TENBY SCHOOLS PENANG E- NEWSLETTER Issue #36 22 nd June 2017 Message from Campus Principal Mr. Iain Sallis Dear Parents After recent world events, particularly in London but also in Brussels, Paris, Yemen, Pakistan, Egypt and Syria, it really does go to show how international understanding and learning about cultural diversity is essential in this day and age. “A United World at Peace – Through Education” really is at the heart of what we are trying to achieve for our young people and communities we serve. In these times we need more than ever to respect, understand and learn about all cultures. Celebrate differences but also celebrate similarities. My thoughts go out to civilians and families caught up in many of the world issues and we together will ensure our students leave with a global mind set to support world peace. We are delighted to announce the staffing for 2017/18 for International schools. Heads of School will communicate details early next week. As with all schools we experience staffing changes at the end of academic years. Annual staff turnover rates in schools can vary between 5% to 25%. In many high percentage expatriate schools sometimes turnover can get as high as 40%. We are experiencing little change compared with other schools around the island. We are pleased to announce that our staff turnover rates are below 10% for International and 0% in the National schools. Board Meetings After the Principals talk on 17 th June it became clear that parents enjoyed the discussion on our 3 year development plan but also opportunities to listen to feedback results. I will be presenting to the TSPA to feedback parent survey results this week. Our group has a clear Board Constitution which states how schools should be made accountable. Each term the Principal, Heads of School and Bursar produce an accountability report to our Board members which include the CEO, Central Team Members, non-group members and two parent governors. Reports are analysed and questions are asked about improvements and developments. This report included new policies such as EAL, Trips and teaching and Learning. Model United Nations is coming We held a successful MUN practice last Saturday with students attending from POWIIS, Uplands, Straits, St Xavier’s, Distin College and a number of other schools. This prepared students for the real thing to be held on June 30 th to July 2 nd 2017. We have a total 150 delegates attending from all over Malaysia. We are the first school on the island to host such an event. The Deputy Chief Minister will be addressing the delegates for the Opening Speech on the Friday. Our students visited his office last week. Scholarships After a highly competitive scholarship process we have shortlisted 8 students to be put forward to the ILMU- Tenby Scholarship Committee for their agreement. These will be awarded to 4 students at 50% award for Year 10 and 4 students for 50% award for Year 12. Well done to all selected. Message from Campus Principal

Mr. Iain Sallis

Dear Parents After recent world events, particularly in London but also in Brussels, Paris, Yemen, Pakistan, Egypt and Syria, it really does go to show how international understanding and learning about cultural diversity is essential in this day and age. “A United World at Peace – Through Education” really is at the heart of what we are trying to achieve for our young people and communities we serve. UPSR Seminars

To prepare our students for the UPSR we have organise UPSR workshops for students in Tahun 6. These workshops were given by experienced examiners for Bahasa Malaysia, English, Science and Mathematics. The experienced teachers helped students to use correct methods of answering questions for the public exam. Each subject workshop was 4 hours in duration and held over 4 consecutive Saturdays.

The students benefitted from these workshops as they were given techniques on how to score marks, avoid pitfalls and common errors. They also learnt to use correct terms and expressions and many other important tips. It is hoped that our students will use the advice given to better prepare for the coming UPSR.

Mid-year Examination

The mid-year examinations were held from 5th to 8th June for Forms 1 to 3 and the Form 4 and 5 students sat for the examinations from 5th to 16th June.

The format and time allocation for all the subject papers are aligned to the requirements of the Ministry of Education.

Physical Education lesson

The Form 1 students had an engaging time learning how to serve the volley ball during PE class. They found that learning how to serve a volleyball is imperative to success in volleyball as the serve is the only skill where the player has control.

They learnt the underhand serve, used by beginners. Students will be learning the overhand serve after they can execute the underhand serve

Mr. Tan the PE teacher hopes that the students will be able to play a good game of volleyball, once they have learnt the right techniques. Most important of all, volleyball teaches great team work that is so vital in character-building.

Bahasa Malaysia Day

The Bahasa Malaysia Day was held on 26 May, the last day before term break

The Language day increased awareness of the importance of Bahasa Malaysia in the curriculum through a drama competition. Each form presented a play. Every student was involved – as actors, in the making of props, script writing, helping with the sound system and lighting and behind the scene work

The students were able to hone their skills and creativity to amazing levels when they presented dramatised scripts that they wrote themselves. The students adapted scenes from the movie, ‘Frozen’ and there were also original sketches that were interlaced with comedy which had the audience in stitches! In collaboration with their peers, the students proved that they can produce drama presentations that showcased their language and acting skills to entertain everyone present. The three judges certainly had a difficult time choosing the top three winners.

Many thanks to Mr. Iain Sallis, Mr. Cheah and Mdm. Thum for their support. Thanks to the Bahasa Malaysia teachers, Ms. Fareezzah and Mr. Hakimi for helping to make Bahasa Malaysia Day an educational an extremely enjoyable day!

By Marian

Dear Parents,

As we come to the end of another busy week we are focusing on our International Mindedness learning goal. Everyone at TIPS would like to wish all of our Muslim children and families ‘Salamat Hari Raya’ as they prepare to celebrate the end of the Ramadan. The school is now decorated with ketupats, which all the children have been designing over the past week. They really brighten up the school.

We will be holding an informative assembly on Thursday 22nd, which Ms Jackson will lead.

We hope everyone has a restful break over this Hari Raya holiday and look forward to seeing everyone back for the final 4 weeks of this school year.

Regards

Ms Marian

Thank you to those parents and guardians who represented at the Parent Forums last week, it was good to see you and thank you for sharing your questions and feedback. You should all have received the questions and answers on the Parent Portal.

Tenby Core Value Number 3. Lifelong Learning:

Our new year 12 and 13 students have not had much rest in between the final IGCSE or A Level exam and they are back already! Taking advantage of the rest of this term to get ahead of the game and maintaining the learning momentum here in Tenby Sixth Form.

Year 10 students have been out on Work Experience placements this week. Tenby is being represented by our fantastic students out in the world of work across Penang this week. Local businesses and companies will get to meet our students and challenge them in new environments to help encourage and develop their skills and qualities that are so important for them as they grow into young adults. We look forward to hearing about it on their return.

Tenby Core Value Number 2. International Mindedness:

The mock MUN conference took place on Saturday. Representatives from across Penang attended to debate on prisoners’ rights, corporal punishment and the death penalty. These hard-hitting topics had been researched prior to Saturday to deliver the stance that each delegate and their selected country has towards them. Well done to all students who made this happen and we are looking forward to the conference even more after this weekend! For further information take a look at the website designed entirely by our students.

Head Boy Kenji leading one of the conferences with the delegates.

Year 11 Tea Ceremony will take place at the E&O Hotel this Friday and teachers are looking forward to celebrating the end of the IGCSEs with students and parents. To ensure a prompt start at 14:00hrs please ensure you are seated at 13:45hrs.

Friday is the start of Hari Raya festivities and school is now closed Friday, as well as Monday and Tuesday. Have a fantastic weekend and enjoy your time with your families.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Wednesday 28 June.

Selamat Hari Raya!

KS3 Co-ordinator-Carolyn Reeves: Now in the last half term of this academic year and students are looking forward to moving up a year. Recently we had a transition day for students who will be joining Year 7 in September. This was a day when I was particularly proud of the twelve Year 7 students who spent the day assisting the new students and welcoming them into the Tenby Secondary School. The Key Stage 3 Marketing Team took photographs and Shaydinah Hamilton from 8S put together a fantastic video to show the students. Some of the Y9 students taking inspiration from Penang’s Street Art are currently producing some brilliant ‘Street Art’ combining images from Penang with Tenby.

KEY STAGE 4

YEAR 10 YEAR 11

The Year 10 End of Year exams are finally over and students are now embarking on their much anticipated week of Work Experience! This is going to be a fantastic week for students to experience first-hand the real life ‘world of work’, and we are very confident that students will get a lot from it. We have students in a wide variety of work placements, from lawyer’s offices to shop assistants, and we’re looking forward to hearing how they get on. Meanwhile, IGCSE exams are now over for our Year 11’s, and students who have stayed on to our Sixth Form are now attending Year 12 classes to get their first taste of Sixth Form life before resuming in August. We will be saying our final farewell to all the Year 11’s on Friday 23rd June at the E&O Hotel in Georgetown.

Sixth Form Induction Day

There was quite a ‘buzz’ with the new intake of Year 12’s and returning Year 13 students during our Induction Day. The excitement did not end there as teams worked co-operatively to make sandwiches whilst literally tied together as part of an ice-breaking activity.

Year 13 Graduation – Class of 2017

We were so proud to attend the graduation of Class of 2017. It was a wonderful setting and atmosphere and an opportunity for our amazing students, teachers and parents to reflect upon and celebrate their memories of Tenby Sixth Form. We wish our graduating Year 13’s every success in their future endeavours.
