Made in Port Talbot: Tata teams up with JCB to develop the tractor of tomorrow Tata Steel has teamed up with JCB Landpower to create a next generation hi-tech tractor using steel from the firm’s plant at Port Talbot and galvanised at Llanwern. The tractor has been developed through a three-way partnership involving Tata Steel, JCB Landpower, and GKN - the current manufacturer of the Fastrac 4000 tractor chassis – which was formed to develop the optimally-designed vehicle. The Fastrac features an increase in the existing load-carrying capacity, combined with a reduced turning circle and a complete redesign of the existing chassis structure. Tata engineers have been able to reduce the weight of the machines to make them leaner on fuel consumption, able to handle bigger loads and safer than previous models while retaining their strength. Phil Clements, Head of Lifting & Excavating at Tata Steel said: “Optimising product design from the outset is fundamental to achieving the best result, and this is why we work in partnership with our customers through our early vendor involvement programme. This is the first time we have worked with JCB Landpower and GKN Structures in this way, and we hope this successful outcome paves the way for many more collaborations.” www.abayoflife.com/en/news/made-in-port-talbot-tata-teams-up-with-jcb-to-develop-the-tractor-of-tomorrow

Funding boost brings Welsh-developed hi-tech diabetes aid a step closer to reality Research at Swansea University to develop a hi-tech diabetes aid, which could save patients’ lives by sending an SMS alert to emergency personnel if they suffer a hypoglycaemia attack, has received a further funding boost of more than £114,600 from the Welsh Government, through its EU funded Academic Expertise for Business (A4B) programme. The work led by Dr Vincent Teng, a nanoelectronics expert from the University’s College of Engineering, began in autumn 2011, and has already made significant progress towards a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device and this further funding will enable Dr Teng work to continue on a second project until the end of 2014, bringing the device closer to reality through the development of a preclinical trial prototype device. The monitoring system being developed will also have the capability to be adapted for other chronic conditions, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer and asthma. Economy Minister Edwina Hart said: “The A4B programme is designed to harness the knowledge, expertise and facilities that exist within our academic institutions, help stimulate business ideas and launch new products and processes for the economic benefit for Wales. Swansea to stage its own half marathon this summer Local runners David Martin-Jewell and Nick Francis, who have both recently conquered full 26.2 mile marathons in Paris and Barcelona, are behind a project which will see Swansea launching its own half marathon. Rhossili Bay named one of the world's top beaches again - and the best in the UK The three mile stretch of beach at the tip of the Gower peninsula has beaten beaches in Spain, Greece, Italy and Turkey to be named third best beach in Europe for the second year in a row, in the Travellers’ Choice Beaches awards. Rhossili also keeps its title as the UK’s number one. The large expanse of white sand and towering cliffs make the area popular with surfers, paragliders and ramblers. To have a Welsh beach named among not only the best in Europe, but the best in the world, just goes to show how lucky we are in the UK to have such stunning scenery right on our doorstep.” www.abayoflife.com/en/news/rhossili-bay-named-one-of-the-worlds-top-beaches-again-and-the-best-in-the-uk

Thrill for Swansea firm as mussels head to Harrods Mussels grown in Swansea’s Queen’s Dock were on show in Harrods last month as part of a wider St David’s Day promotion of Welsh produce. Sales director, Dave Hancocks, said that Harrods was keen to try out mussels which had not been dredged but grown in sustainable fashion and in clean water. The mussel larvae attach themselves to ropes and develop into seed mussel. This mussel seed is later removed and reattached to different ropes where the shellfish are left to grow until ready for harvesting. Mr Hancocks said Welsh Government and European fisheries grants had enabled the company to seek expert marketing advice, which in turn had opened the door to the Brompton Road store. Speaking of the announcement, Mr Hancocks said: "It is fantastic news. For us it is one shop at a time - this time we just happened to cross a corner shop in Knightsbridge!" www.abayoflife.com/en/news/thrill-for-swansea-firm-as-mussels-head-to-harrods

Singleton Park's Swiss Cottage expected to be complete by the end of May Work to reinstate Singleton Park’s Swiss Cottage is expected to be complete by the end of May. Windows, doors and stairs have now been replaced on a like-for-like basis and work has started on putting a new roof in place. Work on its reinstatement started in late 2013 once Swansea Council was given the green light by Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service. Approval was needed for the types of materials to be used during the reinstatement works because of the cottage’s listed building status. Councillor Rob Stewart, cabinet member for finance and resources, said: “It’s a much-loved local landmark that’s been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people over the years. Weather depending, we hope the work will be finished by the time the peak summer tourist season arrives.” www.abayoflife.com/en/news/singleton-parks-swiss-cottage-expected-to-be-complete-by-the-end-of-may

Restored historic building at Margam Park now open to public Work to refresh a historic building is bearing fruit for Margam Park as the grade II listed Citrus House and adjoining Propagation House are now officially open to the public following a £900,000 boost. The architectural and historical significance of the Citrus House has been preserved for the enjoyment of park visitors thanks to funding from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government through the Rural Development Plan for Wales. Featuring a new citrus collection, the Citrus House will also be used as a facility for family events, community functions and an educational resource for schools and groups. Garden volunteers from Margam Park’s new volunteer scheme will work alongside Neath Port Talbot council staff to ensure the citrus collection is maintained to high standards. Council leader Ali Thomas said: “The generous funding from the Rural Development Plan has ensured that Margam Country Park’s historical attractions remain at the core to providing exceptional educational and leisure experiences for all those who visit the park.” www.abayoflife.com/en/news/restored-historic-building-at-margam-park-now-open-to-public

'Muddy marvellous' as extreme race set to make a splash Fitness fanatics, adrenaline junkies and those who just want a challenge will be given the chance to test their limits at Wales’s first extreme mud race in Carmarthen this summer. Back 2 the Trenches brings together both natural and man-made obstacles in runs ranging from 5k to 18k, and the first event of its kind in Wales will be held at Cothi Bridge in Carmarthen on Sunday, May 8. Obstacles include running up hills covered in mud, crawling through muddy water on your hands and knees while keeping your head below barbed wire, climbing over rope nets and tyres and much more. Neil Goode, one of the event organisers, said Carmarthen was chosen as the location for Wales’ first Back 2 the Trenches event because of its terrain: “We wanted to tie it in with our themes of the First World War. It is called The Western Front because the Welsh Guards were formed in 1915.” Mr Goode said they would like to make the event a regular thing in Wales. www.abayoflife.com/en/news/muddy-marvellous-as-extreme-race-set-to-make-a-splash
