhead offspring both parents must be carriersof the gene.

The US can surely boast, anywhere from 2-6% of thepopulation has red tresses. A seemingly obsolete figure,but with a massive population, that give the United Statethe largest number of redheads in the world with 6-18million. Compare that to 650,000 in Scotland and 420,000in Ireland.

Throughout History redheads have been feared andrevered, hated and adored, degraded and exalted. Howis it that hair-color could evoke such a variety ofemotions? The color red itself that conjures up a varietyof emotions such passion to rage. Studies show that thecolor red can actually have a physical effect, byincreasing the rate of respiration and raising bloodpressure.

There are several different terms when referring todifferent shades of redheadedness, including - Ginger,Aubern, and Strawberry Blonde.

Through our Genetic quirks, redheads have inspiredresearch that may one day lead to safer medicine. Wemay not fight crime but I like to think that in this smallway, redheads are using their mutant powers for good.

Some interesting FACTS about Redheads.1. Redheads feel the cold 10 degrees lower then others2. Redheads bleed more profusely then other people

when cut.3. Redheads are more prone to fainting spells.4. Natural Redheads have the red coloration in all their

hair, facial and body hair.5. Redheads are 3 times more sensitive than others to

the effect of drugs.6. Redheadedness has been linked to skin cancer.7. Redheads are found almost exclusively in the United

States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand8. Bees are thought to sting redheads more often.9. It’s harder to find a vein on redheads to draw blood

or insert an IV10. Adults have about 120,000 hairs on their head.

Redheads have fewer, blondes more and brunettesmost.

11. Redheads have higher IQ’s than ANYONE! Ok Okthat’s not a fact, Just checking to see if you werestill paying attention.

12. Redheads Make up only 1% of the World’sPopulation. (We literally are one in a million!)

Grand Opening of theAmarillo Zoo Herpetarium

Join us for the much anticipated grand opening of theAmarillo Zoo Herpetarium. After almost 2 years ofplanning and construction the Zoo’s Herpetarium willopen its doors for visitors on Saturday, October 24th.The Herpetarium will house 26 exhibits featuring over35 live snakes, turtles, lizards and frogs from throughoutthe world. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place

at 10:00 am at the entranceto the herpetarium. That willbe followed by grandopening activities includingtemporary snake tattoos, akids’ craft tent, and even achance to touch a live snake!

“The Amarillo Zoo herpetarium gives families a uniqueopportunity to see scaly and slimy creatures more closelythan ever before—and that kind of interaction makes alasting impression on Zoo visitors”, said Rhonda Votino,Zoo Curator.

Saturday also marks the day that the Amarillo Zoo willbegin charging admission. The new fees will help thezoo continue its growth and improvement by adding newexhibits and visitor amenities.

Founded in 1955, the AmarilloZoo is an excit ing familydestination that provides aunique educational andconservation resource thatserves over 200,000 guestsannually. Set in a 15-acrebeautifully landscaped siteinside Thompson Park, the Zoois home to more than 95species of exotic and nativeanimals.

The Amarillo Zoo is located atNE 24th Ave. and DumasHighway in Thompson Park.The Zoo is open daily from 9:30a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (closedThanksgiving, Christmas, NewYear’s Day and Martin LutherKing Day).

Admission is $3 for adults (ages13-61), $2 for seniors (ages 62and up), $1 for children (ages3-12) and free for childrenunder 3.
