It is certainly nice to see all the students back. I hope that the holidays were an enjoyable time for all. We are excited to begin 2012. The winter months are cold and flu season. Our staff works hard to make sure that regular hand washing is a part of the day as well as covering mouths when coughing and sneezing. Children with a temperature over 99.5 degrees are sent home. A child is to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. If vomiting occurs, students can’t return for 24 hours. Let’s work together to make Woodview a healthy and happy place for learning. We have started our Winter NWEA MAP testing. Students take the NWEA MAP Reading/Math tests on the computer and results will be shared during February conferences. All students also take the AimsWeb benchmarking assessment. We continue to utilize all of our assessment data to track student learning and help us drive instruction. Finally, with the new year upon us, it is a great time to sit down with your child(ren) and come up with some “New Year Resolutions”. As a family, talk about new strategies and ideas to help your child succeed in school. Whether it be committing to a set time everyday after school, or spending more time reading together. Many things can be done at home to support learning. Please remember the resources we have on our website can be a fun way to practice skills. Conference week is February 13 th through 16 th . SMILE! The Smile Mobile Dentists are coming to Woodview on Friday, January 27th! They provide dental services to those families who need financial assistance (no insurance), and they offer subsidized fees for those who wish to pay for a check-up. The dentist is state licensed and will conduct a complete dental exam. If you wish for your child to have a dental exam on January 27th, please fill out and return the form that was sent home last week. If you need a form, let your child’s teacher know, or call Mrs. Issacs, the nurse, at 847-543-5901 to have another one sent home.

It’s time to order the Woodview School Yearbook!

Your student only gets to experience their school year once, so don’t let this chance to order a yearbook pass you by. Please use the link below to order online, or send a check payable to

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

To help at the next Market Day sale

Saturday, January 21st.

Market Day is a fundraiser that we share with the other District 46 elementary schools. Each

elementary school takes a turn supplying volunteers to help unload the delivery truck and organize the orders for pick up. The profits from each monthly sale are split between the five

elementary schools. Woodview's turn to volunteer is Saturday, January 21st.

This is the second and last sale that Woodview will host this school year. Fifteen adult

volunteers are needed to help unload the truck, sort orders and retrieve orders. Volunteers are needed at Meadowview school from 7:45 am to 9:30 am. Please

consider helping even if you need to arrive late or leave early. Spouses are welcome, and school-aged children can help too! Donuts, bagels, coffee and juice will be provided.

Please email Stephanie Weatherly at [email protected] if you can help with this

important PTO fundraiser. Thank you!

Mark your calendars….Exploration Day is scheduled for Friday, May 18th. It’s one of the most exciting

days of the year at Woodview School. It’s a day filled with learning, exploring, discovering, and having

fun. Students choose from more than 20 hands-on presentations and spend the day moving about the

school experiencing these interactive and interesting topics.

This day simply isn’t possible without the help of many, many volunteers. Each year, more than 100

parents, staff, and community members pitch in, offering their time and talents to make this day a huge

success. Watch for more details to follow soon.

The Exploration Day committee needs you as we begin the planning process. We are holding our first

Exploration Day Committee meeting on:

Friday, January 20 at 1:00 p.m. in the conference room at Woodview School.

Please consider joining us as we begin planning this wonderful day, and bring your ideas, as we are always

looking for new and different sessions for the students to try.

If you have questions about Exploration Day, or would like to help out, but can’t attend this meeting,

STAY HEALTHY THIS FLU SEASON TIPS FROM THE D46 HEALTH COORDINATORS

To help keep illnesses and flu to a minimum, we are asking that all students and families follow these simple steps: 1. PLEASE keep sick children home from school until they are fever free for 24 hours without

medication, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin). A fever is considered above 99.5 degrees, and their cough should be gone!

2. Teach your children to COVER THEIR COUGHS and wash hands often. Hand sanitizers are

also effective. 3. The CDC recommends that ALL school-age children receive flu vaccinations. Seasonal flu

vaccines are available now. 4. Prepare in advance. Have alternative childcare providers available if you cannot stay home or

pick up your sick child at school. Sick students cannot remain at school! 5. PLEASE report your child’s absence to school and tell us if you suspect flu. (Just saying “sick”

doesn’t help us track illness trends in classrooms.) 6. Make sure we have current phone numbers to reach you and your emergency contacts.

Helping Children Develop Friendships

Parents and professionals often struggle with helping children learn to be good friends or to understand the complexities of social interactions. Below are a number of strategies that can help children develop friendships.

2. Leverage the Childs Interests: If the goal of enrolling a child in a program is to provide opportunities for making friends, look for activities the child enjoys. Some children like the arts while others enjoy sports. If a child is particularly shy, look for activities that initially have less direct contact. Tumbling and swimming are examples of individual sports while soccer and basketball involve more contact with peers. If children start in activities they enjoy, they are more likely to join other programs.

3. Role Play Difficult Skills: Practicing social skills is a way to work on specific aspects of social interactions. For example, if you notice your child stands too close to peers or repeatedly asks the same questions, help them learn about personal space or conversational skills through role play. By practicing these skills in the home, children can learn to improve their social skills and apply them outside the home.

4. Provide Examples: While reading books or watching television, explain social situations to children. Point out how helping others, using kind words, and listening when friends talk are ways to be a good friend. When characters are being hurtful or invading someone’s personal space, point these actions out and ask the child what the character could do differently to be a better friend.

5. Model Being Good to Others: Part of being well liked and being a good friend is being kind. Demonstrate kindness by saying nice things about and to others whether they are the grocery store employee or your neighbor. Point out when a co-worker does something thoughtful and how this makes you feel about them. If your child is sympathetic or says something complimentary, tell them their actions made you happy.

6. Do Not Force Friendships: Just like adults, children get along better with some peers than others. Teaching children to be kind and to include everyone in activities is important, but they do not have to be best friends with everyone.

1. Get Involved: Participate in community sports teams, art programs, and special events. These are wonderful opportunities for children to engage in structured activities with peers. For children with special needs, communities increasingly are offering camps and activities geared towards their specific needs. Ask professionals and support groups for information on these programs or check your community newspapers, centers, and websites. Another great activity, for children who benefit from very direct instruction, is social skills groups. These groups, which are offered in many communities, are a great way for children to develop their social skills in a fun yet structured environment.
