In the time of Jesus, after the period of the betrothal was finished and all the agreements were at last reached and signed, the wedding could take place. Weddings typically extended over a period of five to seven days. Autumn was the best time for marriages: the harvest was in, the vintage over, minds were free, and hearts were at rest. It was a season when the evenings were cool and delightful and it was agreeable to sit up late at night. Usually the entire village gathered for a wedding..

We, the faith community of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, humbly proclaim with our beloved Virgin Mary, that we are the servants of the Lord. Rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we value and celebrate the diversity of our cultures and strive to be of loving support to one another. We are committed to the sacramental life and Traditions of the Church through worship, prayer, study, and service. We seek to become true evangelists by continuing to nourish and strengthen our Roman Catholic Faith.
"For I was hungry, and you gave Me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me. Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me." Whether being a Eucharistic minister to those who cannot bring themselves to Mass, participating in the Food Outreach Program, or personally visitingpeople who are ill, we are all given many opportunities to be servants of Christ by being servants to one another. On December 22, students of Assumption Youth Ministry, including myself, had the privilege of fulfilling our call to "Clothe the Naked." Every year, our youth ministry makes scarves for those who reside in local nursing homes, and we were all given the chance to personally give these scarves to them as Christmas presents. Once we arrived, we sang carols in their gathering room, and then we were given handfuls of scarves to wrap around the residents. The amount of joy that was brought to them by simply offering a piece of cloth made me realize that we were doing more than simply giving scarves away. We were doing more than just clothing the naked. When we wrapped a scarf around a person, we were wrapping them in our love, and more importantly, the love of God. When we clothe the naked, we are giving others the c han ce to f ee l t he warm th and prot ec t ion that is God's love. Especially in this Year of Mercy, we need to remember that these Corporal Works of Mercy are solely for us to remember to share love with others.
Pope Francis has designa ted this year as the Holy Year of Mercy and to, "Be merc iful as your Father is merciful," as Jesus told his disciples in Luke 6:36. This year 2016 is an opportunity for spiritua l conversion, recognizing how much God loves and cares for us. It is a lso a time to be merciful towards ourselves, reorienting our hearts to God so tha t we can be our best se lves as we move forward in lif e. I f youhave emotional or spir itual wounds as a result of a past abortion, please consider attending our upcoming Rachel's Vineyard weekend re treat February 5-7, 2016. These retrea ts are therapy of the soul, with Christ as our loving physician. As we begin Ordinary Time in this Cycle C, we encounte r this section from the Gospel of J o h n w h e r e t h i s i s t h e f i r s t mirac le recorded . T he theme of th e manifestations of Jesus as the Son of God, the Long-Awaited Messiah, continues. Not only has the presence of Jesus been revealed to the shepherds, the Magi, to John and those at the banks of the River Jordan, but now also to his disciples and those at the wedding feast.
In the Scriptures, there is no spec ific action of Jesus that signifies the sacrament of marr iage, but his presence here at the feast at Cana, the obvious participation of Mary, Jesus and the disciples and some la te r teachings of Jesus all give us indications of the beauty and grace of the sacrament as we know it today. This season af ter Chr istmas is a wonder ful time to rediscover in the Scr iptures the presence and pow er of s a c r a m e n t s .
For us, a s it was for Jesus, Baptism is the initial and primary sacrament of discipleship an d mis s io n .
B a p t i s m i s o u r en t ra n c e i n t o a covenant relationship with God in Christ Jesus - - and our formal beginning of a faith life within a community of disciples and believers we call "church". We might not witness visible , tangible miracles of wine and wate r, but we can par ticipate in the miracle of lives given over to God in service and love and celebrated at Eucharist. We might not see or experience miracles that change our lives entirely, but we do receive grace and have a community that is there to continue with us on the journey of faith and discipleship.
Perhaps the manifestation of Jesus in our own lives is that we believe in the love and mercy of God and find within ourse lves the strength and grace to be disciples and "do whatever he asks" each day of our lives. I t is God's gift of faith tha t leads us to remember each day that God is with us, and that we are called to be the manifestation of God's love and mercy to all.
