JEWELRY & METAL ARTS 1/2/3

DIGITAL DESIGN:LASER & 3D

This course is an introduction to basic centrifugal and vacuum casting techniques. Working with bronze, silver, and gold, you will develop skills in injection mold making, gating, investing, metal pouring, casting, and finishing. Ancient and modern techniques are also used to make patterns directly from wax.

CENTRIFICAL & VACUUM CASTING 1

Learn the techniques of smithing and welding: gas, arc, MIG, and TIG. Working from maquettes, you will apply these techniques to a final project, which can be one of the following: wearable form, freestanding sculpture, or a wall piece (modular or single unit).

WELDING & SMITHING

In these courses, you will create fine metal art objects and jewelry using non-ferrous and precious metals. Begin by learning the basis of fabrication and technique before moving on to more challenging projects. Take a creative and intelligent approach to innovation through an in-depth exploration of a variety of materials including plastic, wood, ceramic, stone, textiles, paint, rubber, cement, resin, and found objects.

Design and create using modern industrial techniques and adapt them for jewelry design and sculpture. In the laser-cutting course, you will learn to create vectors and use a laser cutter to cut precise, intricate designs in a variety of materials, including wood, paper, leather, some plastics, and cardboard. From there, you can enrich your curriculum with 3D modeling and printing to create unique volumetric forms.

Our program will introduce you to an array of metal design principles and techniques combined with conceptual development. Our curriculum covers sketching, design, soldering, stone-setting, welding, casting, mixed media, and digital techniques. Our comprehensive course study covers time-honored traditional techniques as well as modern, cutting-edge digital innovations.

“My teaching philosophy rests on a foundation of inspiring and motivating students to find and cultivate their unique artistic voice; first by encouraging students to nurture within themselves that almost ‘a priori’ or ‘childlike’ drive to explore and inquire of the world around them, and secondly by guiding them through a sometimes risky, bewildering landscape towards translating these experiences into an excitement, passion, and spirit of excellence for ideas, processes, and materials, both traditional and non-traditional.

Not only have I learned about many traditional jewelry techniques, but also about how to combine these techniques with new technologies such as LED lights, sensors, movements, and even 3D printing! New classes continue to be developed each semester. I have lived in San Francisco for six years and my passion for handmade jewelry is constantly increasing. Our program has the advantage of being located in the heart of a vibrant metalsmithing community with world-class museums and galleries, allowing you to gather real-world work experience from award-winning artists and designers through internships and other employment opportunities.

Real-World Partnerships

HILARY HALSTEAD CLARKThe School of Jewelry & Metal Arts is proud to partner with Hilary Halstead Clark, president of international jewelry supply wholesaler Halstead, which customers run businesses such as ecommerce stores, studio galleries, private label production for mass retail, and everything in between. Clark understands that it can be difficult for students to think beyond graduation day and scary to leave the security of the Academy’s metal studio. Our partnership allows students to tap into her expertise and receive guidance in entrepreneurship, choosing a career path, and obtaining professional grants.

“Coaching and advising new jewelers is one of my favorite things. Young artists are bubbling over with questions, ideas, and worries. The enthusiasm of newly minted makers is contagious and it never fails to reignite my love for the jewelry world.”

Clark’s passion is supporting the small jewelry business community. The Halstead Grant, provided by the Halstead family company and now in its 11th year, is a prestigious honor awarded annually to an emerging jewelry artist in the United States. The grant is a development program designed to push new jewelers to think

strategically about their business plans. The winner receives $7,500 in start-up funding along with $1,000 in jewelry supplies and media recognition in the industry. Top 10 finalists are also acknowledged with smaller cash prizes. Candidates emerge from the process with specific goals and a better understanding of what it means to run a successful independent jewelry studio. Past winners and finalists often cite the experience as a pivotal step in their entrepreneurial journeys.

EMIKO OYE San Francisco designer Emiko Oye’s creations range from bold, conceptual art statements to urban, ready-to-wear pieces. She is inspired by haute couture, art history, and LEGO. Her work has been shown in more than 80 exhibitions nationally and internationally, published in jewelry industry magazines, and is in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Craft.

Oye oversees one of Academy of Art University’s intern programs through which students get hands-on experience creating jewelry, learn about life in the industry, and connect to the craft community in the Bay Area. Recently, with the help of Academy interns, Oye created hundreds of limited-edition pins for Art Jewelry Forum, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the creation, study, and appreciation of art jewelry.

ANNA SHEFFIELDJewelry Designer

“I’m a jewelry designer and I live and work in New York. We sell in Japan, Korea, all over the world.

“My work is a little bit punk. I do a lot of things where I set the stones upside down and we’re mixing metals. It’s just a little more of an avant-garde approach.

“The Academy taught me to really pay attention to the materials I was using, to justify my intentions, to really analyze the design. Learning woodworking, metalsmithing, papermaking, moldmaking, bronze casting—learning every bit of the process—was instrumental in starting my own company. My experience was absolutely what enabled me to do what I do.”

Anna Sheffield is an American jewelry designer and entrepreneur. She designs jewelry for three of her own lines: Anna Sheffield Fine Jewelry, Bing Bang, and Bespoke. She believes jewelry is simultaneously talismanic and precious in a way that imbues objects with personal histories and makes them deeply meaningful. The most fulfilling part of her process is knowing that her creations are both dear and enduring to those who possess them, and ultimately, destined to be passed down for generations.

With over 25,000 alumni across the world, we strive to keep our artist communities engaged and supported in their professional lives.

How The Courses WorkCREATE YOUR OWN CLASS SCHEDULEWhen you take online courses at the Academy, you are free to manage your own time; there are no set class schedules that require you to be online at specific times of the day. Course content is divided evenly across 15 modules spread out during a semester. Each module’s coursework—instructional videos, audio-enhanced slideshows, digital documentation, interviews, and more—is made available at the start of each module period.

ENGAGE YOUR PEERS You may work and study independently, but that does not mean you cannot call on the support of your online classmates. Each course offers a class discussion area where students and instructors can freely exchange thoughts, post work, and provide or receive creative feedback. The discussion area’s sole purpose is to give you and your peers the opportunity to support one another’s development as artists.

To find out more, contact an admissions representative or visit www.academyart.edu/online-education.

Online Education

Our revolutionary online courses provide the same rigorous education that we offer on campus with greater flexibility. Study on your own time, at your own pace. Take full- or part-time classes. Let nothing stand in your way of pursuing your creative goals.

BONNIE PANGMFA, School of Illustration

“Academy of Art University’s Online Education provides me the privilege to receive quality education while staying with my family in Hong Kong. The program’s flexibility gives me great freedom to manage my time, work on side projects, and even come to study abroad for the summer semester! I have especially benefited from the online career talks which helped me land my current position at an animation studio.”
