Stewardship - Corresponsabilidad
My dear Parishioners,
As we move through this liturgical season that we call
“Ordinary Time,” I am fascinated by the way the scripture
readings for each Sunday address the pressing issues that we
as a church and as a nation are facing. This weekend we are
warned about the sins of anger and hate, vengeance and in-
justice and reminded that forgiveness and mercy are not only
the proper response but the only response that will bring
about reconciliation and healing. We hear these words from
both the Old Testament and the New, as we struggle to stand
steady amid the storms raging around us. Today’s storms are
varied: of nature, striking the east in ravaging wind and water
and the west in all-consuming fire; the COVID-19 global storm
that has now claimed 193 thousand lives in the United States;
the divisive political storm that threatens to destroy the very
fabric of our society; the 400 year old racial storm grown more
intense in our time by brutal killings of Blacks by peace officers,
as they used to be called, and, sadly, the storm within the
Christian churches, including the Catholic church, between
those who have maintained their distance from civil govern-
ment and those who have drawn dangerously close to it.
In the midst of all of this, we must constantly remind ourselves
that, as baptized members of the Body of Christ, we are com-
missioned as peacemakers for the world. Which means that,
in scriptural language, we must beg God to remove from us
our hearts of stone and replace them with hearts of flesh. A
stony hearted Christian is an anomaly. If we detect a harden-
ing of our heart, we had better hasten to the Divine Physician
in humble, ardent prayer, and plead for healing. It will be
granted because God never turns a deaf ear to one who cries
out for mercy. That prayer must be steady and persevering if
we are to fulfill our calling as reconcilers, as peacemakers. And
so, relying on God through prayer, we take up or resume the
task. And how? I believe that St. Paul VI provides the answer.
He said: “If you want peace, work for justice.” If we heed that
advice, we will sharpen our ears for the cry for justice has nev-
er been more urgent or intense than in our own time. It arises
from all quarters of our society and committed peacemakers
must hear and respond. Struggling for justice entails engage-
ment in the works of mercy for mercy is the bloom on the bush
so to speak. As we strive to carry out the spiritual and corporal
works of mercy in this stormy world, let us keep our eyes on
Christ and our hearts in his that we may never know failure.
—Fr. Jerome, C.P.

¿Cuántas veces tengo que perdonar?... ¿Siempre…?
