Dear Woodview Parents and Guardians,
Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for next week, October 1st through October 4th. Dismissal on Thursday is at 11:00. There will be no school on Friday, October 4th.
The Parent Information Exchange sheet you completed will be an important part of the goal setting discussion. We thank you for sharing that valuable information. The purpose of this first conference is to establish attainable goals for your child’s learning. Here are a few suggestions to help you make the most of the time you spend with your child’s teacher.
Plan ahead: Jot down any questions you would like to ask before coming to the conference. You are always welcome to e-mail questions as they come up, but this will help you to use the time efficiently.
Arrive on time or early: If the teacher is working with another family, please knock on the door at your scheduled time. This will help all of us stay on schedule.
Be a partner: You play such an important role in your child’s education. When you work with the teacher to support their goals, it can only lead to success. Ask what you can specifically do at home.
Share with your child: Let them know what was discussed. Celebrate their successes. Tell them what you are proud of. Also, tell them what they can work on.
We are happy to have the Scholastic Book Fair going on during conferences. The book fair is a great way to support our school because proceeds are returned to us. It is also the best way to add books to your library at home.
If you have not signed up for a conference or you need to change your time, please call the Woodview office at 223-3668. We look forward to seeing you conference week.

The Harvest Moon Festival Planning Committee Invites You…
The Harvest Moon Festival will be here before we know it!
Scheduled for Friday, October 26, the event includes a dance party in the gym, a not-too-scary "Fun
House," plus crafts, games, a cake walk, and more!
We need many hands and many ideas to make this fun fall event a success!

A great big “THANK YOU” goes out to the 20+ Woodview parents who came to our first PTO meeting of the
school year. It was great to see so many new parents join us and participate in the discussion and planning for our
upcoming events.
We are looking forward to a packed house for our next meeting on:

We are beginning our 1st
collection contest for the school year.
Here’s how it works: Clip the Box Tops from hundreds of participating products and
send them to school with your child in a sandwich bag to his/her homeroom teacher. The
homeroom that collects the most Box Tops by October 15th
will win a prize for each child
in that classroom! Plus, the winning class gets to display a “Box Tops Contest Winner”
trophy until the next contest. Fun!
Each clipped Box Tops is worth 10¢ when our school redeems them from Box Tops for
Education.
The PTO will use the money towards a variety of needs for the school such as field trips,
special programs, school equipment, etc. You can also shop at your favorite online stores

P.E. UPDATE
Third and fourth graders have started their soccer unit. They had two weeks of learning how to play and the
different skills it takes to play soccer. This week all of the students will be in a soccer tournament within their
classes. The kids are all doing great and we love to see the improvement. When our soccer unit is over, we will be
having a week of fitness. We will be doing a fitness week after each unit.
First and second graders are learning some soccer skills as well, and will be learning the correct ways to skip, hop
and gallop over the next few weeks. They will all be introduced to the climbing wall and the Wii over the next
couple of weeks.
Our kindergartners are doing a great job and we are very happy to have them in our school. They are learning some
of our basic games and have been working on catching and throwing for the past two weeks. They all have been
improving and will soon be working on kicking.
Parents, when we do our fitness days, PLEASE feel free to contact me if you would like to come in and help out.

Hello Woodview families!
We are moving and grooving in music class!
Full Day Kindergarten is learning rhythm through experience.
We are playing rhythmic games, dancing, and playing instruments while students are asked to “keep the beat.” Towards
the end of the unit, students are expected to keep a steady beat on their own while listening to music, and perform
simple rhythms on the drums.
First grade is speaking in rhythms, and performing rhythms on hand drums using a call and response. Towards the end
of the unit, students are expected to start reading simple rhythms on their own.
Second Grade is reviewing how to read rhythms using Ta and TiTi. They are even asked to compose (write) their own
rhythms for other students to play in class. Towards the end of the unit, students are expected to start reading rhythms
and rests on their own.
Third grade is starting to count rhythms using numbers instead of Ta and TiTi. The number system is what they will
use for the rest of their musical career! Towards the end of the unit, students are expected to read and analyze rhythms
on their own.
Fourth Grade is counting, reading, and playing rhythms on their own.
Towards the end of the unit, students are expected to write their own rhythms for other students to play that include:
rests, 16th notes, syncopation, and a time signature.
3rd and 4th Grade Families: A letter will be going home with your child soon about purchasing a recorder for music
class. If your child already has a recorder, please have them bring it to music class to show me. If you need to order a
recorder, please fill out the form that will be coming home with your student. I would like to have all orders turned in
before conferences. Thank you!

ART NEWS
I am always looking for more parent volunteers to help out in the art room at various times throughout the
year. If you are interested in helping please contact me at [email protected].
There are different supplies that the art room is always looking for: Baby wipes, pencils, glitter, fun erasers for
prizes, masking tape, large zip lock bags, washable markers.
Kindergarten
The students will learn about the habitat a fish lives in, as well as the parts of a fish. From this knowledge,
they will have to create a fish in its habitat.
To make their fish, the students will paint their hand, and transfer their handprint to paper, know as
printmaking. Then the students will transform their handprint into a fish. To create the sea, the students will learn
how to use watercolor paints and different techniques to create an ocean.
First Grade
The students will be looking at different cityscapes and learning about geometric shapes that they see. They
will be drawing their own city, making sure to draw each one different. The students will then outline their city-
scape on a piece of foam board. They will then be introduced to the printmaking process. They will learn the vo-
cabulary words: foam board, ink, and brayer.
After they make a print of their city, the students will make a reflection (symmetry), so the city appears to be
by the water. The students will also learn about different watercolor painting techniques.
Second Grade
The students will be traveling in art to Asia to learn about the country of India. They will learn a little about
the culture. Then they will learn about a specific tree that grows in India called a banyan tree. The students will
look at pictures of banyans trees to get an idea of how to draw their own banyan tree. They will learn about the art
term of silhouette and apply it to their banyan tree.
The art media the students will work with are oil pastels. They will have to find similar colors to blend together to
fill in the composition. The students will also learn how to create a sunset with the oil pastels.
Third Grade
The students will be learning about the life of the artist named Georgia O’Keeffe. Georgia O’Keeffe liked to
paint flowers at a large scale and close up. The students will use their imagination in creating their own flower and
learn about cropping their picture.
Also, the students will learn about the analogous colors, which are colors adjacent to each other on the color
wheel. They will have to use analogous colors when they paint their flowers.
Fourth Grade
The students are going to be learning about the artist, Keith Haring. Keith Haring liked to draw cartoon fig-
ure drawings that showed movement and action. There will be student volunteers to come and pose in an athletic
stance for the other students to draw them. Then the students will outline their cartoon figures with different
colored lines. These lines will make the picture appear like the cartoon figures are moving just like Keith Haring’s
artwork.

school. Each teacher has a box in the
classroom to collect labels and box tops!
