Definitions
Mobile Web vs. Mobile App
Mobile Website: Information created specifically for mobile devices is accessed by the user via a browser in an optimized experience.
Mobile App: Specialized piece of software that is downloaded to a mobile device where most of the information then resides on the phone. A mobile app gets limited updates from a server or to conduct transactions.
Which Platform do you choose?App strategy is costly across entire app lifecycle
iOS or Android or both means multiple development projects Features and Functionality?
Test refine testMobile Web now offers same touch features as apps

The Mobile Web as a Stepping Stone
Questions to ask yourself before you go “Native”
Options for Mobile Web Development
In-House…
1. Let your web developers build it in-house because “it’s easy”
© Netbiscuits US 2012
Real World Result:eBay tried to build a Webkit only rendering library & platform• Spent 420 man-months
on the project• Launched in parallel
with Netbiscuits solution
• Netbiscuits generated 50-60% more traffic & revenue
Options for Mobile Web Development
Outsource to Screen Scraper….
2. Outsource it to a screen scraping mobile development vendor because “they won’t bother your IT team.”
© Netbiscuits US 2012
Real World Result:Sears switched from screen scraper competitor
• 2 hrs of technical support + NB free trial license = m.Kmart.com
Options for Mobile Web Development
Open Source it…
3. Use an open source software solutions “because it’s cheap and easy!”
© Netbiscuits US 2012
Real World Result:PayPal switched from an open source JavaScript/CSS Framework
• Code base shrank by 50% - less “if/else” to deal with device display issues
• Production releases due to device rendering errors reduced to zero
Options for Mobile Web Development
Pick a Platform…
4. Use a mobile platform that leverages your existing web infrastructure “because it’s future-proof and scalable ”
Integrate into existing backend architecture and reuse critical systems & services
Expose mobile optimized presentation layer with BML
Seamless integration between platform services including video transcoding, page generation and CDN systems
Browser implementation changes and device fragmentation resolved by platform; creating streamlined maintenance and Quality Assurance cycles – pre and post-development
Standards compliant XML can be generated, manipulated and schema-validated by existing tools, ensuring standards compliant HTML
Why A Platform
Utilizing a platform provides benefits…
Unlimited number of applications that can be developed within license
Production and developer friendly tools
Standard interfaces to CMS, commerce, and other back-end systems
Integrations with leading partners
24/7 customer support (responses usually come in less than 15 minutes)
Bandwidth allocation
Unlimited device optimization upgrades (current library has 8,000+ devices)
Netbiscuits Key Benefits

How We Do It
Integrated Development & Hosting
Everything you need to build award winning experiences
Device Management
Netbiscuits’ custom device database, recognition & redirect system
The problem:Existing Open-source tools don’t work
WURFL has non-verified device dataDevice information is erroneous and
when trusted, can lead to CSS, JS & layout problems
The solution:Proprietary Device Testing protocol/methodology
Daily live updates20+ devices tested per weekDetailed info on browser capabilities, media
support, processing power, memory capacity and more on a per device level.
Write a single page in BiscuitML that works across 8,000+ mobile & connected devices the first time
How do we do it?
We enable feature packed mobile sites by providing a vast array of multi-layout building blocks, called Biscuits, to create each site.
Removing the complexity of programming, each Biscuit is individually adaptable to the capabilities of a specific mobile device
Netbiscuits is able to exploit the rich, touch-based user interface capabilities of today’s smartphones and tablets while guaranteeing optimized delivery to less expensive but highly popular mass market feature phones as well
Each Biscuit is individually tested on our database of over 8,000 devices. This means you know your site will work on every device today, and every device tomorrow

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
We took a first stab at the kinds of tools the Post-Gazette could use in creating a mobile experience with Netbiscuits
Please visit:
http://bit.ly/AAkaLR
This site was created merely to show the variety of ways content can be delivered by the Post-Gazette., not to highlight creative elements.
Please note:
•Ticker at top of screen can be installed and removed in less than 10 seconds, and render instantly. Truly immediate breaking news.
•Content sections are built to do dropdown presentation of content directly from your RSS feeds.
•In Sports, there are fewer headlines, but a “More Sports” button that will deliver a full sports page. Note the floating ad position at the top of that Sports page.
•Because we don’t have access to your files, the videos are delivered off your systems. However, if the Post-Gazette were to be a client, there are a multitude of ways to deliver videos to the end user. MTV has built their mobile business around it.
•In the PG Daily Deal, we added a “Find Now” to the bottom, where users can utilize our store locator GPS functionality.
•Social Media interaction can be added to every page.
