This is an exciting time for you and the college. By the time you enrol we will have completed our move to new state-of-the-art facilities in Swanswell. For example, as students you will have access to video streaming, which will deliver pre-recorded classes and presentations via the network to your computer. This will give you a permanent record of your lessons, which you can view over a fully secured wireless network from anywhere in the college or at home by logging on to our website.

Our open evenings, which take place throughout the year, give you the opportunity to come and have a look around our new college, talk to tutors about the courses on offer and check out our fantastic facilities. If you can’t make it into college on those days don’t worry; we offer a ‘talk and tour’ service which means you can call and make an appointment to come in when it’s convenient for you; individuals or groups are equally welcome!

There are so many courses available for you to study it can be difficult to know where to start. It is important you make the right choice, so here is some advice about how to select and apply for a course.

Advice and Information

Our friendly team of Course Information Advisors are here to help you in deciding which course to study. They can provide you with detailed information to help you to choose the best course for your future. Applying for a CourseThe step-by-step approach opposite shows how the application process works at a glance, read on for further detail.

If you are interested in a course, you first need to complete the application form, which can be found towards the back page. This does not fully commit you, but it does allow us to start making arrangements for you to come and talk to us. Although it helps to have your application in early remember that it’s never too late to apply. Please note that some course areas, particularly construction and engineering related courses are very popular and places are in high demand. If you are interested in this particular field an early application is recommended.

Every course has a recommended entry requirement, for example, four GCSEs at grade C including English and Maths. However, equivalent qualifications are also acceptable such as GNVQ Intermediate or BTEC First Diploma. Entry requirements are guidelines only and we do not always base our decisions about course offers on qualifications or expected exam results alone. Your hobbies, interests and personal achievements are also of interest to us, which is why we ask you to outline them in your application form. During your interview the course tutor will use this information to assess your suitability for the course.

If you are accepted on the course with less than the recommended entry requirements, you may be required to take part in an additional programme of study. This will help you develop the skills needed to be successful on your course.

The Application FormOnce we receive your application form, you will receive an acknowledgement letter from us showing your application reference number. We will then invite you to come along to college for a short informal interview with the course tutor. If you are finding it difficult to choose a course that’s right for you please come and talk to us. We have experts on hand that will point you in the right direction so you can start on your course with confidence.

The InterviewAt the interview, the tutor will tell you about the course and ask you some questions about your interests, career aspirations and likely examination results. You will be able to ask your own questions and take a look around the college. Parents and guardians are also welcome to come along. The tutor should be able to make you a conditional or unconditional offer at the interview. However, if they advise you that you are better suited to an alternative course, you will be directed on what to do next.

After the interview we will send you a letter confirming your offer. You will then be advised when to attend college to enrol on your chosen course.

EnrolmentFollowing your GCSE examination results you will be sent a letter inviting you to attend an enrolment day in late August, which is when you officially become a City College Coventry student. You will need to bring confirmation of your examination results and you will receive joining instructions telling you exactly where you need to go at the start of your course.

QUALIFICATIONS

AS/A LevelsAS/A Levels are made up of six units. The first three units make up the AS Level, which is a qualification in its own right. The second three units taken in the second year of study are called A2 and need to be completed to make up the full A Level. An A2 is not a qualification in its own right.

City College Coventry is the only further education provider of A Levels in the city and offers a wide range of AS and A2 programmes.

In their first year, students normally choose four subjects and take their three best subjects into the second year to A2 Level.

National DiplomaNational CertificateNational AwardBTEC National, Diplomas, Awards and Certificates are vocational courses combining academic and practical elements. The programmes include assignments based on real work situations and often involve real work experience.

BTEC National Diplomas are equivalent to three AS/A2 Levels and usually involve two years of study. BTEC National Certificates are equivalent to two AS/A2 Levels and BTEC National Awards are equivalent to one AS/A2 Level.

GCSEsThese qualifications are offered as part of other study programmes, on a part time basis and as a one-year intensive programme where up to five GCSEs will be studied.

NVQsNational Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are for young people who prefer practical work based training. They are offered from Levels 1 to 4 in a range of occupational areas. The student is normally employed and will attend college one day a week.

Key SkillsStudents may be required to undertake Key Skills as part of their full time course. Key Skills comprise of Communication, Application of Number and Information Communication Technology. The level to be taken will be dependent on the student’s entry qualifications.

OnStudent Advice and Welfare

09Learner SupportSupport for students: Our CommitmentIn working towards ensuring that we are an entirely inclusive college, we are committed to regular reviews of all our policies and making any reasonable adaptations to our practices, procedures and accommodation, in order to meet your support needs.

If you consider that you have a disability, a learning difficulty or a particular personal support need, we will make any reasonable adjustment to meet your needs. We can provide a wide range of academic support to help you access your programme of study and give you the best chance of success. The Additional Support Team provides literacy, numeracy or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) support on a one to one basis and we have a team of tutors who specialise in specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia or dyscalculia.

As well as physical access support, personal enablers and communicators for the deaf we can provide support for learning difficulties throughout a range including profound and complex disabilities, mental health difficulties and Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Our admissions process allows you to identify your support needs at an early stage, using the Application Form or the Enrolment Form, so that we can put in place the support you may need at the start of your programme. You may choose to discuss your support requirements in a confidential setting with the Additional Support Manager. You can do this by requesting an interview on your Enrolment Form or by contacting the Manager directly on (024) 7679 1675 before you complete the application process.

It is important that you let us know your support requirements as soon as possible so that we can respond however, if at any stage of your programme of study you feel the need for support you can discuss this with the Additional Support Manager. You can contact Learner Support on (024) 7679 1574.

ChildcareIf you are 19 and under, ‘Care to Learn’ will finance your childcare costs up to £160 per week per child. More information is available from Student Services or Connexions. If you are over 19 and eligible for help from the Learner Support Fund, the College can meet childcare costs up to £5,125 per child per year.

To apply, you will need to complete both the Learner Support Fund Application Form and the Childcare Application Form. Once you have completed both forms, provided the specified evidence and given us a copy of your child/children(s) birth certificate(s), a decision can be made about your funding.

CounsellingIf you ever need someone to act as a sounding board for your worries, whether it is pressure relating to study or personal issues, help is available. Sometimes it can be more helpful to talk to someone who can view your problems from a more objective standpoint. The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) accredited service is available to all students and our counsellors are trained to help you.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)The Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) awards allowances for attendance and achievement under a national scheme. The Education Maintenance Allowances (EMA) scheme is open to 16 – 18 year old students, who decide to go to college or stay on at school and who meet the eligibility criteria. The scheme is means-tested and weekly payments ranging from £10 to £30 are paid directly into your bank account. Achievement and attendance bonuses are also available.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)The Adult Learning Grant is an allowance payable to adults (aged 19 plus) who are studying full-time for their first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification. Payments range from £10 to £30 per week and are based on the learner’s income (and partners if this is applicable). It is NOT possible to claim ALG at the same time as certain income based benefits.

Learner Support Fund (LSF)The Learner Support Funds (LSF) provides students with financial help to meet the additional costs of study.

You can get LSF if: • You are a home student, aged over 16 on a relevant

LSC funded course• The gross household income is below £18,000• You have relevant Home Office status (this will be

determined on application)• You are an asylum seeker aged 16 or 17.

The eligibility criteria may change subject to LSC guidance.

How to apply?Visit Student Services and ask for an LSF application form.

When to apply?The opening date for applications is Friday 14th August 2009. Return your application form, with the requested evidence, to Student Services where an Advice and Guidance member of staff will go through the form with you (we do not accept application forms through the post). Closing date for application forms is Friday 11th June 2010.

Q: How can I find out more information on courses?A: The courses detailed are available from September 2009. The entry requirements, course length, course content and assessment are detailed in the course information section. Q: What do I do when I have decided which course to study?A: Complete the application form towards the back page and send it to the Admissions Office. Q: What if I don’t get the results I want?A: Don’t panic! You may still be accepted on the course if the tutor feels that with extra support, you will succeed. In this case you will be advised on the additional form of study you may be required to undertake.

Highly Qualified StaffStudents are taught in an adult atmosphere of mutual respect by our dedicated, experienced and highly qualified staff. As well as being experts in their fields, the majority have experience of working in industry and in business. Many have higher degrees, masters and doctorates. Others have written text books and some are examiners for the national examination boards.

When you join the college as a full time student you are allocated a Progress Tutor who will plan your programme and qualification aims with you as well as review your progress on a regular basis. Together you will come up with an Individual Learning Plan. You will receive a yearly written report on your progress and will have regular tutorials.

Pleasing OFSTED InspectionWe were particularly pleased with the OFSTED inspection in May 2007 which highlighted our strengths in high success rates in Work-based Learning, strong strategic direction and vision, good partnerships with schools, employers and community groups and good support for learners.

Trips and VisitsMany courses run trips and visits, which will provide travel opportunities designed to enrich your learning experience. Fashion students will visit Barcelona fashion week to prepare themselves for their own fashion exhibitions. Our Public Services students attend residential visits, which see them white water rafting and abseiling. Graphic Design students attend a three-day design conference in London’s Leicester Square. Our Performing Arts students regularly perform at the Edinburgh Festival. They also receive visits and performances from nationally acclaimed dance groups. Our Business and Engineering students have visited Paris, Stonehenge and Alton Towers and there are plans to visit Jersey and New York.

As a full time student, enrichment activities are organised for you and take place during the five Learner Management Weeks that are scheduled throughout the year.

Making FriendsOne of the best things about leaving school and studying at college is all the new friends you will make. Students at the college come from all over Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond. Many of our students come to us from overseas. In fact, we have students from well over 100 different countries spanning all seven continents. Learning Resource CentreThe Learning Resource Centre is the place to be for all kinds of information to help you with your assignments. We have the latest computer facilities including DVD writers, 19 inch flat panel monitors, scanners and colour printing.

All facilities are available on a drop-in basis to surf the internet, send and receive emails, watch streaming video, or even search through our 35,000 periodicals, books, magazines, journals, DVDs, CDs and audio tapes.

We also offer workshops and booklets to help you use the facilities along with friendly staff who are always on hand to help support you and your studies.

Prayer RoomThe college has a Multi-Faith Prayer Room which is open to all students of all faiths or no faith who wish to use its facilities.

Students’ UnionThe Students’ Union is run by Students for Students.

The Students’ Union is here to promote the welfare of students; to encourage Students’ societies, sports and social activities and to act as a channel of communication between its members, the college and other bodies.

An elected Executive Committee manages the Union and also organises a variety of social events. Furthermore, it represents the student body on a number of important College Committees including the Board of Governors and Academic Board.

As a student at City College Coventry you are automatically a member of the Students’ Union. Students will carry a Democracy Card, which is now part of your college ID. This is not the discount card!

In order to obtain the NUS Extra Discount Card, students can now order online at www.nusonline.co.uk. The card will be produced and sent to the college for your collection.

NUS Extra Discount Card offers you an extended range of discounts that you can’t get with your normal Student Democracy Card. This entitles you to discounts in shops, cinemas, sports centres, restaurants, theatres, heritage centres and much more.

Accountancy

Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Fast Track – Level 3Duration: 1 Year Start: September

Who is this course for?If you want a career in one of the many sectors of the accounting profession, this course could be for you. The full-time AAT programme will enable you to achieve the AAT Foundation and Intermediate Levels in one year.

When do I attend?The course runs on four days a week, Monday and Tuesday 9.30am - 4.30pm, Thursday 9.30am - 3.00pm and Friday, 9.30am - 12.30pm.

What do I need to get a place on the course?Entry requirements - four GCSEs grades ‘A–C’ in Maths and English plus two others. Each applicant will be tested for Literacy, Numeracy and ICT prior to enrolment. This will be assessed during an interview with the course tutor.

What will I study?The AAT Foundation Stage consists of seven units:

•Achieving Personal Effectiveness•Making and Recording Payments • Monitor and Maintain a Healthy, Safe and

Secure Workplace • Preparing Ledger Balances and an Initial

Trial Balance •Recording Income and Receipts • Supplying Information for Management

Control •Working with Information Technology.

The AAT Intermediate Stage consists of three units:

• Maintaining Financial Records and Preparing Accounts

How is the course assessed?You will have to submit a portfolio which includes simulations and other evidence showing the knowledge and understanding required for each unit. You also have to sit exams which are organised and marked by the AAT.

ApprenticeshipsStart: September

If you would like to learn through a combination of on the job education and training, apprenticeships could be for you. Apprenticeships offer training in a wide range of areas from business administration to specialist skills like engineering.

The length of an apprenticeship is dependent on the course undertaken, the level of apprenticeship and the development of the apprentice. Academic qualifications are taken into account when you apply for an apprenticeship but all applicants are assessed and placed onto a suitable level of programme.

All our apprenticeships are regularly checked and assessed by external inspectors for quality. Our last OFSTED inspection in May 2007 highlighted our high success rates in Work based Learning. We guarantee that all apprentices will undergo a nationally approved training programme backed by the highest quality support and guidance.

We currently offer apprenticeship employment in the following areas:

•Accountancy•Administration•Construction Crafts•Early Years•Electrical Installation•Hairdressing•Light Vehicle Engineering•Plumbing.

Apprenticeships are available in a wide range of work areas, either at Level 2, or as advanced apprenticeships at Level 3. All training programmes have been carefully developed and designed by industry, to ensure they produce competent employees, who will be valuable members of the workforce and have the potential to progress within a company.

Each apprentice follows a nationally approved framework that leads to a minimum Level 2 skills-based qualification and undertakes training to develop communication, numeracy and information technology skills.

Apprentices will be employed by a company and receive an agreed salary. To start an apprenticeship, you will need to be under 25 years of age and ideally under 19 years of age (only limited opportunities are available for those aged over 19).

At City College Coventry we have an excellent and deserved reputation for our art, design and fashion courses. In recent years our fashion department has won the Clothes Show Live Young Designer of the Year award twice and runner up once. They have also won the Clothes Show Live Young Hat Designer of the Year.

Who is this course for?If you have an interest in Art and Design and want to develop your practical skills in this subject, the BTEC Introductory Diploma in Art and Design could be an ideal first course for you. It will give you the chance to study in a number of art and design areas.

When do I attend?The course runs from Monday to Friday, 9.00am - 4.30pm.

What do I need to get a place on the course?There are no specific entrance requirements but you will have to attend an interview to check the course is suitable for you and bring examples of your work to demonstrate your artistic ability.

What will I study?You will study the following units:

Who is this course for?If you have a keen interest in Art and Design and a commitment to develop your individual artistic potential, then the BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design could be for you. The course will give you the opportunity to extend your range of creative skills and take specialist subject options in your second year which will provide a sound foundation for further study or future employment. It is offered alongside AS and A2 Level Fine Art as a complementary qualification so students will develop a broad based Art and Design portfolio of work.

What do I need to get a place on the course?You need at least five GCSEs at grade ‘C’ or above or an equivalent qualification, such as a BTEC First Diploma or GNVQ Intermediate at Distinction level. You will also need to bring along a portfolio of your work to demonstrate your artistic ability.

What do I need to get a place on the course?You need at least four GCSEs grade ‘C’ and above, or an equivalent qualification, such as four Merits on a BTEC First Diploma or GNVQ Intermediate in Art and Design at Merit Level. Who is this course for?If you are a creative person and have a keen interest in photography and an interest in increasing your skills in this subject to professional standards, then the BTEC National Diploma in Photography could be for you. You will gain experience of a wide range of photographic areas, as well as the opportunity to specialise during your second year.


What do I need to get a place on the course?You need at least four GCSEs at grades ‘C’ or above, or an equivalent qualification, such as a BTEC First Diploma or GNVQ Intermediate at Merit level. You will also need to bring along a portfolio of your work to demonstrate your artistic ability and interest in photography. Mature applicants are particularly welcome and can be assessed and credited with existing skills and knowledge.

What will I study?You will study photographic aspects from traditional to digital, black and white and colour, in the studio and on location.

In the second year, you will have the opportunity to specialise in your final major project, in an area of photography you have identified as a personal strength, such as documentary, editorial, fashion, art, or advertising photography.
