For my final project, my proposal is to create a 2-5 minute trailer for a fictional travel show called “The Long Way Back”. The premise of this fictional travel show is capturing a travel style that is more focused on slow movement, road trips, local exploration and non-traditional “travel show” aesthetics. This project is inspired by my own personal passion for travel and the style of travelling that I grew up partaking in. Using my own video and photos from trips I have done recently, I want to create a strong aesthetic with the themes of adventure, exploration and travel while not forgetting that the best places and best experiences can happen as close as in your back yard.

THE IDEAMy concept comes from the work that I would like to achieve with this project. With some experience already with After Effects, I wanted to push myself creatively so that I would be learning new techniques and skills while still exploring an interesting theme and making something relevant to my design portfolio. I didn’t want to create a kinetic type music video because I wasn’t so much interested in playing with just typography. I also didn’t think working with purely video and interesting effects was difficult enough for myself. I knew that I wanted to be able to combine motion graphics, text and video in a compelling way but still stay within the realm of plausible in the time we are given.

I struggled with the delivery method. I initially thought to make an intro sequence to a TV show or a movie because the existing story would be exciting to visually

translate. The problem was that I couldn’t figure out what TV show or movie I wanted to use. So, I decided to create a show that I would like to watch and that doesn’t exist yet! I wanted to use all my own footage so that I could control everything exactly and also create a new environment and atmosphere.

INSPIRATIONI love travelling and grew up taking long, wandering road trips through many places in North America that so many people here haven’t actually experienced. I camped everywhere and loved exploring everything and everywhere. With The Long Way Back I want to capture the essence of experiencing wonder and exploration anywhere, whether it is near or far.

My visual aesthetic is inspired by the photographers Mike Russ, Ana Lovric, Alex Strohl and Scott Bakken and magazines like Kinfolk and Saturdays. For motion graphics, things that I really liked were:http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/semi-permanent-portland-2013/http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/we-are-the-giant/http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/hard-rock-medical/

I really love the way these videos incorporate text in an interesting and creative way as well as the transitions. I also find the way that they move from still images to video really interesting and something that I would like to explore myself.

PROCESSI wanted to keep the music really simple and maybe possibly without words. I knew that I wanted something that was not too “obvious” for lack of better words. I really like the idea of something kind of folky and “down home”. The songs that I chose was the Jezabels – Austerlitz.

The song gives me the feeling of movement and lightness and exploration and has enough beat that will make transitions fluid. I feel that it will match the aesthetic that I am searching for without lending too much of a certain predisposed aesthetic from itself.

For the look I plan on gathering different textures and using specific colourgrading to create a specific colour scheme and feel, visually. This will be done in either premiere pro or after effects. I don’t want the photos or the video to look too processed however as I feel that will take away from the idea of a very natural and “back to nature” feel I want to keep.

All the photos and video will be my own. It will either be previously shot footage from trips that I have done across Canada and into Alaska or it will be video that I take specifically to emphasize the look of the show trailer.

I would like to use the narrative line of different quotes from famous travellers and meaningful quotes about travelling. I want to use these to emphasize the style of travelling as well as a way of creating visual interest that isn’t reliant on just video or photo. I think the way this text integrates itself into the imagery will be a great way of creating a continuing narrative through the 2+ minute video.

FINAL OUTPUTThe final project will be a 3 minute video advertising the coming of a new TV show called “The Long Way Back”. It will feature clean, colour graded photos and videos showing different parts of Canada and Alaska. There will be a clean visual aesthetic focusing on more of a “mood” than trying to advertise specific places or activities.

The music will be the song “Austerlitz” by the Jezabels.

There will be interesting quotes such as “one’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things” by Henry Miller and “not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves” Henry David Thoreau. They will be integrated into the video subtly, but still obvious, more to emphasize the mood than to be informative.
