“An Environment Where We Can All Grow Together”

January 11, 2013

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back from Winter Break!

It is certainly nice to see all the students back from their time away from school. I hope that the holidays

were an enjoyable time for all. As a reminder during the winter months, cold and flu season is upon us.

Our staff works hard to make sure that regular hand washing is a part of our routine as well as covering

mouths when coughing and sneezing. Children with a temperature over 100 degrees are sent home and a

child is to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. Let’s work together to make Woodview a

healthy and happy place for learning in the year 2013!

The students do go out for recess during the winter months and enjoy playing in the snow. In order to

play on the playground, the children must wear all “5 points”. That means snow pants, boots, winter

coat, hat, gloves/mittens. The blacktop provides an area for students to play who are not dressed for the

snow or wet conditions. We will be outside for recess unless the wind chill is 0 degrees or below. Please

plan accordingly.

We have started up the 2nd round of testing here at Woodview. All students are taking the AimsWeb

benchmarking assessment and the NWEA MAP Reading/Math tests on the computer. We continue to

utilize all assessment data to track student learning and help us drive instruction to meet all students’

needs and abilities.

The PTO has generously used Scholastic dollars earned during book fairs to purchase four more SMART

boards for our building. Technology is an essential tool for learning. We are very lucky to have such an

involved group of parents that raise funds to improve our school. I thank you for all of your support,

whether it is purchasing books or volunteering your time. Please help me in thanking the PTO Board for

making this new technology possible.

Happy New Year from all of us here at Woodview!

Sincerely,

Cathy Santelle

NEWS FROM THE PTO

VOLUTEERS EEDED….

To help at the Market Day sale this Saturday, January 12th at Meadowview School.

Volunteers, high school age and above, are needed to help pack and distribute orders, beginning at 7:45 am, until approximately 9:30 am. A few volunteers are needed until

11:00 a.m.

Refreshments will be provided, and children are welcome, too!

By giving a little bit of time this Saturday, you are helping Woodview earn its share of D46's Market Day income this year. It's one of our most important fundraisers, and we

couldn't participate, if not for parent volunteers!

Please contact Cheryl Wilgen at 630-291-4509 or Megan Wright at 847-757-7842 for more information.

Thank you!

NEWS FROM THE PTO

*** The SMART Boards are here! ***

The Woodview PTO is proud to announce that, through the commitment and generosity of many, many Woodview parents, it is able to fund the purchase of FOUR of the remaining five SMART Boards needed to outfit all of Woodview's classrooms. Four SMART Boards were delivered to the school this week, and will soon be installed in classrooms. The PTO was able to provide this technology because the Woodview parent community continues to be supportive of its efforts, through attendance at PTO-sponsored events, participation in its fundraisers and, in the case of the SMART Boards, purchases made at the fall and spring Scholastic Book Fairs. We thank you, one and all, for being a part of the effort to get technology into the hands of our students and teachers.

We are grateful to be a part of this generous community!

Lip Sync Show & Spaghetti Dinner

The Annual Lip Sync Show & Spaghetti Dinner is scheduled for Friday, February 1! Dinner will be served beginning at 6:00 pm, and will be available the entire evening. The Lip Synch Show will begin at 6:30 pm. Dinner will be served in the gym, so you can feast on an all-you-

can-eat spaghetti dinner while rockin' out to Woodview's biggest stars!

Preorders for tickets are due January 25. Pre-ordered tickets are $5/adults, $4/kids (kids 3 and under are free). All tickets include dinner and admission to the show. Add $1.00 if

purchasing tickets at the door. An order form is included in this Woody Review.

Would you like to volunteer at the event? Would you like to donate supplies or loan cooking equipment? Help is needed with setup in the gym (beginning at 2:30pm), serving food (shifts beginning at 6:00 pm), and cleaning up at the end of the evening. Donations of

spaghetti, and loans of roasters and crock pots are needed, too. Please go to www.woodviewpto.com and click on the link provided to sign up. Thank you!

Finally, baked goods are needed for our dessert table! If you are coming to the spaghetti

dinner, please consider bringing a treat to share. Desserts can be store bought or homemade, and can be sent to school ahead of time, or brought to the event.

Thank you--it's sure to be a great night! See you there!

Mark your calendars….Exploration Day is scheduled for Friday, May 10th. It’s one of the most exciting

days of the year at Woodview School. It’s a day filled with learning, exploring, discovering, and having

fun. Students choose from more than 20 hands-on presentations and spend the day moving about the

school experiencing these interactive and interesting topics.

This day simply isn’t possible without the help of many, many volunteers. Each year, more than 100

parents, staff, and community members pitch in, offering their time and talents to make this day a huge

success. Watch for more details to follow soon.

The Exploration Day committee needs you as we begin the planning process. We are holding our first

Exploration Day Committee meeting on:

Friday, January 25th at 1:00 p.m. in the conference room at Woodview School.

Please consider joining us as we begin planning this wonderful day, and bring your ideas, as we are always

looking for new and different sessions for the students to try.

If you have questions about Exploration Day, or would like to help out, but can’t attend this meeting,

please contact:

Flu Season and School

To help keep flu outbreaks to a minimum, we are asking that all students and families follow these simple steps: 1. PLEASE keep sick children home from school until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medication, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen. (fever = 99.5 degrees or above) and their cough is gone! 2. Teach your children to COVER THEIR COUGHS and wash hands often. Hand sanitizers are also effective. 3. The CDC recommends that all school-age children receive flu vaccinations. Seasonal flu vaccines are available

now! 4. Prepare in advance. Have alternative childcare available if you cannot stay home or pick up your sick child at school. SICK students cannot remain at school! 5. PLEASE report your child’s absence to school and tell us the symptoms. (Just saying “sick” doesn’t help us track illnesses) 6. Make sure we have current phone numbers to reach you and your emergency contacts.

Clip & save Tyson Project A+ labels.

Turn in the labels to school. Your

school redeems them for cash. Each

label is worth $.26.

Here is another way to earn money for

Woodview. Simply clip the Box Tops

from your favorite General Mills

products and send them to school with

your child!

Chef Tony says, “Chilly

winter weather is here—

Market Day has some

delicious dinner options

that will warm you from the

inside!”

Did you know that Woodview

collects Campbell’s soup labels? The

labels are worth points and must have

the UPC code in order to be used. The

points can be redeemed for books, gym

equipment, and other items for our

school. Each teacher has a box in the

classroom to collect labels and box tops!

This Saturday, January 12, is Woodview's turn to provide the manpower for Market Day pickup, at Meadowview School. The Market Day Committee is seeking 15 volunteers, high school age and above, to help unload trucks, sort boxes, and fill orders from 7:45 to 9:30 am. A few volunteers are needed until 11:00 am. A breakfast of doughnuts, bagels, etc., will be provided. Feel free to bring your school aged kids to help! To volunteer, please contact Megan Wright at [email protected] or Cheryl Wilgen at [email protected]. Thanks in advance for helping us to earn our school's portion of the Market Day profits!
