Responsorial Psalm

Mon. The Lord comes to judge the earth. Tue. I believe that I shall see the good things

of the Lord in the land of the living. Wed. I trust in the kindness of God for ever. Thurs. The Lord has made known his salvation. Fri. With delight I rejoice in the Lord. Sat. The Lord God is my help.

In the narrative of the profession of faith at Caesarea Philippi, the principal figure is Peter rather than Jesus. The next episode in the gospel confirms this impression. Just as we were

impressed with Peter’s walk on the water, here we are equally impressed by the juxtaposition of his faith with his lack of faith. Peter has just acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah. But he sees messiahship as the glory of a royal triumph. The master however, presents himself as the suffering servant of Isaiah who will redeem his people through his passion, death, and resurrection. The disciples understand what it means to be put to death, but they do not comprehend the meaning of “raised up”. Therefore, the impulsive Peter, brought to this point by his unenlightened love, revolts against the apparent cruelty of the divine plan. Suddenly, he reverses his position. He to whom Jesus has just said: “Happy are you” after his profession of faith, is now chided sharply: “Get out of my sight, you Satan!” The “Rock” who was strong enough to have the Church built upon him, is now the obstacle, the “rock of scandal” along the Messiah’s route. Jesus had said: “It is my Father in heaven who has revealed this to you,” and now he affirms: “You are not judging by God’s standards.” “Get out of my sight” may be interpreted by each Christian as: “Go behind me to follow me. You are only a disciple and every disciple must follow the master.” The Christian can no more escape the cross of salvation than could the Christ. Truly God’s standards are not ours.

Stewardship Reflection 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time.

““What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” MATTHEW 16:26

St Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the material world.

MAINTAINING A PRAYERFUL ENVIRONMENT

The procession to and from the communion rail is a liturgical act, done slowly and reverently. Please make way for those who have already received, as they are “living tabernacles” of the Lord’s presence, to be deferred to in courtesy and faith. Also, we ask that once you have received the Eucharist, you not linger at the rail, but allow others also to approach the rail after you. Thank you.

PARISH IN YOUR WILL LEAVE A LEGACY: By remembering Our Lady of The Assumption Parish in your will, you leave a legacy in a place you love. Consider a bequest to the Parish Building Fund. May God bless you (See Pamphlet in the Vestibule).
