SEPTEMBER 1ST
FIRST WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
FOR THE CARE OF CREATION
My dear Parishioners,
Despite the inconveniences of the construction work now
begun and which will be underway for several months, we
must adapt to the situation and continue to function as a par-
ish. Fortunately, we have more than adequate space in both
school and Spiritual Center to conduct our classes and meet-
ings and to hold parish events.
With the arrival of September this week, we set our sights on
another round of regular programs and several important
activities such as our participation in the Archdiocesan Pas-
toral Plan. By the end of September, Pope Francis will have
visited these shores and left his mark on Washington, D.C.,
the United Nations, in New York, and the World Meeting of
Families in Philadelphia. Though most of us will not be able
to see him personally, we do want to support him with prayer
and be nourished by his words of wisdom. I mention this
visit of the Holy Father deliberately because, while our par-
ish continues on its life’s journey, it does so as a community
of the Universal Church. We dare not forget that, whatever
we do as a Catholic community, we do as a vital member of
a vast community of the faithful. Pope Francis has been
blessed in his ability to bring people together, to help this
global community share more deeply in our common calling, and to show us by his own example how we are to reverence
one another.
Like every other Catholic community around the world, we
are caught up in the pursuit of holiness and in the unending
effort to attract others to Christ. As we strive to know, live,
and share our faith this year as one of the many evolving
parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Atlanta, we will do
well to keep our eyes on Francis and our ears tuned to his
insightful (shall I say, “inspired/”) words. At this point in
our sixty-year existence, we have no idea as to what the next
sixty will bring. But one thing we do know for sure is that
our God always surprises us as he constantly calls us to walk
in the footsteps of his Son. So, let us move ahead on our
faith journey and be prepared to be surprised by an ever-
caring, ever-loving God. Fr. Jerome, C.P.
