Our Lady of Fatima (Part 13) In the summer months of 1916, the Angel of Peace appeared for the second time. The little shepherds were playing, when suddenly they saw the Angel. He said to them: “What are you doing? You must pray! Pray a lot! The Hearts of Jesus and Mary have merciful designs on you. You must constantly offer your prayers and sacrifices to God, the Most

High.”Lucia asked the Angel, “How are we to make sacrifices?” The Angel said, “Make everything you can a sacrifice. Offer them to God as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and ask for the conversion of sinners. In this way you will bring peace to your country. I am its Guardian Angel, the Angel of Portugal. Bear and accept with submission the sufferings God will send you.” The three shepherds then began every day to sacrifice many things that gave them pleasure and offer them in reparation for sinners. In the fall, the three shepherds were tending their sheep near the cave where the Angel had appeared the first time. After lunch, they knelt to pray with their foreheads touching the ground, as the Angel had taught them. They prayed the Pardon Prayer many times. Suddenly, an extraordinary light shone on them! They jumped up and saw the Angel. He was holding a chalice with his left hand and the sacred host above it. Drops of blood were falling into the chalice from the host. The Angel left the chalice and host suspended in the air, and together with the shepherds he knelt and bowed down. The Angel then taught the children a powerful prayer of adoration and reparation: Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifferences with which He Himself is offended. And through the merits of His Most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of you the conversion of poor sinners. Then rising, the Angel took the chalice and host in his hands. He gave the host to Lucia and shared the blood from the chalice between Francisco and Jacinta, saying: “Take and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Make reparation for their crimes and console your God.” He fell prostrate again and repeated the prayer three times. The shepherds, immersed in prayer and absorbed by this experience, did not notice the Angel had left them. The children agreed not to tell anyone about the Angel, feeling an interior necessity to keep quiet about these events. During the apparitions of the Angel of Peace, Francisco could see everything, but was unable to hear anything.Reflection: How well do I accept the sufferings that God sends me? Do I use my suffering as a form of prayer for the conversion of sinners and/or for other intentions? What do I remember my First Holy Communion?

A Note From Our PastorQUICK FACTS ABOUT THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION

Tuesday October 31, 2017 marked five centuries since the start of the process by Martin Luther that led Protestants to break away from the Roman Catholic Church eventually leading to thousands of different denominations. This was not only a major revolution for the Christian religion in general but for the Catholic Church in particular. Most of the Protestant Churches celebrated this 500th year on the same Sunday (October 29) we were dedicating our remodeled Church here at St. Andrew the Apostle. Allow me to share with you some key facts about Protestantism and its birth in a small German town which might answer several questions I have been asked since that day.

October 31, 1517 is the date that German theologian Martin Luther then in his early 30s, published his famous “95 Theses” of criticism of the Catholic Church. His brazen challenge to the powerful Catholic Church created shock waves that eventually changed the face of Christianity. His main complaint was against the Catholic concept of “indulgences” whereby a repentant sinner could reduce their punishment in purgatory through monetary contributions to the Church.

Luther did not stop his resentment of the Catholic Church there but he also attacked what he saw as papal abuses and questioned the place of saints. Legend says that he nailed his list of objections to these and others to the door of a church in the town of Wittenberg, where he was a theology professor.

Of course, he was excommunicated just over three years later but the Reformation had been launched: his message spread quickly, disseminated by the developing printing press. The Reformation caused unprecedented upheavals in Europe, leading to wars, persecutions and exoduses, including the departure of the Pilgrims to what was later to become our own country America.

In Britain, King Henry VIII followed suit by breaking ties with the Catholic Church in 1534 and establishing the Church of England.

However, the deadliest of Europe’s religious conflicts was the Thirty Years’ War which ended in 1648 and after which the influence of religion in European politics was reduced but the differences in belief between Catholics and Protestants persisted. What are these differences? To this we shall return in the next article, so watch this space!

In Christ,

Fr. Robert

Call to Prayer: We begin in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.First Reading: Wisdom 6:12-16Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13Jesus told his disciples this parable:“The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise,‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise ones replied, ‘No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.’While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’ But he said in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
