KUVO has a rich and celebrated history that began in 1982 with a handful of volunteers and their dream of founding a Hispanic-controlled public radio station. In 1985 that idea became a reality when KUVO signed on the air for its first broadcast, with one full-time person and three full-time volunteers. Volunteer djs, using donated records from personal collections and local record shops, went on the air with a format of jazz/fusion mixed with blues; to put a Latino signature on the music, they threw in a dash of Salsa!

In 2005, an influential quartet co-chaired KUVO's 20th Anniversary Celebration: Senator Ken Salazar (the first Hispanic elected to represent Colorado in the United States Senate and to serve as Attorney General of Colorado), former Denver mayor Federico Pena (Denver's first Hispanic mayor and former United States Secretary of Labor and Secretary of Transportation), former Denver mayor Wellington E. Webb (Denver's first African-American Mayor) and then Denver mayor John Hickenlooper, who is also a huge jazz fan and a current member of jazz89 KUVO.

In 2013, KUVO joined the Rocky Mountain Broadcasting Network which includes Rocky Mountain PBS and the I-News Network. Today jazz89 KUVO broadcasts live 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and has garnered national recognition for its diverse, quality programming. In 2014, KUVO was named by Down Beat magazine one of the 80 great things about Jazz today and The London Telegraph honored KUVO by naming it one of the top jazz and soul stations available in the world.

Jazz Pioneers – Origins of America’s Authentic Musical Art Form

KUVO honors the pioneers of jazz by featuring their compositions in their original form or with performances by the next generation of artists. Artists include Louie Armstrong, Fats Waller, Louis Jordan, Bix Beiderbecke, George Gershwin and Bessie Smith. Timeless classics include: Someone to Watch Over Me, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Basin Street Blues, Caldonia, and What a Wonderful World.

Frank Sinatra & Count Basie

Swing / Big Bands The “Golden Age” of Jazz Big Band music is identified most with the swing era, although there were large-jazz dance bands before and after the 1930’s & 1940’s. Artists include Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman and Lionel Hampton. Vocalists include Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday and Nancy Wilson. The swing era created many of the jazz standards that are still being recorded and performed.

Charlie Parker

Bebop / Modern Jazz – Artist with Improvisational Virtuosity Modern Jazz was a radical new music that exploded after World War II. Ensembles tended to be under seven pieces, and the soloist was free to get adventurous. Bebop divorced itself from popular and dancing audiences, uplifting jazz to an art music. Artists included John Coltrane, Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk. Some of the biggest songs are Straight - No Chaser, Salt Peanuts, and Billie’s Bounce.

Arturo Sandoval

Latin Jazz – Crazy Rhythms and Sonic Sounds Of all the post-swing styles, Latin Jazz has been the most consistently popular and it is easy to see why. The emphasis on percussion and Cuban rhythms make the style quite danceable and accessible. Essentially, it is a mixture of bop-oriented jazz with Latin percussion. Important artists include Poncho Sanchez, Tito Puente, and Eddie Palmeiri. KUVO was founded with a Latin Jazz tradition.

Wynton Marsalis

New Traditionalist – Today’s Artist Enhancing Jazz’s Legacy Today’s jazz builds upon and blends the many styles of jazz music and includes New Orleans Soul/Funk, Jump Blues, Piano Standards, Strait Jazz and mix of all the above. Popular artists include The Roy Hargrove Quintet, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, Diana Krall, Keith Jarrett and Dee Dee Bridgewater.

KUVO is a non-commercial public radio station that conforms to the FCC and IRS guidelines for underwriting credit (message) announcements. As a non-commercial radio station, all underwriting messages must be non-commercial in nature and tone. This is a guideline of what is and what is not allowed in messages:

KUVO underwriting credits must contain: The legal name of the underwriter, to be read immediately after the standard

opening phrase, “Support for KUVO comes from…”

Credits may also include the following: Non-promotional descriptions of organization, products and services.

Organization mission language that identifies and is not promotional/subjective.

Establish slogans (verbatim) that identify and do not promote.

Non-promotional location information (e.g., phone number, website address).

Credits may not contain promotional language, including: Qualitative language (favorable qualities, benefits and claims).

Calls to action. (“stop in” “find us” “look for the”)

Comparative language (e.g., “leader,” “largest,” “the only,” “exclusively,” “ranked number one”).

Price and value information.
