My dear Parishioners,

As we come to the end of the liturgical year with this Feast

of Christ the King, we will be observing one of our most

popular national holidays. Thanksgiving Day. Both celebra-

tions give us good reason to express our thanks to God. The

Feast of Christ the King serves as a powerful reminder that

our true citizenship is ultimately not of this world, but of a

realm more wonderful than anything we can possibly imag-

ine. Our national holiday serves as a reminder of our de-

pendence on God and of our need to be thankful for all the

blessings we have received from God through Jesus, his

Son, our universal King.

The Feast of Christ the King was instituted by Pope Pius XI

in 1925, a time when the spiritual disease we now refer to as

secularism had begun to manifest itself particularly in Eu-

rope. It was a time when nations began conducting their

affairs as though there were no God, when some national

leaders began to view themselves as supreme rulers, answer-

able to no one other than themselves. Ultimately, Nazism

became the epitome of this disastrous movement. Though

Pius XI died before the catastrophe of World War II, his

dream of a world turned back to its divine Savior and King

apparently annihilated, the hope he instilled in many hearts

lives on even to this day.

Despite the menacing growth of secularism and its nefarious

offspring, individualism, numerous people of faith still live

in the hope of a better world where God and his Son are

acknowledged and worshiped. Here in the United States,

Thanksgiving Day, observed by so many as a secular holi-

day, can be returned to its origins, a day set aside to

acknowledge and give thanks to God for his bountiful good-

ness to us and our nation. As families and friends gather

this coming Thursday to share food and friendship, let it be

in a spirit of that lovely hymn: “Now thank we all our God

with heart and hands and voices, Who wondrous things has

done, in whom this world rejoices. Who from our mother’s

arms has blessed us on our way with countless gifts of love.

And still is ours today.”

- Fr. Jerome, C.P.

Prayer for all Victims of

Terrorism

Loving God, Welcome into your arms the victims of violence and terrorism. Comfort their families and all who grieve for them. Help us in our fear and uncertainty, And bless us with the knowledge that we are secure in your love. Strengthen all those who work for peace, And may the peace the world cannot give reign in our hearts.
