MKE supports young apprentices following
closure of Sheerness based steel mill
The closure of Thamesteel Ltd was a source of much sadness for the local
community leaving a large number of skilled workers without jobs,
including young apprentices who were mere months away from
completing their HNCs.
In partnership with MidKent College, MKE has employed two of these
apprentices and will support them through their educational studies and
provide them with training to boost their fledgling careers.
Operations Manager for MKE,
Shaun Stickings said: “In these
difficult economic times we
are pleased to be able to assist
in taking on two young
engineers whose futures
appeared uncertain following
the closure of Thamesteel. The
partnership with MidKent
College results in a mutually
beneficial outcome for both
MKE and the two young men
we have employed”.

Managing Director, Andrew Savage,
welcomes the new arrivals
MKE signs up to STEM
MKE has recently been reapproved on the Utilities Vendor Data
Base (UVDB) run by Achilles. Initiated in 1996, the UVDB is an
approved supplier listing for companies wishing to tender
services to customers within the utilities industries. Those who
register have to meet strict criteria to ensure acceptance and
compliance and are externally assessed to ensure standards in
Quality and Health & Safety are managed and maintained.
With this renewal, MKE remains in a prime position to continue
to offer the very best service to our customers in the utilities
industries. Click on the logo below for further details.
Issues regarding the environment affect
everyone and we are actively encouraged to
take measures to help preserve it, for
example, reducing one’s carbon footprint.
As part of our continuing commitment to
minimising any potential impact our activities
may have on the environment, MKE have
signed up and achieved the Blue Level
Standard of STEM (Steps Towards
Environmental Management).
This is a scheme organised by Kent County
Council in order to support local businesses
and help them reduce their environmental
impact leading to improved reputation,
reduction of waste, happier customers and
ultimately, increased efficiency.

Partner focus - SKF
Founded in 1907, SKF is the world’s largest manufacturer of
bearings and pioneered the use of the self-aligning radial
ball bearing.
Expanding on this initial
success, the company, based in Gothenburg, Sweden,
expanded to include the
supply of seals, mechatronics,
lubrication systems and other
services.
Today, SKF is represented in
130 countries worldwide
encompassing over 130
manufacturing sites combined
with the selling power of more
than 15,000 distribution
locations. SKF is present in most industries including cars
and light trucks, aerospace, wind energy, railway, metal,
machine tool, medical and food and beverage.
The SKF Certified Rebuilder Program is a collaborative
venture between SKF and approved repair facilities and
distributors. Prospective partners have to meet strict
standards in order to be approved, therefore an SKF
Certified Rebuilder is a guarantee of a quality result, every
time.

The annual MKE Charity Ball took place in October 2011 with the
aim of raising a significant sum of money for Demelza
Hospice Care for Children.
The event was also an opportunity for MKE to celebrate another
successful year and enjoy some down time with our customers
and suppliers.
Combined with a raffle held at the MKE Christmas party, the
company was pleased to be able to present a cheque to Demelza
for the sum of £3795.
We hope to beat this total when the next Charity Ball takes place
later this year!
