Our Lady of the Assumption School 2141 Walnut Avenue, Carmichael, CA 95608 (916) 489-8958 April 12, 2016 With Hands to Serve and Hearts to Love NOTE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL As we head deeper into April, there are several very important events taking place at OLA. On April 25 th , our 8 th grade students will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, and on May 1 st , our second graders will be receiving First Eucharist. Please pray for our students during this exciting time for them. Our seventh and eighth graders will be away during the week of April 18-22. The seventh grade class will be at Marin Headlands for four days and three nights, and the eighth grade class will be traveling to Williamsburg, Virginia and Washington, D.C. for six days and five nights. We are excited for them to be receiving these very special learning opportunities, and we wish them safe travels. Starting April 27 th , all of our students in grades 3 through 8 will be taking the ACT Aspire test. The ACT Aspire assessment tests our students in the subjects of reading, math, language arts, writing, and science. This is a norm referenced test, which enables us to know how our students are performing in these subject areas in relation to other students across the country who take the same assessment. Data from this summative test is collected, reviewed, and used to inform our students, teachers, and parents of student achievement and to improve instructional practices. ACT Aspire test data is put in each child’s CUM folder at school and is a part of their academic record. We will be stressing the importance of the ACT to the children, and we ask you to do the same. Please make sure your children get good sleep the night before tests and have a healthy breakfast the morning of. Please also encourage them to take the test very seriously and do the best they can. This test is not only a part of their record, but it is a good practice for the standardized testing they will do in high school, including the ACT. So, consider these tests not just a measure of their academic achievement but also a good rehearsal for important testing in the future. As Vince Lombardi once said, “Practice does not make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect.” Because our students in grades 5 through 8 will be testing in the computer lab, they will all have separate testing schedules. Please avoid scheduling appointments on the days that your child will be taking the assessment. The ACT Aspire testing schedule is as follows: Grade 3: Tuesday and Wednesday, May 10-11 Grade 4: Tuesday and Wednesday, May 10-11 Grade 5: Tuesday and Wednesday, May 17-18 Grade 6: Monday and Tuesday, May 9-10 Grade 7: Wednesday and Thursday, May 11-12 Grade 8: Wednesday and Thursday, April 27-28 God bless, Robert Love THIS WEEK AT OLA: APRIL 11 - APRIL 17 Grade 3: Please bring food for the Saint Vincent de Paul Food Locker. FUTURE EVENTS Please join us!: The annual Spring Gathering will be held on Wednesday, April 27

th. Please see the attached flyer.

Missoula Children's Theatre is returning to OLA: Two directors from MCT are scheduled to be with us from Monday, May 2, 2016, through Saturday, May 7, 2016, for auditions, workshops, and two performances of BLACKBEARD THE PIRATE, starring . . . our OLA students! What starts as a lazy day at the beach, quickly turns into a mystery and adventure when the search for Blackbeard's Treasure begins! This musical, an original musical adaptation of the classic tale, has approximately 60 roles available for students in Grades 1 through 8. This production is part of the Missoula Children's Theatre's unique international touring project. No advance preparation is necessary, and all students are encouraged to audition for parts and to volunteer for the all-important stage management responsibilities. Most students rehearse approximately 4½ hours each day, Monday through Friday, after school, but not all players will be required for the full amount of time of every rehearsal. Performances are scheduled for Saturday, May 7th, at 1:00pm and 6:30pm, in the Parish Hall. There will be many opportunities for a variety of volunteer hours.

Missoula Children's Theatre Needs Host Families: Two volunteer families are needed to provide housing for the two MCT Tour Actor/Directors. Housing must be provided for a total of six nights, Sunday to Saturday, May 1-7, 2016. Housing must be private (one person per room), clean, comfortable, and safe for each of the two Tour Actor/Directors, with access to a phone land-line or sufficient cell phone coverage. For the Tour Actor/Directors, the host families often provide wonderful memories and may launch new friendships. This is a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange and a “home away from home” experience for the team. If you would like to volunteer, or would like more information, please contact Michele Piland at 916-505-8474 or [email protected]

Congratulations to OLA’s Golf Team!: Our team played some great golf in their victory over St. John the Evangelist School. There were some impressively low scores, with Jack Deaner and Coleman Dupre finishing under par. Jack shot a 32! The girls were led by Gigi Koerwitz with a 46, recording a clutch par on the last hole. Way to go team!
